How ironic -- I'm in Atlanta on business -- and the guys will be here sometime today for a game. Nice! :D And I might even be done with work in time to go to the game tomorrow..... maybe....
So, I guess it's an understatement to say this game is a must win, right?!
So, boys--- get angry, O.K? Reach out -- put on your revenge game faces, and grab a victory? Please?

O.K... could a mod edit my thread title to say.... 1/04/08??? I could do that in the interior thread title, but not in the main thread title.
I'm trying to multi-task too much!! Thanks!

More in the injured fraternity....
Look out Frantisek Kaberle and Eric Staal.
When the Canes took the ice for practice Thursday, uniform numbers 6 (Bret Hedican), 7 (Niclas Wallin), 8 (Matt Cullen), 9 (unofficially retired -- Gordie Howe), 10 (officially retired -- Ron Francis) and 11 (Justin Williams) were all missing.
Also missing: Andrew Ladd, Dennis Seidenberg, Scott Walker and David Tanabe, who practiced yesterday. Seidenberg didn't practice Tuesday and the Canes have been giving him days off to rest an undisclosed injury. Tanabe took the morning skate Wednesday in an attempt to recover from his concussion. Not sure what his absence means. I'll update Ladd and Walker after practice.
UPDATE, 11:49 A.M.: Ladd had surgery to repair his fractured orbital and is questionable for Friday. Walker suffered a sprained knee in the second period — he played through it, including a chance to win the game in OT — and is doubtful for Friday.
With Ladd and Walker in doubt, look for the Canes to make another call-up from Albany (AHL) this afternoon. You have to figure Brandon Nolan earned another shot, but who knows.

I think it may be a good game for Leighton to get a shot. You have Kovalchuk, who's going to school any goalie.. but other than that, they SHOULD be a team we can handle.
Though, a quarter of our team will be River Rats... so, who knows... lol

Nolan and Aucoin on their way!
From Luke:
Defenseman Casey Borer made his NHL debut on defense Wednesday and Keith Aucoin and Brandon Nolan are on their way back from Albany (AHL) today.
Wise choices. Aucoin has been around the block enough to fit back in with little risk and hopefully Nolan can pick up where he left off.
Luke lists Walker as 7-10 days and Ladd as Day to Day.

While we're at it, let's bring in Tomas Kurka, Brad DeFauw, Damian Surma and Jeff Heerema too. It got so bad that season that Kurka kept shuttling back and forth between Raleigh and Lowell because the other 3 got hurt in Raleigh after being called up. He's the only one who played more than 10 games here.

Well this should be interesting: FSN SOUTH, SPORTSOUTH GO BEHIND ENEMY LINES
FOR HURRICANES @ THRASHERS ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 4
Telecasts to Feature “Swap the Announcers” Period during the Second
FSN South and SportSouth invite viewers to go behind enemy lines when the Carolina Hurricanes visit the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday, January 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET. During the second period, Thrashers analyst Darren Eliot will join Hurricanes play-by-play announcer John Forslund in the FSN South booth to provide Hurricanes fans with a unique perspective on the growing regional rivalry between the two teams. Similarly, Hurricanes analyst Tripp Tracy will join Thrashers play-by-play announcer JP Dellacamera in the booth for the Thrashers telecast on SportSouth.
“As broadcast partner for both the Hurricanes and the Thrashers, we at FSN South and SportSouth have the unique opportunity to provide a different and innovative perspective for our viewers by ‘swapping’ analysts for the second period of Friday’s game,” said Hammond Reynolds, executive producer for FSN South and SportSouth. “Thrashers fans will be treated to Tripp’s perspective on the Hurricanes during the SportSouth telecast, while Hurricanes fans will get inside scoop on the Thrashers from Darren on FSN South.”

