Even if he's rumoured to go back to Detroit, here's a guy I wouldn't mind having at center:

http://www.tsn.ca/images/stories/20080216/trade_fedorov_36150.jpg - The Blue Jackets could be sellers if they fall out of contention for a playoff spot in the West, and Fedorov - along with Michael Peca and Adam Foote - could be given For Sale signs. The Detroit papers have already speculated the possibility of No. 91 returning to the Motor City for one last run, and the veteran centre - in the final season of a five year, $40 million contract - has already said he would be all right with that. - Detroit News/Free Press

Well, we need a center, especially if we wanna go deeeep in the playoffs. So who do you suggest?

Peca too also, maybe...

Just say no to Federov- besides, he left the game Saturday with a leg injury and didnt return- we need another injured player like we need a hole in the head.

Besides- the Federov ship has sailed and based on JR's comments in the paper, I don't think he's planning to make any big move tommorow by 3pm, unless he gets some type of deal on the cheap.

Doom & gloom for the Lightning from Spector today:

The Latest Lightning News.
Monday, 25 February 2008 08:16

As the current and incoming Tampa Bay Lightning ownership meet today to discuss the club's future, speculation is brewing on a potential trade of Brad Richards.

TAMPA TRIBUNE (http://www.tboblogs.com/index.php/sports/comments/strange-days-coming-for-bolts/): Erik Erlendsson reports on his blog the Lightning are reaching a potential crossroads in franchise history and rumors are running rampant. Things are so tense now that Erlendsson wonders if head coach John Tortorella will be behind the bench at the club's next game. He also reports of rumors incoming owner Oren Koules might slash payroll to as low as $38 million, and if Brad Richards and Dan Boyle are traded it could potentially alienate the fanbase. Erlendsson also reported that as of last night there was nothing new to report on Richards in terms of waiving his movement clause but that could change by this afternoon.

ST. PETERSBURG TIMES (http://www.sptimes.com/2008/02/25/Lightning/Lightning_brass_to_me.shtml): Eduardo A. Encina reports it's expected incoming owner Oren Koules is expected to seek significant changes to the Lightning, including the possibility of trading Richards and the future of Dan Boyle. Encina writes this situation is eerily similar to a meeting back in 1997, when another potential buyer forced then-Lightning GM Phil Esposito into making significant changes that ultimately hurt the club, only to then walk away from purchasing the team.

TSN.CA (http://www.tsn.ca/tsn_talent/columnists/bob_mckenzie/): Bob McKenzie reports the Vancouver Canucks, Dallas Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets are believed on a list of teams Richards is willing to accept a trade to. "Dallas is offering Tampa Bay a large package that includes goalie Mike Smith; Columbus is offering three roster players, Vancouver some blue-chip prospects and Philadelphia's package is headed by Jeff Carter. Whatever happens, Richards is likely to waive his no-trade and it could be the most substantial deal of deadline week" write McKenzie, who also reports the Lightning are making progress in their attempts to re-sign Dan Boyle but it's believed the incoming ownership wants him traded too.

FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM (http://www.star-telegram.com/stars/story/492897.html): Tracey Myers reports Dallas Stars co-GM Les Jackson admits having interest in Richards but denied a TSN report claiming the Stars have made an offer for him.

NEW YORK POST (http://www.nypost.com/seven/02252008/sports/rangers/still_hot_for_boyle_99191.htm): Larry Brooks reports the NY Rangers are still very interested in Boyle and not just as a rental player, claiming GM Glen Sather has sought permission to negotiate a contract with Boyle. Brooks claims the Rangers can afford to absorb a new contract for Boyle because of the large number of young Rangers currently under entry level contracts. Brooks also reports the Rangers have no interest in Toronto's Bryan McCabe, were interested in St. Louis' Barrett Jackman but found the asking price too high, and are still interested in Oilers prospect Robbie Schremp. Rangers prospect Hugh Jessiman was believed brought up in those talks but the Oilers would want something more.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: This has to be an unnerving time for Lightning fans, given the uncertainty over what incoming ownership has in store for the team. If they're going to dump Richards and Boyle, they'd damn well better ensure they've got a solid rebuilding plan and give Jay Feaster the backing and means to use it. Otherwise it'll be merely gutting this franchise for nothing of value in return, and that could push Vincent Lecavalier out the door toward the UFA market in 2009. If this rebuilding is done half-assed, the Lightning could be headed toward dark days once again, which could have serious long-term implications toward their continued existence in Tampa Bay.

