View Full Version : Canes Most Underrated Player-Cory Stillman

From the same Yahoo writer who wondered why we exist.

Carolina Hurricanes: Cory Stillman – Peterborough, Ont. native never seems to get recognized for his offensive abilities, but he's quietly managed to score 20 goals seven times and had 552 career points in his first 771 games. Chosen sixth overall by Calgary in 1992, the center played for the Flames and St. Louis before book-ending the 2005 lockout with Stanley Cup wins in consecutive seasons with Tampa Bay in 2004 and Carolina in 2006.

I happen to agree with him (as opposed to the email I sent after his last article). I'm a relative newbie around here, so someone is going to have to fill me in on the whole "Cory Stillman doesn't do anything" joke.

Let me! Let me!

About 2 years ago-- I think it was Puck_It -- after a brief period where Stillman hadn't gotten any points, said something like, "Why did we get Stillman? He never does anything!" And then, of course, Stillman just quietly started racking up the points. So, we just wanted to keep reminding Puck_It that whenever Stillman "does nothing" we're winning!

Back during Cory's first season here, there were comments from people (and honestly I can't remember if it was overheard at games or showed up on message boards) that would say "Stillman doesn't DO anything". I guess it goes towards his "under the radar" production that this article is even getting at. Or perhaps because of his underrated status even prior to being a Hurricane, people were wondering why we got somewhat unknown player who looks more like an IT guy than a hockey guy, lol. His "less sizzle, more substance" must have been off-putting to some fans 2 year ago when they were just getting to "know" him.

Anyway - when Stillman continued to pile up points that first season, the jokes just kept coming.

edit: was it really puck_it? well then that's even funnier.

I'm like 98% sure it's Puck_It, but I'm at work and can't really devote the time/energy to searching for it. I'm sure it's still here.... somewhere......

He's the one that brought it to this board, but I dunno if he came up with it or if he heard it from somewhere.

He's pretty good for one liners.

Stillman NEVER gets the attention he deserves, IMO. I'm still trying to choose my "name" sweater (got one of the new generic ones in the meantime.) First, it was surely going to be Brindy or Cole. THEN I started thinking about Hedican and Stillman ... how they're SO important to the team. YIKES! If I win the lottery, I'll just buy four and rotate ... :)

I think NCC needs to tell her Stillman jersey story. :D

It's not THAT interesting.

I've had a plain jersey since I got a cheapy during the lockout (I think it was $29?). Anyway, I'd worn it all season empty because I just didn't have a compulsion to personalize it (I love all the hurricanes players equally). Anyway, it was the Mother's Day playoff game vs. New Jersey. It had been a beautiful day and we'd tailgated and I was having a good time. :D

During one intermission, I walked down to the satellite jersey store just behind the Deck. I sorta knew someone that worked there and asked him if I could get the jersey personalized before the end of the game. He said "yeah" but that they didn't have all the players available. I asked him to list who they did have and I think the third one was Stillman and I said "that's it". I whipped off the jersey, he took it, I went and got another beer at Dos Bandidos and before I finished it, the jersey was personalized. I went back to my section and danced in the aisle to show it off.

I admit that I didn't get back to my seat until the 1st stoppage which has my family wondering WTF had happened to me since I'm NEVER late for the puck drop.

I simply don't understand this thread. Who is this "Cory Stillman" ya'll are talking about? Is he on our team? How come I've never heard of him?

ETA: BTW, does he do anything on this team?

i coined it in nov of 05... people were *****ing at CH.com about how he was a terrible signing and my post consisted of a totally sarcastic YEAH STILLMAN DOESNT DO ANYTHING and a quick run down on his projected goals and assists totals. (he was like 12th in league scoring at the time)

he had like a four point night the next night. Told the story over here, and my location became "stillman doesnt do anything" and the rest is history. (and for the record, my goals and assists were spot on that year, +/- 2)

Stiller and i have a bond. It's how I called his hatty the other night, dude owes me money, yo. Contract season.