And more about Injuries and Call ups:
Cullen, Tanabe and Walker placed on injured reserve
RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled goaltender Michael Leighton and forwards Keith Aucoin and Brandon Nolan from the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League, Carolina’s top minor-league affiliate. The players are being recalled as the Hurricanes have placed defenseman David Tanabe (concussion), and forwards Matt Cullen (illness) and Scott Walker (knee) on injured reserve.
This marks Leighton’s first recall to the NHL since joining the Hurricanes organization during the 2007 off-season. The 26-year-old netminder has played in 30 games for the River Rats this season, and currently ranks first in the AHL with five shutouts, tied for fourth with 13 wins, fourth with a 2.14 goals-against average and second with a .928 save percentage. Leighton (6’3”, 186 lbs.) is in his seventh professional season and has played in 47 NHL games with Chicago, Nashville and Philadelphia, recording a 10-23-10 record, a 3.03 goals-against average and three shutouts. The Petrolia, Ont., native was drafted by the Blackhawks in the fifth round, 165th overall, at the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, and acquired by the Hurricanes from Montreal on June 23, 2007, in exchange for a 2007 seventh-round draft pick.
The Hurricanes are recalling Aucoin, 29, for the second time this season. The Waltham, MA, native played in six games with Carolina following his first recall of the season on Oct. 21, and recorded two assists while averaging 6:33 of ice time per game. On Dec. 13, the AHL named Aucoin (5’9”, 187 lbs.) captain for the PlanetUSA team at the 2008 AHL All-Star Classic, scheduled for Jan. 28 in Binghamton, NY. Aucoin leads the River Rats with 25 assists and 32 points while playing in 29 of the team’s 37 games this season. Aucoin has earned four assists in 21 career NHL games, all with Carolina, since signing with the Hurricanes as a free agent on Aug. 4, 2005.
Nolan, 24, returns to the Hurricanes after being reassigned to Albany on Dec. 28 following his first career NHL recall. The St. Catharine’s, Ont., native made his NHL debut in Carolina’s 4-1 win at Tampa Bay on Dec. 22, and earned his first NHL point with an assist in that game. He is tied for the River Rats team lead with 13 goals this season, and ranks second on the team with 26 points while playing in 31 of the team’s 37 games. Nolan (6’1”, 192 lbs.) is in his fifth professional season and has played in 185 AHL regular-season games with Manitoba, Bridgeport and Albany, recording 36 goals, 52 assists (88 points) and 162 penalty minutes.

It's way too early for a "must win" game, but boy, it seems like a good win would go a long way to helping this team maybe get back on track a little bit.
Glad to see Nolan back up, sad to see Cullen and Walks back on the freaking IR.
Rex is a solid presence for Atlanta, and Holik seems to love to play us. It would be nice to score early and often and keep out of the penalty box. (Hoping for a good show on the penalty kill seems like wishful thinking.)

I hope someone posts this on the locker room wall (from the AJC):
Raleigh — In a twisted sort of way, Wednesday's 5-4 overtime victory against Carolina was just part of the game plan:
Be wary of trying to run and gun with the Hurricanes. Wait for them to make mistakes in the neutral zone, and convert.
- - - - - -
"We stuck to our game plan and got the big two points," said Hossa, who has two goals since Dec. 7 and 14 goals on the season. "Just be patient against this team, waiting for mistakes in the middle zone."

Tonight's lineups
Mike Leighton gets thrown right into the nets tonight, which most goalies will tell you is the way they want it anyway.
Five players in tonight's Carolina lineup started the season with Albany (AHL) — Keith Aucoin, Casey Borer, Wade Brookbank, Leighton and Brandon Nolan.
Andrew Ladd is on his way to Atlanta today after facial surgery Thursday and could play tomorrow in St. Louis.
Kari Lehtonen gets the start over Johan Hedberg in goal for the Thrashers, who replace Eric Boulton (knee) with rookie Kevin Doell.

I don't think you'll see those six guys on the ice very much. I will be shocked if any of them get over 12:00 minutes of ice time. A little surprised if they even get 10:00. Lavi is gonna pull a Torts and play his top 6 guys into the ground. And that, IMO, is going to make for a long sad Saturday night in St. Louis which is OK if we take two points from the Thrashers.

Heck any combination of names in the third/fourth line makes me shudder. No offense to any of those players but it just shows that we are being held together by silly string right now. We have been inconsistent with a much better lineup than this so I can't get too enthused right now.
I agree Guyute, what I saw of Nolan should earn him more ice time than Aucoin. It's just that we now have 2 lines of role players, not to mention that Chad's one of our more reliable top line guys.