True about the injury thang....k, as I think about it you are definately correct!

Peca though....good on face-offs, back-checks nicely, and is good on the defensive side of the puck, like Brindy.. but like you said, unless it's on the cheap, I don't think he's going to pull any triggers by 3pm tomorrow.

If they get rid of Richards they effectively cut their payroll down to 38...maybe more. Boyle's a UFA, but even with his current salary, he and Richards would be over 11 million in payroll.

Good deal puck_it!

So to kick things off, this little bit on NHL.com reminded me what I saw on NHLN over the last few days and last night- NHLN will broadcast the TSN feed of "TradeCentre" (it's a holiday ya'll! ) the fesitivities start at 8am EST-so if you're by a TV, you won't be getting much else done, lol:

NHL Network across North America is teaming with TSN to bring NHL fans extensive coverage of NHL Trade Deadline Day. Hockey fans in the U.S. and Canada can keep tabs on all their favorite teams and players as NHL Network simulcasts TSN’s 10-hour program, TradeCentre 08, on Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

The wall-to-wall coverage includes a team of 20 Insiders, analysts, former NHL players, coaches and general managers, reporters and correspondents providing breaking news and instant analysis of each transaction, including interviews with players, coaches and GMs.

James Duthie hosts the event coverage from the NHL on TSN studio, while Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger, along with Gord Miller, are dialed in at the ‘Trade Breaker’ desk to bring fans the most up-to-date information on NHL trades. Analysts Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury are joined by guest analyst John Ferguson and Darren Pang on the ‘Instant Analysis’ panel, where they will break down each transaction and declare the day’s winners and losers. Contributor Matthew Barnaby will also be in-studio to comment on the day’s trades. Analyst Glenn Healy (in Boston) and contributors Keith Jones (in Stamford, CT) and Ed Olczyk (in Chicago) will join the panel via satellite with additional analysis.
Milbury, a former general manager with the New York Islanders, will also team up with Ferguson, former GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, in the ‘GM’s Corner’ to provide front-office insight. Duthie will gather reaction from NHL team news conferences and conduct live interviews with players, coaches and GMs from around the league, including Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke and Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland.

NHL Network will summarize all the action from NHL Trade Deadline Day on NHL On The Fly at 9 p.m. ET and NHL On the Fly: Final at 12 midnight ET, featuring former Calgary Flames GM Craig Button with host Dan Pollard.

Ok, so I have a couple beefs- Glenn Healey - because he's Glenn Healey and he grates on me, Milbury gets cred as "GM" when his track record stinks to high heaven and JFJ gets this TSN gig after being uncermoniously dumped by the Creeps. Killer. and then of course, there's that little man Pierre- who will be totally entertaining just because.......

The funniest part is that this is basically an all day 'event' and seriously, what exactly do we expect to happen? This isn't the old days when the Rangers and Wings could buy up everyone.

Hey 59, old reliable is The Fan 590 in Toronto. Before there was XM 204, I'd always go on to www.fan590.com (http://www.fan590.com) and stream their shows. Especially during the lockout. They are owned by Rogers Sportsnet, and they too, will have a 'show'. Noon to 4pm EST. You just click listen live...... Their morning show is pretty ok, so even though they don't start until Noon you'll hear stuff about what's up- plus you get the whole Toronto flavor- people calling in, agents, ex players and junk like that.

Plus Howard Berger is an old guard Toronto insider, he'll surely show up sometime during the day.

