Stars may move Sydor in trade

The days of the spend-now, think-later Stars are apparently gone.
In an effort to continue to reduce payroll after the 2003-04 season, NHL sources said Monday the Stars are working on a three-team deal that would send defenseman Darryl Sydor to one of three teams.
In return, the Coyotes are expected to deal veteran defenseman Teppo Numminen to the Stars. The holdup could be that the Coyotes are seeking too much from the third team involved in the trade.
League sources said Numminen, 35, has agreed to waive his no-trade clause and defer a portion of his salary for next season.
A deal could be announced as early as today.
Numminen has spent his entire 15-year career in the Phoenix/Winnipeg Jets organization where he has scored 108 goals and assisted on 426 for 534 points. All three figures are organizational records by a defenseman. He had six goals and 24 assists in 78 games for Phoenix last season. His 1,098 games for the same organization is second among active NHL players behind Detroit's Steve Yzerman's 1,378.
Numminen was rumored to be dealt to several contending teams before last season's NHL deadline.
Regarded as one of the better offensive-defensemen in the NHL, Numminen is attractive to the Stars not only because of his ability, but also because of his contract.
He is scheduled to make $4.5 million next season. More importantly, he will be a free agent at season's end. Sydor is entering the second year of a five-year, $15.8 million contract he signed on Feb. 5, 2002.
The 31-year-old has spent the past seven-plus seasons with the Stars. A two-time All-Star with the Stars, he scored five goals with 36 points in 81 games last season.
But the emergence of Philippe Boucher and Stephane Robidas, plus a more committed approach to the bottom line, has altered the way the Stars handle their blue line. They already decided to part ways with free-agent defenseman Derian Hatcher, who signed a five-year contract with the rival Red Wings this month. The Stars offered Hatcher a three-year deal.
With the threat of a salary cap coming after next season, the Stars are committed to clearing payroll space for a host of potential free agents on their roster; most notably, Mike Modano, Jason Arnott and Jere Lehtinen.
Should goalie Marty Turco agree to a one-year contract this off-season, he too could be due another contract.
Arena named for Modano
This past weekend, Westland, Mich., renamed its ice arena in honor of hometown hero Mike Modano.
The Stars center played in various hockey leagues at the arena, which used to be called the Westland Sports Arena. Westland is located 25 miles west of Detroit.
