SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes Executive Vice President and General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have signed free agent defenseman Nikos Tselios to a multi-year deal. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 24-year-old Tselios, who was originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round (22nd overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, recorded 4-10-14 and 77 penalty minutes (PIM) in 74 games in the American Hockey League split between Lowell and Springfield. He has played in two games in his NHL career, both in the 2001-02 season with Carolina.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound blueliner played in 70 games with Lowell in 2001-02 and recorded 3-16-19 and 64 PIM. In the two seasons prior, Tselios played with Cincinnati of the IHL in 1999-00 and 2000-01.
Tselios, a native of Oak Park, Illinois, spent his junior career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He played two seasons with the Belleville Bulls and two seasons with the Plymouth Whalers. Tselios was named to the OHL's All-Rookie team in 1997. His best offensive season came in 1998-99 with the Bulls when he recorded 21-39-60 and 60 PIM in 60 games.
Nikos is the cousin of Detroit Red Wings all-star defenseman Chris Chelios.
