Since the All-Star break we're 9-5-1. According to Brindy & Wesley's plan, we still need at least 11 more wins to make the Plxyxffs. Time to grab another W on Saturday.

Puck-drop at 7:00PM

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

NO skating in molasses, no turnovers and no injuries!! YES to skating hard, scoring on PPs and moving the puck.

And I want to somebody/anybody to put Pinhead and Shrimp on the ice!! Legally of course. :D:evil:

Speaking of skating in molasses, this is another "changeover" game, the Wolfpack is in the house at noon to play Duke. A little more lag time between games, but I'd still suspect the ice to be a little slow.

First, here's a write up I saw in the paper paper this morning about the contributions of our Rats:

Then, in Luke's blog, he elaborates:

Heres a guess by Luke on tonight's line ups. There was no pregame skate b/c of the bball game so he's basing this off of yesterday's practice.

He also mentioned that Timmay is going back this afternoon to take the baseline test again. It'll be a GTD if he or Seidenberg play tonight. Whitney is out tonight.

Well Washington won last night which means they are only 3 points back of us with 2 games in hand. That means that this hockey game against Tampa Bay is huge and I know what you're thinking, why is the game called hockey and not pucky. I mean all the other games are named for the objects used in them, basketball for the basketball, baseball for the baseball, tennis for the um tennis but not hockey. The name hockey comes from when the native aborigines were playing and one day a hawk swooped down and ate the puck, the natives then ran back to their tribe yelling hawk eat, hawk eat, and that is how we ended up with what today in the modern vernacular is known as hockey. Okay Let's go out and play some hockey.

I missed the first, but after that at least... GREAT game. True, TB was on the 2nd night of a back to back, and since they are a 3-4 man team, back to backs Really hurt them. But, we stepped up and took advantage of it. Something that HAS to be done at this time of year.

Ruutu's goal was a Beaut. Fantastic pass by Staal. And Sergei continues to be an unbelievable fit here, taking all kinds of advantage of a fresh start. Lovin all our new guys, and they were all Huge in this one.

Timmay and Hedi continue to be a good pair as the midget and pinhead were real quiet tonight. LT, not sure what that was about Hedi, but I too thought he had a real good night.

Corvo's shot is a blast. His goal was nice and the 2nd blast he let rip took the stick right out of Smith's hands. Smith was like WTF.

And sounds like Ruutu got himself a chant from the fans already.

Maybe its just me, but I still think having Corvo here is helping Kaberle. He just looks like a different guy out there.

Great game by the Team and thank you Maurice for beating the Caps in Regulation.

I was with ssangste tonight and he commented that Smith was a better goalie than Turco. And I said, "Well, let's see how long it takes till Torts throws him under the bus."

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) - John Tortorella is one win away from becoming the winningest American-born coach in NHL history. Tortorella will seek this milestone achievement on Saturday when the Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Carolina Hurricanes in a Southeast Division battle.

 I was talking with the people around me about Smith's puck playing but I think Luke say's it best:
Say this about new Lightning goalie Mike Smith: He’s entertaining.

Between his somewhat curious puck-handling and apparent difficulty anticipating bounces off the end boards, the tripping penalty he took for yanking Staal around the ankle with his goal stick and chasing down Trevor Letowski in the corner after Letowski swiped at Smith’s glove, there aren’t many dull moments.

Needless to say, that’s not exactly what John Tortorella looks for in a goalie, so their new marriage will be interesting to follow over the next few years.

Fixed that for ya boss. Twas fun to wave him buh bye as he headed across the [expletive] ice tonight.

Hockey etiquette question.....When your team is up 5-1 with less than 10 minutes left in the third period, and is just dominating, then is it okay to start the wave?

Smith really seems to think he's inherited Marty Turco's puck-playing ability. He has not. I really wanted us to make him pay for it one time.

But man, I almost have a hard time being gleeful at Tampa's misfortunes anymore. Every time I saw Dan Boyle cough up the puck or TLT whiff all I could think about was the chewing out they'd get from Torts later on.

Well, if Gleason had any remaining ill-effects you sure couldn't tell. He was sharp as hell. Still not a great game for Cullen tonight, but not bad. I'm hoping he's just adjusting to his new linemates.

Q. How can you tell when your team is in a blow-out?
A. When the fans start the wave!!

I think it's become a crowd tradition. It's certainly feels good to be relaxed and have the feeling that a win is sure to come.