Anyhoo- it pops up on my phone "ML is starting" and normally my texts show who is texting before I open them- but this one was blank- anyway- the cryptic part comes in the fact I had been on this call and trying to open a window on my laptop to check on what's going on- and our company wireless is on the fritz- but I was 'wondering' in my head "wonder if Peter will start Leighton" and I get her text. Honest to gosh, I need to play the lotto. LMAO. Go Leighton!

I don't really consider it cocky if you speak the plain truth. He gets no arguement whatsoever from me.
I'd add a few things to the game plan that will definitely work against us like hitting us a couple times hard and we'll curl up in the fetal position.
But his comments about a transition game plan based off mistakes we make coming through the neutral zone is very true. Our inability to generate a rush and move the puck, make a pass that actually sticks to the stick of the receipient, etc. has been brutal at times this year. We either have one guy go coast to coast without passing at all (which means he gets swallowed up by 4 guys as he hits the blue line and coughs up the puck), everyone dumps the puck from center ice and then don't really chase it, or we make a bad, telegraphed pass that the opponents are sitting on or it doesn't even catch the receipient right so that they can continue up ice in stride.
We've had flashes of doing this somewhat well. But overall, it's been pretty pathetic to watch us rush the puck up ice. That might be why JR continues to look for that puck moving d-man... one can dream anyways....
here's hoping all the kids actually infuse a bit of jump in the line-up... but this many scrubs isn't putting me in a super cheery mood this afternoon... taking my Donnie Downer mood elsewhere ;)

Mike Sundheim has updated his blog to announce that Jeff Hamilton's wife gave birth this morning and that Jeff is back in Atlanta for tonight's game.
New Additions
Jan. 4, 2008
We were just pulling away from the airplane to head to the hotel yesterday afternoon when Jeff Hamilton started sneaking up toward the front of the plane, trying to get Brian Tatum’s attention. On a day that the Hurricanes were already keeping their travel agent busy with transaction-related travel, Tates was going to have to book one more round-trip flight.
During our journey from Raleigh to Atlanta, Jeff’s wife, Jane, had left a message on his cell phone. The baby that the doctors had told them would not arrive for several more days was in fact on its way, immediately. Jeff rode the bus to our downtown hotel, and then immediately hopped in a cab back to the airport to return to Raleigh. He managed to catch a flight just after 5 p.m. to be with Jane as they awaited the arrival of their first child.
Michael Donahoe Hamilton was born this morning at 7:22 a.m., weighing in at 8 lbs, 3 oz. As for the proud father, Jeff will return to Atlanta this afternoon, on the same flight as Andrew Ladd (who had stayed in Raleigh yesterday after surgery was performed on his face), arriving just before 2 p.m. Jeff will be available to play in tonight’s game – which is a good thing, because Ladd and Niclas Wallin will still be out of the lineup, along with the five players the Canes currently have on Injured Reserve (Williams, Cullen, Hedican, Tanabe and Walker).http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&id=2412

Wow - congrats to the Hamiltons. I know we're short handed so I guess it's just how pro sports works, but to have a baby born at 7:22am and be back at the airport around noon? That's kinda harsh. Hopefully that was Jeff and Jane's decision, not a directive. :eek2:
And really - the man was up all night...how useful will he be?

apolinar and I are going to be at Blinco's--anyone who wants to can come say hey and join us for le jeu. It'll be fun! We can yell at Tripp together (for first and third periods)! We'll make fun of Party Time Kovalchuk!

Hamilton will be in New Daddy scoring mode- I've seen a couple broadcasts- CLB and EDM, where guys wives just gave birth they were running on adreneline and scored or had awesome games. go on Hammer!
I saw Hyena on during Hurricanes Live pregame- and ya'll I almost broke down and lost my cookies when Forslund had the Reccin' ball on reminsicing about 05-06. What a friggin class act Recchi is. He crowed about how well he was treated, the time with the guys, and is "bond for life". Now you guys know I'm a boo-hooing fool when it comes to this stuff- so it wasn't pretty. :- And now he plays for the Thrash and I'll never hate him- but dang, it is tough to see him in that jersey. He'll always be our guy though.
Sounds like lots of Caniacs representing. I'm now kicking myself that we decided not to use our tix and go to this one- the All Star Game is around the corner so we thought two trips to ATL in a month, now I'm bummed, lol.
Did anyone else catch Gleason in the pregame show interview? He kept referring to #17 as "that guy" and "#17" never calling him by name and being the bad ass that he is., lol. 59Larose will be proud....

