View Full Version : LGC Needs More Diversity

G105
11-04-2007, 08:53 PM
Was noticing that very few individuals seem to post here and they are all repeat players. I did a little bit of research (using LGC info) and from what I can tell, this board is dominated by about a dozen people. Here are some stats, as of about 5 pm today.

There are 1227 total registered users, of which 807 have ever posted a message. There have been 225,339 total posts. Of these, only 16 posters (1.3% of registered users) account for over 50% of all posts and 44 posters (3.6%) account for 75% of all posts. And many of them haven't been around in a long while. So it seems that this board consists of about a dozen people talking to each other with very little input from anyone else. Not much diversity. In fact, the reverse; it's almost incestuous.

The number of posts are by the following:

RIO 5142 2%
tommy 5184 2%
SoCalcaniac 5203 2%
Stormbringer 5286 2%
StormShaman 5296 2%
Canesluver 5415 2%
batesb13fan 5873 3%
Jeff O Rocks 6099 3%
Shell 6720 3%
Guyute 8886 4%
puck_it 10038 4%
SouthernHockeyChick 13680 6%
nccanes 13738 6%

This board needs to widen its base.

As an admin of the site, let me say thanks. Especially for your contribution to 0.095% of the board.

I and the rest of the regulars will be sure not to post at your behest.

Those are also the ones that have been here since the beginning...

Beyond that, what do you suggest we do? No one is holding a gun to anyone's head and telling them NOT to post.

I encourage anyone and everyone that's a Canes fan to register and post. Post a lot!

So, the people who were here talking during the lean years when the team stunk and no one wanted to talk about them have the most posts. Seems about right.

I kind of like things the way they are. We've made a nice community.

Maybe LGC should buy some ad-time during the games, start a "get-out-the-post" program to get people to join.

But really, if you have something to say then post. Some people don't, and others would rather look, that's ok and just seems a part of how the interweb works.

if my post count could be transferred from CH.COM and all it's variations then we could really add to the diversity meter. I have Old and Polish very well covered!! LOL

As someone who also came over from CH.com during the "play" times, I admit, it was a bit weird at first. I posted for awhile then disappeared (okay, I think I said something that upset someone back in the day :D, got my feelings hurt and stopped posting on message boards altogether).

Moving to Florida, this was the one place that made me feel like home and I kinda "rejoined."

Still, I don't post on every subject and in case you didn't notice there are ALOT of subjects.

When I want to contribute, I post and when I don't, I don't. Yes, a lot of people on this board know each other and have that ability to "feed" off of other posts. Big deal! Makes it fun to read whether you post something or not:lol:

Now, I've upped my post count a bit more. Okay? :smoke:

I consider myself to be an LGC regular and have been here since the beginning and yet I'm nowhere near the numbers you posted. Some people just post more than others ;). I know I consider this board my hockey home. Also during various LGC server moves post counts have moved all over the place. I know I lost a few hundred in one of the moves but since I really don't care about post counts I didn't say anything.

I'm here for the hockey conversation, not for counting posts. :D

I'd love for my post count to be lower, but I had a really boring job for a few years.

It's funny to look at that top list, because a couple of them don't even post at all (or much anymore) - which just shows you that the list means nothing. Jeff O Rocks hasn't posted in a few years right? tommy's been busy since he went to college a couple of years ago.

Seems like we've got more people participating in discussion today than at any time in the past (regardless of the post count that goes back to 2002 for pete's sake), so I say we're moving in the right direction.

With any board that's been around this long, it can appear clique-ish. It's not the people that are here, it's just human nature and message board reality. I think LGC and its mods have done a good job trying to keep that in check if people feel a little put-off by their reception. It's never meant that way, so it's always good to point it out if that happens.

edit: Yeah, I looked it up, Jeff O Rocks hasn't posted since March of 2004, almost 4 years ago. It might help to know that during the lean years, there were also a number of OT threads that kept us occupied, similar to the Toast started about the Song Titles. That tends to boost the post count.

I lurk a LOT more than I post - usually because I don't have anything new to add to the discussion, not because I feel threatened or anything. But I have occasionally noticed a cold reaction to some posters, and it's always for the same reason - the poster is overly negative or critical of the team or the board. I think that's fair because, while we aren't looking to have sunshine blown up our collective @$$es, we all love this team (and this board) and no one wants to hear the worst all the time.

I probably log on to LGC a dozen times a day and read the boards, but I don't feel like I usually have anything to add. I just like to lurk, infact in the lurking world I consider myself a regular on here. I even bought a LGC t-shirt because this is my favorite board. If something is on my mind most of the time someone has already posted it and I don't think it is necessary to repeat.