It was fun to hear the crowd bellowing "Ruuuuuuuuuuuuu" after he scored. He's quickly won-over the fans.

The team chemistry is really looking good right now. I'm proud of them all.

I forgot to mention the most striking thing of the evening! I think that is the first game I have ever seen called by Hasenfratz that wasn't a complete and total debacle! I actually thought that game was called reasonably well. I guess I could sound like a homer since we obviously got the lion's share of the PPs but, I really felt like we just were not taking stupid penalties and they were. Most of what they called was really blatant stuff that just had to be called.

"When I came here, it felt like I had played here five years," said Carolina defenseman Tim Gleason (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8469476), acquired in a trade before last season. "We're all a close-knit group."

LTD- I think if we're winning handily, it's "ok" to start the friggin wave. I won't participate, but I get the glee, so I'll stick to chuckling. I did notice several of our players noticing the random wave-outbreak and wondered what they were all thinking. ;)

Y'all remember that comment by Messier during the SCF's when he said 'the biggest thing is you have to take away the will to win'? Well for me, Tampa's will to win has disappeared. TLT, Pinhead, et al, have dialed into the Steven Stampkos sweepstakes. Not to take anything away from our dudes, because they all played a hell of a game, But I don't think Tampa's even dialed in. They're done. and for all of us who love a Torts meltdown like no other, I don't think he even has a 'will' to implode. I noticed when he walked off the ice for the 2nd int. with Mike Sullivan, he was like totally blase. I think they're all over it. Lecavalier looked so disinterested, and I knew he had been 7 games without a goal - but geez, he did'nt seem at all into wanting to break that little streak, especially since he's had quite a bit of success against us. I guess when you're done you're done eh? I was wondering what happened to the Dallas Stars Mike Smith- this guy looked like he was under seige, mentally and all.

Hub and I went down to watch warm ups, specifically so I could look at My Timmay. He looked a little shaky to me at first, but then, seemed to get stronger in warm ups. Yep, call me nuts, trying to analyze what he looked like in warmups, but I had to just see him and big, big props to him, he played very well. Hedican looked miles better just with him in the line up.

I'm still wondering about the Corvo/Kaberle experiment, but I trust Laviolette maybe he sees the potential that I don't, tee hee.

So all my favorite fowards- holla! Each line looked great. I thought Coach did a great job of 'resting' our "big guys" near the end of the game and gave Letowski, Brookbank and all the guys those extra shifts. Ruutu sure didn't look outta place with Staal and Cole- the Tuomo goal was gorgeous the pass by Staal, a beaut. Quick Poll- how many people on here have called into 99.9 the Fan and asked a) what is Samsonov's contract status or B) just called in to give him by props???? it was the running theme of the night and it seems to be a theme every game. Mr. Socal was so unhappy with me throwing him under the bus before he ever played a game- as Samsonov has been a favorite of his since his Detroit Viper/IHL days, and he reminds me of it every chance he gets. I'm fine with being COMPLETELY and UTTER WRONG-O.

I thought it was wayyyy cool to see Forlund's son, Coach Laviolette's son and Cory Stillman's boy and the Midget Canes with their championship trophy during intermission and the little shootout. Youth hockey has really done well in the Triangle.

Happy Birthday 45th Birthday, Ron Francis.

JR did one of those state of the Canes interviews on ch.com, and he mentioned the atmosphere of the building and the players and the org appreciating the enthusiastic cheering for the Canes - there are moments in the building when I think we lull - and then there are moments of enthusiasm and excitement that are contagious. We'll need all that and more next Saturday gang- - the SLUGS will be in the building. Sorry to burst the party atmosphere - but we have a week to prepare.

Seems like after our second goal they just kind of jumped on the Canes bandwagon and cheered us on. Seeing TB fall on their arses makes me happy!! :nanner::yippee:

After our 4th goal, I looked at Torts to see what he was doing and he didn't even react.

I wasn't at last night's game, but the same thing happened during the Boston game. Every time Chara had the puck the "whoop-whoop" started. Somehow it seemed to totally fit, so we were doing it too, much to our kids' amusement. I think it's sort like picking a player in basketball that you want to heckle.

For Lightning, penalty calls not minor

Tampa Bay is whistled seven times, swinging the game Carolina's way.

