HURRICANES RECALL KURKA, WATT FROM LOWELL
KEN PRESTON
Forwards to Join Team in Montreal

RALEIGH, N.C. – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has recalled left wings Tomas Kurka and Mike Watt from Lowell of the American Hockey League. Kurka and Watt will be available for the Hurricanes’ game Saturday against Montreal at the Bell Centre (7 p.m., Fox SportsNet).

Kurka played for Carolina in Tuesday’s night game against Ottawa before being reassigned to the Lock Monsters. Kurka (5’ 11”, 190 lbs.) was selected by Carolina in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, and has played eight NHL games. He scored his first NHL goal in his NHL debut on Feb. 26 at Phoenix, and added a goal and an assist on Tuesday against Ottawa. In 59 games with Lowell this season, Kurka, 21, has 16 goals and 11 assists (27 points) and ranks tied for fifth on the team in scoring. A native of Most, Czech Republic, Kurka turned professional last season and had 13 goals and 15 assists (28 points) in 71 regular-season games with Lowell. He played two seasons with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League prior to turning professional and totaled 108 points (51 goals, 57 assists) in 111 regular-season games.

Watt (6’ 2’’, 212 lbs.) was signed as a free agent by Carolina in the 2002 offseason. The Seaforth, Ont., native has played 152 NHL games with Edmonton, New York Islanders and Nashville, scoring 41 points (15g, 26a) and accumulating 45 penalty minutes. Watt, 26, has eight goals and 11 assists (19 points) in 57 games with Lowell this season. He was selected by Edmonton in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.

The Hurricanes return to the RBC Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m. to face Toronto. Tickets are available via the team’s official website, CarolinaHurricanes.com, the Dodge Box Office at RBC Center or by calling 919-834-4000.

Well, well...interesting...

Anyone see the article in the Naive and Opressed regarding Hooters Air? I hope some of these boys get to ride it, considering they are yo-yoing back and forth.

I'm excited to see Watt...although I don't figure he'll get too much time. Will he get his first goal?

No Surma... but that's cool. It's more about giving different guys a shot at this point. The organization knows what Surma brings to the table by now. He should get another shot before the year's over though.

Excited to see Kurka on his way back up, though.

You mean first goal as a Cane? He's scored 15 goals in 152 NHL games.

Watt shall be interesting to watch, as Kurka already is. Watt may already have his first NHL goal, but it will be fun seeing him get his first goal as a Cane. :spin:

Indeed it shall...and thanks for saving me--I'm a little unspecific today I guess.

My first thought was "Who's Watt... and I thought Tomas Kurka was done a long time ago?"

What does Samson have to do to get another call-up? Score 40 goals instead of 37?

Alternatively, being named Kurka or Watt would work.