I don't really mind that a handful of people post on here because if you have ever checked out ch.com you can see that the boards are full of gibberish by people posting just for the sake of posting. I like the fact that if I read the threads on here they are for the most part worth reading and don't have topics like "What is your players favorite color?"

There seems to be a lot of people like me... holding about a 1-3posts/week pace, and posting very rarely.

"Post count" isn't a good metric for diversity, imho, because my count is low and I'd say I'm an "active" participant.

caniac97
11-05-2007, 10:03 AM
My thought has always been, it is not the number of your post but the quality of the content you provide. If you post count is high but all you post is "Chad Rocks" a few hundred times a week then are you really contributing anything!! I myself like the post that make you think from a different perspective regardless of the individuals post count!

Quality not Quantity!

I guess since I've been called out as "one of a dozen people who dominate this board"
I'll just say this:

I talk a heck of alot; it's my natural state- and as most who know me here can attest, I have an opinion on pretty much anything related to hockey, not just the Hurricanes.
This is a great group of people, and to me it seems like we have more than the 'stats' will suggest that post regularly like LTD and Vandy and others so I'm not about to say this is some little club.

People who have registered and don't post, should. I don't know how you get people to get out the post, I personally would find it difficult not to chime in on any subject, but then again, that goes back to my chatty personality that borders on overly opinionated.

Chad does rock, and I hope Eric Staal will be ok.

Maybe the "Chad Rocks" posts are a little like the "useless presents" (marshmallow shooter, anyone? :)) on Christmas morning, but isn't Christmas more fun WITH them? Especially listening to games on NHL radio on the computer, I post them (my way of cheering), and it makes ME happy :D ... guess I'm just one of those *annoying Caniacs* with *excessive* reactions! :) Anyway, I've learned a ton from this Board, and I appreciate all the *oldies* on here, though I don't have much to contribute, being a relative newbie to the game.

Isn't that Mona?

Most of the huge post counts come from the leaner years. I started posting here when I was in pharmacy school and I had a LOT of procrastination time and a need for something to keep me sane. When did I hit 12,000? 2 years ago? Does this place still have a stat that breaks down the highest posters for the week? I'd bet that's pretty different from the list above, though many of us up there are still pretty active. I don't post half as much as I used to.

Plus, Guyute or Caniac gave me about 4000 extra when we moved just to screw with me.:lol:

I don't think anyone is talking about people here doing that. I'm sure when you do that it's in context of his game performance. It's not like you woke up this morning and posted a "CHAD RAWKSSS!!!!!111" thread just because you felt like it. ;)

My sis, chc, has been a member for a few years, and I would read the post on occasion just for her mentioning something. I joined about a month ago and since then I post a comment/reply when I feel I have something to add to the topic.

I am very new to message boards. In fact this is my first that I joined. I am slowly learning new things about the board and the people here. I live out of state, and the small town I'm in does not have anything to say about hockey but about once a week. So I come here to read up on the Canes and then to also read about other teams. Since I am fairly new to the hockey world I enjoy the links and articles posted by others, since I wouldn't know where to go to get the info.

Needless to say, that since I have joined I have learned a lot more about hockey and enjoy learning more from others that I feel I have a common connection with. Granted there are many places I could go to get the same info, but here it feels like everyone is an extended family to everyone else here. I prefer this type of atmosphere over any other.

Hopefully after I have been a member for a few years my name will pop up on the list, but until then I thank everyone for welcoming this "newbie" and not excluding me like I hear other boards do. I don't feel as if this is "cliquish" board, but I do notice those that know each other outside of the computer world. Eventually as I travel to NC, I hope to also be one that knows a few of you outside of my computer.

My post count is still extremely low, but I chime in on threads that I have an opinion about.

I've been a member of LGC for two, maybe three years now, and it's on my favorites bar. Second only to the Canes Page itself (which I never actually visit... hmmm).

When I have something to chime in on, I do. When someone talks about that idiot caller named Will that called into the Aftermath, I make sure to call them dumb or something. :P

I think there are more than a dozen people that post regularly... there's just a ton of lurkers. Every message board has 'em.

I personally don't like when other NHL team cultures try to come here and diversify us. In other words, the Buffalo fan genocide is fine by me on this board. so if we aren't diverse, we at least are promoting the caniac race as the elite race. Do I sound like someone?

Add me to the pacific islander, filipino, 30-40, father, separated season ticket holder Philadelphia eagles New orleans saints fan for gay rights diversity demographic.