By DAMIAN CRISTODERO
Published March 2, 2008

<HR noShade SIZE=1><!--BSHSTARTBODY--><!--top-->RALEIGH, N.C. - Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle still cannot believe he was called for a roughing penalty on Carolina's Erik Cole in the second period of Saturday night's game.

"Cole's about 240 (actually 205 pounds) and I put my hand on his face and he does a summersault, 360 (degrees) on the ice," Boyle said. "He was shocked he didn't get a (diving) call. I saw his face afterward." (really, Cole was?)

Tampa Bay's locker room was full of such stories after a 5-1 loss at the RBC Center (of course they were)

The Lightning was called for seven minor penalties in the game by referees Mike Hasenfratz and Dan Marouelli; five in a second period in which Carolina scored twice, once on the power play, to turn a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 advantage.

"It took us right out of the game," said associate coach Mike Sullivan, standing in for an agitated coach John Tortorella. "We had a real solid first period. We carried the play in the first period. The penalty situation in the second period took us right out of the game." (Torts agitated, wish I could see that )

Add that the Hurricanes only had to kill one penalty that began with 8:22 left in the third and the score 5-1, and Carolina's reputation for embellishment, and you understand the consternation for Tampa Bay (26-32-7), which lost for the sixth time in seven games. (yes, go ahead, and get it out there in print that our team dives. Maybe next time, you'll get the lead and we'll come back and kick your butt in the 3rd too. Just ask Florida how well this has worked out for them ;))

"It is frustrating," said defenseman Paul Ranger, called for tripping Keith Aucoin, who fell hard to the ice after being tapped on the leg with a stick. "I don't know how a guy can trip when you hit him on the back of the leg."
The Lightning took a 1-0 first-period lead on Jeff Halpern's second goal in three games since being acquired from the Stars, and Boyle was clear the penalties "didn't cost us the game." (well of course it didn't but your associate coach thinks it took you right out of the game. So, what gives? I mean we only scored one PP goal. What were you doing when you guys weren't in the box. Oh yeah, coughing up the puck to our guys all night long )

Being outshot 33-23, including 18-9 in the second was troublesome, as was Vinny Lecavalier's ninth straight game without a goal, his longest streak since a 10-game drought in 2002, and Marty St. Louis' sixth straight game without a point.

That Boyle was minus-4, Ranger minus-3 and Tampa Bay allowed goals to Sergei Samsonov and Tuomo Ruutu in a 1:58 span of the third period didn't help.

But as Sullivan said, "Any time you take penalties, you take players out of the game that don't kill, and the players that do kill expend a whole lot of energy trying to defend. We use our top players when we kill and I think it takes its toll."

Consider this second-period stretch:
Defenseman Shane O'Brien was called for hooking 7:34 into the second period. Goaltender Mike Smith was called for tripping Eric Staal with 9:22 left, a call he argued. Ranger was penalized with 6:14 left, Boyle with 4:28 left.

The Lightning entered the game with 301 minor penalties, tied for the league's second fewest.

"We believed we have a disciplined hockey team as far as stick infractions and understanding what the rules are and how to play," Sullivan said.
Boyle said he pleaded with the officials to watch the scoreboard replay of his penalty.

"The call is made. You can't do anything about that," he said. "But at least you want them to learn. (who? the refs? whatever dude) They wanted no part of it."

Awww, I feel so bad....no not really

The Tampa Trib says much the same...

- Lightning players were befuddled at a series of questionable penalty calls against them, leaving them fatigued trying to kill off six successive penalties - five in the second period (awww, they got tired )
- What turned out to be particularly maddening to Tampa Bay was the nature of the calls.

Last season the Florida Panthers accused the Hurricanes of embellishing plays with the intent to draw a penalty, with Florida coach Jacques Martin stating after one game, "I guess we have to teach our guys to dive." The comments were brought up again by the Panthers earlier this season, and the end result was a pair of diving calls on the Hurricanes in the third period.

Saturday, while the Lightning didn't come right out and call the Hurricanes a team of divers, certain players were questioning the ease in which players happen to be falling against a Tampa Bay team that has been called for the second-fewest minor penalties in the league. (again with the diving)

^^ Well now I understand why we couldn't figure out where it was coming from, I kept looking in 113-114 but it was coming from above there. I think the "whoop whoop" cheer actually started from Caps fans and there's a story behind it, when folks do it here I think it has to do with the other team's shutdown defenseman which is why Boyle was the target last night and Chara when we played the Bruins. I'll see what I can dig up.