Well, DUH! What HAVE I been thinking! I didn't know you could buy the plain jersey, and have it personalized later. (Makes perfect sense!) I have one of the new white ones ... that I paid $120 for. What it will cost to personalize it, and do I just have it done there at the Eye? (Bear with me, guys, I'm still new to all this!)

So even the add-on names have gone up?

It was $55 two years ago and they could do it at the little jersey store just across from North end sections on the first level concourse.

Geez, that's a steep hike!

Spend $2 on a Sharpie, and I can have it ready for you by 1st Intermission!

Guyute

What's worse is they want nearly the same amount of money to change an "A" to a "C" as they do for putting a name on. At least, that was the case when Rod was "promoted"... hence my "vintage" Brindy jersey with an A. lol

WHOA! I could've sworn that the $75 was only for the new authentic jerseys (they send away for the numbers/nameplate on those). Jeebus...

do you want the name/number sewed on or heat pressed?

I was in the little Eye on North End and they are still heat pressing names and you can pick up by the 1st intermission. And I'm pretty sure its still $55 there.

Usually the 6-8 weeks is to have it sewn on.

59larose, have people noticed much difference in the way the lettering holds up/on, heat-press VS. hand-stitched? (Thanks so much for the info!)

Opinions here, all, on one process VS the other?

After my big beer-induced Stillman personalization, both SoCal and IceSaber inspected it at the next game. I believe it was acceptable to their standards. And y'all know how SoCal is.

I think it looks good and so far they are holding up well. No problems as of yet. They do a decent job there. And usually if you drop it off during warm ups they will have it ready for you at the 1st intermission.

Ya'll are just rollin' and so proud of yourselves aren't you??:laugh:

Yes, Ice and I marveled at the heat pressed #61 jersey, they do a great job; and I was so impressed, I had them do one of my blank $30-on-ebay-during-the-lockout jerseys with #11 Williams on the back- which is now signed by Willy. This was last season and I paid $55 and got my STHer discount. I have another one that is calling somebody's name- I just can't decide WHO. I'm this close to Seidenberg and this close to Gleason. But anyway, it's worth the intermission visit to get it done.

All this yakking and Stillman still does nothing.

BTW: Has anybody had the X patch added to their jersey during the game? How long did it take?

Canesluver

Do you own an iron? They're iron-on, dude. It took me about 2 or 3 minutes at home.

Just don’t ask Stillman to do it….. it’ll just lay-around forever on his ironing board, and he’ll never get around to it.

Opening night it took them the same time, drop off at warm up and pick up my intermission. But I've been in there since and some they are doing right away where you can just wait 5 mins and its done. Depends on how many jersey's they got going.

SCC, If I can ever find the 'vintage' jersey, i'm picking one up and I'm thisclose to getting LaRose and thisclose to getting Gleason. I've already got 2 forwards (Cole, Willie), so thinking Gleason. He's becoming my new hero :)

If Stillman were from Philly we'd make movies about him.

If only he'd do something.

(Also he leads the NHL in production value (average ice time per point). Where's that graph of salary to points when you need it?)

I mean really how many single guys do you know that have an iron (and actually know how to use it)?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playerranking?week=5&season=2008

Cory is rated the 9th best player in the league according to this week's "Player Rankings".

Aggravatingly, ESPN's stats sorter gives people with 0 points a "0:00" production value (when it should be infinitely high, not zero!) and sorts them above all the people with actual production values to look at, so you have to skip a few pages:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/statistics?stat=nhlmorescoring&sort=prod&league=nhl&order=true&row1=101&pos=all&qual=true&season=2008&seasontype=2

Stillman #1

Staal #7

Cullen #9

Brindy #13

Williams #17

Whitney #21

Cole #25

Hamilton #33

Yup, of the top 33 in PROD we've got 8. (But Aucoin is #39, so that shows you how interesting looking only at PROD can be!)