Here is my two cents on this issue, along with my personal story. I joined the website back in 2003. I was post happy for a while. As life would have it, I went though a hellish time where hockey took a major backseat in my life. I took a major leave of absence from the site. I came back sometime in 2005. And here I am today.I think another posting issue for a lot of us is this: a lot of us are outsiders when it comes to 'local' issues. Granted I have been in the Raleigh area more times in the past 6 months then I have ever been, but I still don't post a lot about 'local' issues. Natually the out of state Cane fans are going to have a lot less. It's not a bad or good thing, just an observation. I personally have felt a part of the 'family' since day 1. I hope everyone else has as well.

I just took 50 off your count. ;)

That could be dangerous. What if we have somebody under 50 who does nothing as well? The 2 nothings would cancel out and we'd have something and we can't have that.

I would have many more posts as well but I learned the hard way that I tend to ruffle some feathers with shall we say some rather forceful and at times unpopular opinions. (I also shy away from proper punctuation) I have made a conscious decision to temper what I might want to say and think who if anyone I am gonna peeve off if I make said comment. By the time I have decided whether to make said comment I usually have forgotten it since I am now at the age where the short term memory really blows. Plus I certainly would not want to be beaten about the head with a lemen zested grouper either.

The cool thing is that I took a year, possibly more, off from the board here and I still know most everyone. Way. Cool. A clique-ish board is a good board IMO.

Amber's invasion was a year ago?????? Whoa, time flies when you're a lame loser who hasn't been into hockey until this year again.

I have to admit sitting in 123 and seeing Amber and J down near the glass in E Snooterville vs. the Penguins and her holding up that sign with Orpik and others with the red circle and slash can STILL make me chuckle!

LOL - I found it in the Pens game thread. Credit to AP for taking the photo!

Hmmmm, looks like a pretty diversified response...

Boards are for the people that want to post there. So, guess what--those who come more often, have more time, opinions and interests will have more posts.

I posted here way back, then didn't post for about two or three years, and I guess all old posts got deleted. My login and profile was still here, so I came back.

I LIKE HOCKEY. I LIKE THE CANES. My circle of friends/co workers do not do hockey, or care about hockey, so I come here (and elsewhere) to get HOCKEY. But since I live in Greensboro and work most nights until 7, I don't get to many games. I also don't go to many of the other forum rooms except the Hurricanes main discussion page. So I don't get post padding, and I haven't met anyone personally to join in with those who know each other. But I like to read and follow along anyway.

So what I meant was, what a dumb thread topic...

...oh, and yes, aubergine sounds so much more sophisticated, epicurean, and posh than eggplant.

No matter where you are, what you do, or how old you are, there are cliques all around. It's just a matter of whether want to fit in or move on (and by fit in I'm not talking complete and total conformity). There are strong opinions on this board. If you don't like it, move on and find another board.

Every board you go to (hockey or not) will have a similar group of strong minded people who don't mind sharing their opinions. If you're too much of a wuss to voice your opinions and thoughts, maybe interweb forums are not for you.

I'm a loud mouthed extrovert and always have been. I'm not scared to say what I think, and know when I need to put on my flame resistant suit. :)

I keep coming for StormShaman's cat picture speak, fun hockey talk with folks who know about hockey, Kaberle loving twins, and the occasionally acerbic Puck_It (that's not a dig Puck_It...I enjoy watching you throw down). These things make me happy. I may not post a ton, but I do enjoy reading.

I have been here since the latest incarnation of this board, and come and go, read a lot, and post sometimes. yeah, it goes against all the love for the classic Bond movies but Pierce was born to be James Bond IMHO. I think he was just british enough and had the right look to be James Bond. Maybe it's because my first Bond movie was Goldeneye.

This was always one of my favorite threads, I am loving a reason to resurrect it.

Posting for posterity just in case it gets deleted (sometimes ch.com deletes threads or posts that reference other boards).

Obviously this is the official canes message board, and i am sure the best source of info. However, I remember there being other canes boards as well...does anyone know of any good ones? Thanks!

Biggest problem with this board is that about 5-6 people make about 80% of the posts. Mostly a small group of friends chatting with each other.

Well.....Hmmmm....I don't know about you all but I can't stomach looking at threads over there for more than 5 minutes. Between the stoopid questions and comments I get a headache just browsing. And from what I have seen the posts over there are comprised of a very small group of people as well and anyone else who does post usually ends up getting thrown all over the place for upsetting the experts.

I love this board and I am not even in that group of 5-6 friends! Thanks for the laugh LTD. I for one am thankful for this non-nhl board.