I'll put this here in the spirit of the Trade Deadline and since it pertains to our team......... Interesting change of thought by JR:

"More of a Chance" of a deal by deadline
Sunday afternoon, Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford was taking a wait-and-see attitude toward tomorrow's 3 p.m. trade deadline. A day later, he said there was "more of a chance" a deal could happen, although he stopped short of describing himself as optimistic.
"I think there’s a chance we could make a move," Rutherford said. "It won’t be today or tonight. It would be tomorrow. Based on the conversations, there’s a chance that something could happen."
The Canes would like to add to their depth at center with Rod Brind’Amour out for the season and the Canes have looked into five or six possibilities and narrowed that search down to “a couple of players,” Rutherford said.
“I don’t want to be in a rental situation,” Rutherford said. “I’d like to be able, if we can, to make some kind of a deal that helps us now and helps us in the future. That’s what we’d prefer to do.”

And McCabe is joining the TO or Bust wagon

"I don't know how much clearer I can say this, but I want to stay here," McCabe barked at reporters. "I've said it all the time, I don't want to go anywhere. I had a conversation with my wife and our first choice is to stay [in Toronto]. However, I said if something came across [Fletcher's] table that he felt was worthwhile, I would consider it. That's all. There is no guarantee I'd accept anything. I signed to stay with the Leafs, after having a choice to go other places. And, that hasn't changed."

Or do you think he will stay where he is at?

Guyute
02-25-2008, 05:58 PM
LMAO at the sabres board quotes, thanks!!

The Recchi boat has likely sailed. If JR wasn't interested when he was on waivers, it's not likely he's going to trade for him.

I'm not going to speculate who JR may be considering, though I will say, if he's saying he's "considering" a deal, I'd bet it's pretty close to already done. JMO.

KaniacFever
02-25-2008, 06:05 PM
I don't know how things work, but I thought Atlanta can't trade Recchi since he was picked up off re-entry waivers. I thought I heard something like Atlanta has to put him on waivers or offer him to other teams who put in a claim for him first.

As for JRs new news, interesting. Sounds like he's gotten something cooking. And interesting he says he'll make a deal for the future, not just a rental player. My first guess will be Stoll.

SoCalcaniac
02-25-2008, 06:12 PM
Nope, the Thrash don't have to offer him up to anyone, he's their player free and clear; I agree with Guy- we probably won't trade for the Recchin ball- I think if we had 'room' at the time, maybe we would have, but we didn't, and now, I'm guessing he wouldn't because we seem to have something going with our current make up.

As for what JR has up his sleeve, I kinda think something has sprung up possibly from his time at the GM's meetings and maybe the price isn't as high as once was (?) so we shall see..............

SouthernHockeyChick
02-25-2008, 06:27 PM
It was said several places that if Recchi had still been available when we had our shot, JR would have taken him and Forslund spoke about him trying to work a trade with Atlanta to get Rex after they picked him up. I don't think we can say JR isn't/wasn't interested.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed the defensemen to a six-year, $40 million dollar deal.
TSN has learned that the deal will pay Boyle $6.66 million per year for six years. The deal will include a no trade clause in the first four years and a modified no trade in years five and six.

So the "core" (with Boyle replacing Richards in the Trinity, a sub-unit of the core) is still hauling down around 21 mil right? They've lost a 30 goal scorer and will lose Richards.

I swear reading Onrait's blog is BETTER than watching.

11:38 - Bob: "Columbus Blue Jackets are peddling Sergei Fedorov." Blackhawks are peddling Tuomo Ruutu. And how about this in what would possibly be the greatest news in recent Ottawa Senators history: "Nikolai Khabibulin to the Senators for Ray Emery has at least been discussed."

If you have a chance to get a Cup winning tender who used to smoke cigarettes in between periods... you do it!

11:41 - Milbury gets a call on-air and is very excited about it.

11:42 - Brad Richards is a member of the Dallas Stars. It is done. Dreger confirms the deal by yelling across the studio.

11:43 - Dreger has the details of the Stars deal that confirms my speculation that Brett Hull would eventually go Artie Lange on us: Brad Richards and Johan Homqvist to the Dallas Stars for Jeff Halpern, Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen.

11:44 - Pierre says Montreal is on the verge of doing something big and is checking his Blackberry a lot.

