So, off on a 5-game road stretch the boys go. But they're spread-out nicely, and judging from the practice schedule it looks like they're coming home every now and then, so they're not really away from home for 2 entire weeks. I be they kinda like that.
So... it's off to Pittsburgh! And no Sidney! Weeeeeeeeeeeee!:yippee: Of course, they've still got Malkin, and seem to be managing w/out Crosby O.K.......... I just had to get that dig in!

So, here we sit having won 4 of our last 5. Brind'Amour and Wesley both have been quoted as saying they need a minimum of 20 more wins. So, that's 2 down, 18 more to go. I say.... just go for all 30!!

Play hard, play smart and if you want to wait until there are 2:00 left in the 2nd period to appear that is fine..as long as you win. :)

The Latest from Pittsburgh

Colby Armstrong  skated for the first time in almost a week after missing the Penguins past two games with the flu. He hopes to return for Saturday's game against the Hurricanes. - Tribune Review

Well since we've won the last 2 games I better not mess with the Mojo:

We need to draw a line in the sand on the ice, the blue line is important, we can't flat line on the blue line. And we should control the neutral zone like the Swiss in the war but not be like Swiss Cheese.

Well Cullen won't be traveling with the team today :(

Frustrated Cullen sitting out indefinitely

Matt Cullen won't travel with the Hurricanes to Pittsburgh this afternoon and doesn't know when he'll rejoin the team. Even Cullen called it an "ongoing saga."

He didn't skate Friday and remains out indefinitely with vision problems stemming from the head injury — the team maintains it wasn't a concussion, even as he has been diagnosed with any number of concussion symptoms — he suffered Dec. 26.

A team of specialists is working with Cullen on his vision problems, mainly changing his focus from near to far while on the ice.

"It's been frustrating because physically I feel great," Cullen said. I can practice fine, I can skate, I can handle the puck. I'm just having trouble seeing things on the ice normally."

Cullen missed two games after he was injured before trying to come back and making it through only a period. He then sat out the next seven games before returning to play in the next four. He was scratched from Thursday's win and won't play Saturday against the Penguins.

Oh my word. Poor Matt.

Even in my glee last night over the win and after Mr. Socal told me earlier that Chuck K. said "blurred vision issues" at the beginning of the game, I was immediately concerned. You need ony look at all of the people just this season, who have had some concussion/head injury issues (Gagne and Bergeron come to mind- Bergeron obviously in a worse situation) this isn't something to take lightly. Gagne, did almost exactly what Cullen did- took a hard hit, was concussed, was out a couple games, then back in, and was foggy/had issues, then back out again. Gagne missed what 25+ games and just came back? Right there, I'm concerned. Cullen seemed out of sorts on his return a few games ago, I was really hoping the AS break would have given him some extra time, but this is not good.

and on another similar note, it's like Tanabe doesn't even exist with his concussion and all. I mean they don't even give an update anymore. David is not Matt, but you see me working here.

You know, this whole "it wasn't a concussion" is just ridiculous at this point.

Very scary stuff if you ask me. I hope they can get a handle on his real status and he stays out until it's truly no long an issue.

It is possible to have post concussion syndrome without actually having a concussion. If he passed his baseline tests, then it wasn't a concussion, regardless of the after effects.

But yes, he needs to stay off the ice until it's resolved.

Is that like being "a little bit pregnant"? ;)

I guess it just seems like we're talking about semantics.

SoCalcaniac
02-01-2008, 02:15 PM
Exactly E, a little pregnant indeed.

It was a concussion, he was knocked out. Passing the baseline is all well and good, but he's showing all kinds of symptoms and he's not able to play.

It's just annoying to me that nobody will admit to him being concussed.

My concern is for this player, and I'm sure the Canes are concerned. I'm just not too thrilled that they can't just admit that he was concussed.

c-girl
02-01-2008, 02:43 PM
I don't understand it either. The information I found was that if you are knocked out, you are deemed to have been concussed. There's no leeway.