Is this Jared Staal's draft year?
He's born in 1990, so I *think* he should be eligible. But I must be wrong, otherwise surely he would be listed:
http://www.mynhldraft.com/
(2008 NHL Mock Draft.)
He's not listed top 5 in either 2008 or 2009:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?fid=7006&hubname=
He's not in the top 30 for 2008:
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/10030/iss_top302008_for_november/
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/10086/iss_top302008_for_december/
So my guess... 2009? Maybe because his birthday (August) is after the draft.

2nd most wins in a season last year, huh? Well, you know what? doesnt matter one bit. We missed the playoffs. Period. You dont play for individual season records, you play to win the Stanley Cup. You cant win it if you dont get to the playoffs. Anything but a playoff berth is a regular season failure. It's really that simple.
I know where we stand within our division, but if you havent noticed the Points Per Game... wer'e spiraling downward.
If you want to take a tounge in cheek comment seriously, go ahead, but really we havent made the playoffs yet, and we didnt last year.

Leighton bounced back from giving up a goal on the first shot (I think?) to have a solid game and pick up his first win as a Hurricane.
And Casey Borer, Wow! This guy has impressed me ever since he showed up for the prospect camp, then camp Brind'Amour, then training camp and now in his first 2 NHL games. He has played well, showed great poise, and never looked out of place. It was very nice to see him get his first regular season point and goal (he got a goal in one of the preseason games).

Now that you mention mojo...so glad Time Warner in the Raleigh market got their act together and had the HD feed on Mojo - 291 for the whole game and not just the last few minutes like we saw on Saturday.
Also, here's hoping the entire FSN broadcast schedule is in HD next year. I love watching games in person but man...hockey in HD sure gives it a run for its money. I think the wide angle of viewing we get in HD makes all the difference in the world for TV viewing.

It appeared that this was an inside joke for the Canes. Stillman, probably anticipating the dive, just toyed around before gaining possession of the puck.
I like when veteran leadership takes over.
And we really need to keep Borer up. I'm hoping that kids having fun rubs off on the squad.

So nice to win on a 5 on 3.. how do you like those apples thugs? and does anybody hate Excelby as much as me? Freakin thug..and Ilya Gurganus didn't get the ending like he got here huh?
Great finish..great win. I was very proud of the guys and how they kept the puck out of the zone.

Woo hoo!
I decided to just yell very loudly whatever I was thinking since I was in my FNLR. I went from yelling YOU SUCK HAMILTON to YOU'RE AWESOME HAMILTON on the same PP shift. I yelled at XLB for punching Brindy after the whistle and was snarling so badly at the TV that my kid (who came in to see what the ruckus was) literally fell down laughing.
I have to admit that there were about 3 ATL shots that I thought went in because Leighton froze and I think the HD picture was so clear that I saw the puck on the other side of the net and thought it was in.
I'm SO happy for hyena, czech it, and CL (and all the other Caniacs) that got to see this in person.
Trivia: JF said that the Canes have only lost twice in regulation in ATL ever...and I was at TWO of those games.

Our 2nd period wasn't the dreaded 2nd and our 3rd period remained our period. Yah, I'm so giddy with excitement. I forgot what it feels like to win a game.
As for Casey Borer, please keep him. Congrats to him for his first goal. I sure hope a teammate picked up the puck for him. And its so good seeing the guys all smiling and very happy for him.
Staal is back to the Staal we all know and love. And I'm still loving his line. A force everytime they are on the ice.
Leighton was alright. He seemed to settle in better as the game went on. Which is expected. Hopefully with his first game under his belt, his next one he won't be as nervous.
Oh and nice hit Nolan on Holik. Nice, me liked that alot :)
As for Kovalchuk, he is an ass. Nice dive again by him. Glad this time it didn't work out into his favor. Now I can say to him Karma is a beatch.
HUGE win tonight, we needed those 2 points bad.