TSN is pissing me off now. Everytime someone starts to say something about our trade, someone else either cracks a joke or someone interrupts with some BS stat like "There have been 21 trades so far today."

Samehere. At times I've about thrown the headphones. They are pissing me off. That's ok though, let them continue to think that Brind'Amour is the only guy on the team.

EDIT: Wow, TSN reporting that Monteral says they are done and not doing anything else. Habs fans must be going crazy giving up Huet for a 2nd rd pick.

Yeah Mona, they'll just call up all their young kids from Norfolk. Plus they can play Pinhead, TLT and Boyle for 30 minutes a game....;)

Don't those three always play 30 minutes a game? They seem to..they are the only ones that matter. I hope Richards had a few FYs before he left.

The Toronto media is :deadhorse: in the Cliff Fletcher press conference. I keep hearing "no trade clause" "do you think you could have gotten a lot for Sundin" "how far back did not being able to trade Sundin set you" :deadhorse::deadhorse::deadhorse:

Good gosh Toronto is so the center of the universe. This Fletcher thing is too damn much. On and on and on it goes.

You gotta give it to the old guy- he sure did light up JFJ and the players who weren't willing to waive the NTC (Kubina apparently) and there was "NO interest" in Brian McCabe he just let it rip, lol. and then he takes a shot at Ferguson Jr for giving out all these NTC's. It's all so hilarious.

Oooh now the Canadiens are scheduled for a presser at 5:30 est. I hate that I'll miss it....

EDIT- this is hilarious- the TradeCentre "Insiders" Cox, Simmons, Dave Hodge and Michael Farber- they are wringing their hands over this 5-Leafs have decided they can live with losing- bit- Damien Cox just called it some dysfunctional Leaf Stockholm Syndrome!! OMFG.

I wish, wish, wish we could have TSN down here, this stuff is so awesome.

I look for contracts that include NTC's except for in their final year "real soon now".

Chicago's list of availables:

Per B McKenzie

ruutu!
At officially 8:26am yesterday, I was hoping we got Ruutu.

After the game last night, I'm still glad I made the call. I crapped my pants when I saw JR actually went after him. This guy has hurricane all over him with his loyalty and lockerroom qualities.

I've been following that boy since his younger days, got his rookie card. He never panned in Chicago with all the injuries, but this is his samsonov time. Last night he showed he is an NHL superstar, just needed a place to play where they didn't think he had osteogenesis imperfecta. Let him hit and he will. Let him make plays and he thinks way above the game. I hope this enthusiasm lasts for a while. Hate that we lost ladd but Ruutu was in the same place in Chicago as ladd was with the canes. Too many injuries to trust he could contribute as well. Both had Limited time due to multiple injuries, so the swap was perfect for their careers. Keep it up Ruutu!

Y'all are mean. Okay, okay, it is funny in sort of a sad way. I wasn't happy about that trade in the first place so I'm definitely not happy about it now.

Anyhow.....in other "how'd they do" news, Brad Richards had 5 assists tonight.

Well according to TSN it isn't that bad:

''It's bad news, but it's also good news because I didn't know what to expect and it's a first-degree MCL and it should be better within hopefully a week,'' he said.
Oh well.

Huet pitches a shutout with his new team, and with 3 minutes remaining Donald Brashear puts the icing of frustration on the Brodeur cake as the Caps win 4-0.

Caps are now 3 points behind us with two games in hand.

SoCalcaniac

Huet (hue-ay or HooET? enough already) played a solid game and the high and mighty Devils and Princess Marty did nothing, which is why we can't rely on anyone but ourselves to continue to keep our distance from the Caps.

We bombed it last night, tomorrow we SHOULD NOT make the same mistake; if we do, then shame on us.

and oh, for those paying attention to the other teams and what they're doing- The Caps play the woeful Leafs in TO tommorow night- now ya'll know we can't count on the Laffs to do much of anything for anyone, so again, it's up to us to do what we need to do so we don't need to worry about people who are chasing us. ;)

Thankfully, the Leafs did the job anyhow! :)

I hear they have been turning it around a bit as of late.