Question, anyone else notice that Staal wasn't wearing an 'A' last night? I saw one on Hedican but just assumed he had picked it up since Ray was out of the line-up. I thought Staaly had a permanent 'A' now since the Captain is out???

We sit in 314, and I'd put it right around 316. Maybe 317. It is a tad annoying, but yeah, whatever gets you into it I guess.

Washington fans do that "whoop" sound to (some/many/most?) ex-Capitals when they come back to play against them.... it's a tradition there (I believe I heard that in 00-01 when we had Kevin Hatcher).

this whole diving garbage infuriates me. Thanks to the Panthers, who simply arent good enough to beat the Canes on a regular basis, for starting it, but come on, the lightning too? I will be the first to admit that guys like Cole and LaRose (just examples, not meaning to single them out) do tend to go down a bit too easy on some nights, but it seems every time the Canes outwork a team lately, which they clearly did last night, and end up drawing penalties, the other team has to whine like a bunch of babies.

Question: What's with the "whoop-whoop" kind of sound some people were making whenever Boyle touched the puck? What was that for and what does it mean? Anybody know?

Back when we played Edmonton, the Oiler fans would do the "whoop-whoop" whenever Souray touched the puck. I asked an Oiler fan why they do that and he told me it goes back to the cold war (i believe) and they would set off the air raid sirens and the kids would have to get under their desks. Well Souray has a pretty big shot so they are setting off the air raid sirens to hit the deck.

But Ever since then, I've noticed a group of Canes fans have taken over and do it whenever the 'big' defenseman from the other team has the puck, Chara, Bouwmeester, Boyle, etc.

I thought it was cool when Oiler fans did it, but its just stupid now and gets on my nerves.

For what its worth, I've always thought Cole goes down easy period- checked, touched with a stick or just flat out skating alone. I think its a function of how he skates- full tilt down the ice with his center of gravity slightly askew. LaRose too to some extent. I think its a trade off you have when you throw everything into forward movement. Of course it may make it a little easier to embellish but I dont think thats often the case. Cole falls alot period. He doesnt need a lot of help.

^ I agree, guin.

I was surprised there wasn't a diving call on Cole for that Boyle roughing (whether he dove or not...we are talking about Hasenfratz) but, Boyle did commit a completely blatant penalty. I guess their coach's tendency to blame after a loss is rubbing off on his players.

For Lightning, penalty calls not minor

Tampa Bay is whistled seven times, swinging the game Carolina's way.

Yea this looks completely legal.

 That would be bad. It's a chair, it's a cooler, it's a Linda Craft chooler, now do the wave.

I have no problem with the wave during a commercial break but doing it during play annoys me.

You know... sometimes, I get to the point where I decide it's not worth fighting something anymore. I've come to that conclusion regarding the wave. I decided last night to stop fighting it, and just be amused by it. It only blocks your view for a split-second-- not worth letting it effect my blood pressure.

Lately it happens with the crowd is really relaxed, because we're clearly going to win the game. It's become... like... I don't know... our version of singing, "nah, nah, nah, naaaah... nah, nah, nah, naaaaaah... hey, hey, heeeey.... gooo-od-bye"

I've noticed the "whoop-whoop" thing with certain defenders. Chara was one. I've seen what's-his-name on FL get it recently too (name escapes me, and don't have time to look it up). There's been several. No idea where it came from or how it started. It's been going on awhile now, just some games it's a little bigger than others. And it Only seems to be defensemen.

That makes sense...you have a lot more time to get a good whoop-whoop going when the defenseman is skating the puck up the ice. Forwards would be (hopefully) passing the puck a little quicker.

Ok, we all know that EC does fall down a lot, however Boyle's penalty was directly in front of me and he basically wrapped his free hand around his head and spun EC to the ground. For him to say that he could not believe he was called shows that he was completely and utterly clueless about the game last night.

Other random thoughts:

1. Didn't curse Chaps My A**(Hasenfratz) one time last night....that was good.

2. In the pic that is Marouelli in the background who made the call on Boyle.

3. The Staal Cole Ruutu line looked very cohesive out there.

4. The whoop-whoop is kinda aggravating

5. Sergei has got to be the best re-entry waiver pickup in history.

6. The two hits in the first, Conboy and then Brookbank woke this team up and really energized them for the rest of the game.