^ Sorry.
Love this quote from Luke's blog:
If Casey Borer was fired up after picking up his first NHL assist, he was bouncing around like a schoolkid after his first NHL goal.
“Was it obnoxious?” Borer asked. “I didn’t really know what to do. Coach just said, try to shoot it on net. That’s what I did. It happened to hit the post and go in.”

Mona I saw Hyena on a shot during warmups during the pregame show..... yeah E, stay away from ATL..... !
Proud that they stayed the course, now just 60 minutes tomorrow. STL will not be a picnic. Andy Murray's got this team going well all season- and they've turned a corner. They're beatable but we can't be all goofy out there.
Oh, and E, I wish I had a camera on all the FNLR action at your place. I'm sure I'd be laughing at you too. (or not much better since I did alot of shouting at the TV, lol)
Edit: LMAO- Borer is too cute. "Was it obnoxious?" lol.

^^Very cute. I rewound his reaction a number of times because he just looked dumbfounded and so happy.
After his assist, they (JF and DE) talked about Staal and had the camera fixed on him on the bench. It appeared that he and others were reaching down to congratulate Borer. I kept directing the camera to pan down so we could see Borer on the bench receiving his teammate's congrats, but they didn't listen to me.
I wonder if they'll stick Nolan and Borer with a rookie dinner in Boston. I hope they let the guys earn some NHL money before they force them to take 20 guys out! I bet Borer is hoping Nolan stays around to help foot the bill!

Here's another good one, from the AP recap on ch.com:
Leighton said he was surprised to be called up. The start was even more unexpected.
"An hour after I arrived, I was told I'd start," Leighton said. "I did pretty good - in the second and third periods."

Man, that first was infuriatingly abysmal.
Damn glad they decided to come out and play later. I really loved Borer during preseason, and he's still impressing the hell out of me. Find someone to take Kaberle, and keep Borer up.
Staal hasn't always been on it this season (who has? lol)... but the boy knows how to take over a game when he sets his mind on it. 13 points in his last 10 games. Not bad.
Leighton is kind of funny to watch. He Looks awkward (even when he's not)... just because he's so damn tall. I hope Cam responds to the challenge.

hey guys, checking in from ATL
caught up with CL and we brought the good mojo to the boys tonight! well, probably not, but I guess the Rivercanes (lol) decided to come play...
heart sank when that first Trash goal went in...all I could think was oh no, Leighton, WTF, not already!
and that 2nd period? wow, they looked like they had a fire under them for large parts of it....amazing. AND PP goals? AND we kept Kovalchump from scoring a goal? how many miracles can we have in one night? oh and speaking of that punk #17, did he dive at the end or was it a legit penalty? just wondering because i couldn't contain myself and screamed "nice dive, kovalchuk!"
a lot more Caniacs in attendance then I expected....during warmups i saw a nice sign that said "61 still the man" and thought of you, E :D
I'm so glad CL made it in plenty of time and saw a win. And you're right, socal, those seats are sweet. YAY even with so many guys hurt we still won. what a great night :D

Did I really see us score more in the second than the other team?
The Youngbloods really lit a fire up and did a great job. This says a lot for the current depth of our team right now. NOW LET's NOT REPEAT 02-03 where every newcomer scores their first NHL goal then breaks a foot or clavicle.. This isn't showbusiness you know where you want to break a leg or anything as good luck.

Hi!!!!! I'm safely back in my hotel..... after taking a 20-minute detour by getting on the wrong MARTA train!! But..... I was chatting with 4 college boys who were at the game--- so I blame THEM for distracting me to the point that I missed my stop!!! Too bad I didn't get their cell numbers-- 'cause they told me I have a standing invitation to go get kamakazees with them!!!!
I am SO glad I got to go to the game!!! I had such an awesome time -- really --- from the moment I left my hotel. While I was waiting for the train to arrive at the station to get to Philips, this guy in his upper 20's wearing a Thrasher's jersey got on with his Dad, and we had a great chat. The guy's name was Walter. We exchanged some friendly smack talk, and they helped me get to the arena and find the Box Office. Walter dad took a picture of me and Walter on my cell phone.
Once I got to the arena, I found Hyena & Shetal (sp?) down at the glass, so I watched the pre-game skate with them. Took a few pictures on my cell-- will have to see how they turned out.......