They hide everything. How many times have we had a player out and they say it is because of "an undisclosed injury" and we never find out what it was. Seems like Brindy's injuries tend to be described that way.

This is funny--from nhl.com's game preview:

Ty Conklin (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8469152) has more than made up for Fleury's absence, however. The career backup has made 15 starts since Dec. 20, going 11-3-1 with a 2.00 goals-against average. He's never faced the Hurricanes.

We've won 4 of 5 for the third time this season. (Once in October, once in early November.) Let's go for 5 of 6, shall we?

Big 5-game road trip... get it started right -- I wonder if those long-rumoured whispers of an "all-Staal brawl" will come to fruition? Without Crosby in the lineup, the Pens will be looking to other means to get themselves started. After winning 8 straight (!!) they've been 3-4-1 in their last 8.

Take another step, boys! The Thrashers and Caps are right at your heels, with Florida only a few points off the pace. 60 minutes of Hurricanes hockey!

Conklin - OMG, of course he remembers us, but wants to forget, lol. He's played real well though, so we need to stay in the present not the past.

Pens are hurting and have a bit of a flu bug like we experienced, so lets jump on them.

I don't want to see hub receiving texts from his nephews and their pals who are using our tickets for this one.

Forslund updated his blog today.
http://www.wral.com/sports/blogpost/2387620/

This really worries me though:
As much as the Pittsburgh sky is cloudy, the Hurricanes situation with Matt Cullen is also murky at best. Cullen, who is out with vision problems which could be a result of a concussion sustained on December 26th in New York, did not travel with the team. Heis is out on an indefinite basis. According to my information he will not travel to Nashville on Monday so this situation mat go way beyond day to day
We need a healthy Matt Cullen, but of course if he is rushed that it takes longer for him to get better in the long run. :(

It depends on your definition of "faced" - for example, if you are facing the back of the net from behind it, can you truly be facing the other team as well...'

Side note - Isn't it beautiful seeing Pronger so close and yet too far in that picture :)

Interesting comments from Forslund on EC asking about Orpik. I think Erik just needed to do that, and perhaps this is the first time he felt good enough to do it, since the whole thing happened. Orpik is still a jackass, so I'm happy Erik got it out of his system.

Great 1st period on the road. Boys have jump, Staal was flying and Sergei looks like he has played on this team all year. It's spooky.

But I have a question- what does Sergei's brother living in London have to do with Sergei sitting next to Rod in the locker room? He is making absolutely no sense. First Chicken Salad, then him mentioning Staal's wife sent a cinnamon loaf and he's asking for some, and this. Good thing Cullen text'd him and called him on the chicken salad comment. Makes me think Tripp is the one with a concussion or post concussion syndrome(?)

I really wish this talk about making a move would just stop. If JR 'could make a move' don't you think he would have by now? I mean seriously...?

It's been documented that trades are near impossible with the new CBA- as we can see the cluster of trades happening every day (said with strong sarcasm here) , and when you're not in a position of "strength" like we are; (i.e a strong contender) you're gonna be held by the balls and have to pay dearly to get what you want- so here we sit, with the people who are either going to get this done, or not. So the white knight, trade-em up theory just doesn't fly with me, because if JR does indeed do something by the deadline, it'll be in an attempt to improve the club, but he's not gonna give away the farm to do it.

The only change that can help this team is in that locker room. They are not willing to put forth the work to be a top team. They do for two, three or five games in a row, but not night in and night out. The were totally out worked in that 3rd period. Just look at our power play and the Pens. The Pens battled along the boards and were willing to go to the net. And then after the game we hear the same stuff out of the locker room about what they need to do.....bla,bla, bla. I hate to think this because I really love being a fan of this team but except for Stillman and Commie, noboby is playing for a contract. How many guys were FA during the cup run?

Are you kidding? I'd be THRILLED if they put together an effort for "three or five games in a row". No way they have that in them!

Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic. Thank God we're in the SouthLeast else coaching changes would have to be considered. The power play continues, again this year, to suck. That's coaching.

From Luke's blog:

• Sergei Samsonov was the beneficiary of some puck luck on Carolina’s goal, but that tends to happen to players who hang around the net.
Andrew Ladd was trying to get the puck back to Tim Gleason at the point but his pass hit Penguins forward Maxime Talbot — and bounced right to Samsonov in front.

• Echoes of 2006: In the second period, Andrew Ladd stole the puck from Ty Conklin behind the net, but there was no one in front to receive his pass.

Why do they rarely they have somebody AT THE NET? I can't even count the times hubby and I have screamed "Go to the net. Somebody get in front of the net." And after they center a pass to nobody because nobody's there, we scream "Nobody home." That shot chart really illustrates where the players aren't.

While a puck moving defenseman would be nice, what I'd really like to see is a "butt parked solidly in front of the net to make good things happen" anyman.

This seems to be a recurring theme. Year after year. You can't center when there's nobody home.

Yes, year after year after year. When Staal is out front, he scores. When Stillman is out front, he scores. When Ladd is out front, he scores.
Problem is, no one wants to do it more than once in a while. I've given up hoping that would change.

One game. When we need two points. I wish I could be so cavalier.

Well I suppose there are a few reactions one can have when one's team that one cheers for loses an ugly game. One could be "oh noes, gloom, doom, we are teh suxors, why us, poor us fans that our team is so sucky". Another is "we need to move on and not dwell on this and not let one sucky game throw yet another wrench in the works, when we've already got enough wrenches in there a plenty". I'm sure there are more reactions. I'd rather get on my horse and raise my sword and call for a rally than ***** and moan about how much we suck. (Not saying that you SoCal are doing that, because I don't see you doing it, but I'm not going to join the pity party that others are throwin' down.) Do I see huge gaping flaws in the team? Heck yes I do, our special teams both ways are ghastly right now, and heck yes these were two points for the taking that were pretty darned important. But at the end of the day I'd rather the boys who have to lace up their skates and put on a Hurricanes jersey put a 4-goal third period behind them than dwell on being sucky.

I wouldn't be as upset with Lavi if the power play wasn't always the same exact players, in the same positions making the same mistakes over and over. I've not seen him make one adjustment other than scratching Hamilton a few games here and there.Somebody must be paying Laviolette several million dollars to play Hamilton on the right point. That is the only explanation. It hasn't worked since October. Move him to the left side or get him off the powerplay.

It would help if all three forwards wouldn't get caught behind the net while the Dmen are back at the blueline. Someone needs to stay out front in the slot, at least, if battling it out in the crease ain't their thing. Otherwise, we'll continue to see our centering passes gobbled up by the opposition.

Sounds like this was a good game to miss. I spent all day and night at the hospital waiting for my brother's first child make his presence into the world. I had my laptop with hoping to pick it up on centerice online but twas blacked out so instead we put Chuck on. Once it got 3-1, we turned it off, but that was also because we got the news that the little guy finally decided to come out into the world. I told my brother that his son must be a Pens fan, b/c when we got the news, the Pens scored their 3rd

I didn't get to see any of the game but from Chuck it sounded like we played a really good 1st period, had our usual dreaded 2nd but some how still had the lead then just completly fell apart in the 3rd which is strange since that's usually our period. I blame it on the groundhog.

I hear ya caveman. In church today it was all I could do to focus on the message and not think about different lines Lavi could try. On to the Preds!!!

compare the shot chart from the penguins game saturday to the one from the Rags game earlier in the week.

here it is: http://scores.espn.go.com/nhl/shotchart?gameId=280129007

it's pretty obvious what needs to happen, and its been uttered countless times: GET SOMEONE IN FRONT OF THE NET!!!

I yell that at each home game until I am hoarse..and at the tv as well. Juicy rebounds come off the stick or glove and nobody home in a red sweater.

Kick some kitty booty fellas.