Well now; It appears the ol' Tampa Bay Lightning has decided to copy it's fellow Floridians in this diving business, in order to set stuff up for the next time we play them (3/29) in their barn. Oh that will be fun eh?

So Peter better start prepping his guys now because it's pretty much a given that we'll get the whistle for a dive.

It also appears that the Tampa players have taken to whining like their coach. it's all so very pathetic. They should be happy that they are serious contenders for Steve Stampkos in June and go with it. When they flashed up the Happy 45th Birthday Ron Francis tribute on the j-tron, I turned to hub and reminded him that 5 years ago to the day, we were in Toronto for a long weekend up to watch the Canes v Leafs, and staying at the team hotel in TO, where we got to wish him happy birthday on his birthday while eating breakfast in the hotel restaurant and that was the year, we couldn't win a game to save our lives, had a bazillion injured players, and couldn't even end up with the 1st pick overall, but we still won Eric Staal with the 2nd pick that June. So the moral of the story for Tampa is, 5 years from now, maybe their fans can look back at this time in the same manner- 5 years ago, we were brutal; our team was brutal. Since then, things have changed dramatically. Maybe that can happen for them too...................... or maybe not.;)

Whats so funny about Boyle not understanding how they called that and not a Dive. I watched the replay over and over and he intentionally dropped his glove to grab a hold of Cole.

However I take a lot of these complaints as compliments, because if they are crying about diving, running goalies and other crap it generally means we are winning and annoying the other teams players and fans, which is fine with me.

I always go back to what Lavi said many times about the "06" Canes. They were an honest group. When they were not playing well they owned up to it, no excuses. The Lightning are not being very honest. They mailed it in after the first period. The Canes put their foot on their throat and never let up. The Lightning put up no fight. After it got 5-1, I warned my little girl that there may be some fights ( she gets worried someone is going to get hurt), but there was not so much as a crosscheck. That is why they are # 15 in the east.

I thought the same thing exactly. Cole felt his hand on his head and probably spun into it to keep from injury. I can only imagine the fear that strikes after all he's been through when he feels danger.

Secondly, I read in a previous post, I think from Puck_It that there was a Ruutu chant saying "Franken Ruutu." I don't like that chant. I hope it doesn't catch on. I think there could be any number of Ruutu chants that would be awesome. His scars may be there forever, and no one wants to think of themselves as a monster. I don't know. He's a very happy go lucky dude it seems. It may never bother him in the least, even if the whole arena chants it and teamates started saying it. I will never take part in that chant though. Scars can do weird things to a persons self image over time and what seems innocent and all in fun to outsiders can be harmful to the person with the scar.

Today's News & Observer has Tampa Bay whinning about all the calls going the Cane's way...they should control their frustration other ways than attacking opponents. St Louis and Lecavalier have a huge dry spell and I'm sure the whole team is feeling it and they are making stupid mistakes on the ice and trying blame their opponents. When it rains it pours!

I agree.. at it seems like our team can be pretty effective taking their anger and turning a game around. Brindy is the poster child for this. I have seen him get angry in a game and you could see that he was going to score or die trying.. just ask Montreal and a few other teams from 2006! :D

He's a hockey player... Scars are like badges of honor. Plus chicks dig scars.

BTW, i do know what you mean, I have some rather disfiguring scars on my right hand from an accident with a table saw. I was self concious about it for a while, but most people that know me probably dont even notice them or realized they were there. I'm sure they've got doctors who are world class and minimized the scarring that might occur.

Question, anyone else notice that Staal wasn't wearing an 'A' last night? I saw one on Hedican but just assumed he had picked it up since Ray was out of the line-up. I thought Staaly had a permanent 'A' now since the Captain is out???

Answering my own question. Not sure if anyone else saw this or wondered about the missing 'A', it was a wardrobe malfunction.

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/index.php/canes?title=the_staal_jersey_mystery&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

For those who were curious, the reason Eric Staal wasn't wearing an 'A' on Saturday was because of, in the parlance of the time, a "wardrobe malfunction."

Staal was given a new jersey to wear Saturday, one that hadn't yet had the letter sewn on, and no one noticed when it was hung in his locker.

This didn't really get much attention from the media because Staal was still listed as one of the Canes' three alternate captains on the official lineup handed out before the game. But fans in the stands don't get that, so it was easy to wonder what was going on.

The answer? Nothing.