O.K... I'm back.... had to pee.......... beer does that, you know.
O.K.... so where was I?.... Oh yeah--- made it to the arena.
My usher was a HOOT. I was in section 112, next to A., who was in 113 (that sec. was sold-out). He was a skinny tall elderly black man-- reminded me of Nipsey Wilson (for those of you old enough to know who that is) I was in the last row of the section, so he talked to me a lot. I was the only person sitting on my end of the row, with at least 8 or 9 empty seats to my right. He was really funny. Since I didn't get his name-- we'll just call him Nipsy.
I was kind of worried after ATL's quickie that went in. I just had an "Oh no-- this is going to be a long night" kind of feeling, but I was determined to have a good time. So-- I just blew around the concourse at the 1st Intermission.
But then the 2nd period came along, and magically we started to play better..... and Leighton seemed to gain more confidence as the game went along..... so I started feeling better.
And OMG, y'all I now have a new superstition. Right when our PP start (that Staal scored-on), I took off my gloves 'cause I thought-- "If we score I want my hands to really make a lot of noise!" And sure enough HE SCORED... so from that point on.... I took my gloves off when we had a PP.. and kept them on everytime else..... and we got another PPG!!! So..... now that means I'll have to keep doing it!!!!
OK... BRB.... need to wash my face.....

Where was I, again????? At 2nd Intermission, chatted up Shetal & Hyena on the concourse. It was so much more fun to saunter around the concourse for the 2nd Intermission, since the boys put on a scoring show for us.
Just LOVEd getting to see Borer get his first points! :D And don't worry everyone-- it wasn't his FIRST game with us, so I don't think the hockey gods can pull-out the rookie curse of '02-'03. ;)
And Leighton did so well to keep ATL from getting ahead in the 3rd. He acquited himself very well for his first time in a 'Canes uniform.
Can't wait to check-out the highlights, and hit the DVR when I get home.
The walk back to the MARTA station was fun, 'cause every time I'd spot a 'Canes jersey or sweatshirt, we'd high-5. And then I met those 4 guys waiting for a train. It was a mass of humanity at the station, and those 4 guys were actually really sweet to make sure I made it on that train. They called themselves ACME: the Archdale Court Men of Excellence!! They said they all lived in the same cul-de-sac (i.e. court). I told them they needed to form a bowling team and put that on the back of their shirts!! We were cutting up the whole way, until they got off, and then I realized that I'd missed my stop!!!!
So.... are you paying attention NCC/Guin/SHC/Dreamie?.... 'cause this is what you're in store for when I hit the Sommet Center next month!! Y'all need to keep an eye on me!!!!!!!

And Ken Klee - what an ass! Did he really think that Staal wasn't bleeding and the refs just wanted to give us 4? Did he miss where he had to return to the bench to try and stop the bleeding before the next face off?
Klee was still steaming about the high-sticking call after the game.
"He raised my stick; it bumped him in the head. Apparently there was a massive gash no one else in the world could see. I don't know how it was four minutes," Klee said. "I didn't see any blood, I didn't see a thing. ... It's not like I'm swinging at him."

I try not too get too high or too low on our players. As an example, I still hold out hope that Frank the Tank is going to turn things around.
However....I am VERY, VERY impressed with Casey Borer. He has more poise and awareness than any of our DMen outside of Wesley. I have yet to see him make a mistake on the ice. His decisions are made quickly and correctly...are you watching Seids ??
This kid could become our version of Paul Ranger. Added to Casey's smarts is an offensive upside that gives the Canes a solid blue liner for years to come.

Yes, I definitely meant, "Nipsy Russell!" Flip Wilson is too short for a good comparison!
Nipsy was awesome, and he said he didn't know anything about hockey until the Thrashers came to town. He said he'd sit with people who knew a lot to watch the game, and ask them questions. Now, he says he's "addicted to hockey," and chatted with me in-depth about their game at the RBC on Wed. night. It was obvious he had been riveted to the TV for that one.
OH..... one more thing..... since I've gotten several PMs asking me a specific question, I'll go ahead and mention it here, to hopefully cease the stream of PMs I'm getting:
Yes--- I did show my Cup tattoo to the college guys on the train. That is all.
