Dan Patrick is reporting this on his show, and I can see it from the main page on ESPN.com, but I'm on a VPN connection and can't find a direct link.
I love this guy, I think he represents what is great about sports, bringing an obvious sheer joy and enthusiasm for the game every minute on the field.
ETA: VPN blocks me from ESPN but not Fox Sports:

Hmmmmmmm.......tried to put a (?) in my title but it didn't work. The report titles are pretty emphatic but when you drill into the articles it certainly leaves the door open for a change of heart.

I have seen reports that he was going to and then he changed his mind. I wonder if he done? I know the Packer fans hope he won't. I have always liked him as a player and a person.

If management gets him a top tier receiver (he wants Moss), he'd stay.

I dunno if they'd sign him...especially since the most memorable thing about Moss to Packers fans is this:

Yeah, I'd say it's official now (or is it?):
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3276034
Green Bay Packers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=gnb) quarterback Brett Favre (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=1025) has decided to retire.
"I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre told ESPN's Chris Mortensen in a voice mail messasge.
"If I felt like coming back -- and Deanna [Favre, his wife] and I talked about this -- the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl. To go to the Super Bowl and lose, would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful," Favre said in the message.
"I know it shouldn't feel unsuccessful, but the only way to come back and make that be the right decision would be to come back and win a Super Bowl and honestly the odds of that, they're tough. Those are big shoes for me to fill, and I guess it was a challenge I wasn't up for. "
Guy, this alludes to what you were saying:
Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4262) when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers.
Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

Well, let me say first and foremost that as a Packers fan, and one that bleeds Green & Gold, this is truly a sad day in Titletown.
However, if what Mortensen said is true, Brett was getting a little too big for his britches. He does not run that team, Ted Thompson does. There are plenty of receivers on our team and Favre saying that they're not good enough for him to come back is stupid. Moss would not be welcome in Green Bay...ever. He's not the kind of guy that belongs in Green & Gold.
So, while I'm sad to see Brett go, I'm excited to see what Aaron Rodgers can bring to the team.

But Najeh Davenport actually DID do that (in a laundry basket in a woman's closet) ... and he played for the Pack.
I kid ... I kid.

I do have to say that his last play was my favorite one of his, ever. An interception in OT, that led to the Giants beating the patriots asses in the superbowl :D
In all seriousness, he's been fun to watch. A hell of a quarterback, who still had it in him. It wont be the same without Fav-ree

Nothing but respect for a guy who regularly torched my Lions (but who hasn't? :) ) twice a year for what seems like forever.
Neverminding the last game, good for him that he gets to go out on the relative high of a great season for the Pack rather than the last couple awful seasons when he very well could have hung 'em up on a bad note.
If Rod Brind'Amour were a football player, he'd be Brett Favre.

That's funny...I've compared the two a few times. Such as Brindy having "Brett Favre" syndrome where he thinks that he has to do it all 'cuz nobody else is, and then effs up instead.

I agree, Aaryn. I've long been ready for Fay-vree to go away and stay away.

My eyes were not fully un-glued when I first posted this morning, so I missed what that link really means. (I've just been tired of the drama and didn't realize what had happened overnight.)
I'm especially disappointed about what this means for the One True Love of my life, Chad Pennington.
Stupid Fay-vree.

Ugh. Thanks for reviving this post and reminding me of all the positive things I said about him in March, which i think I now need to take back. What a difference a couple of months make. I went from having a healthy admiration of the man to wanting him to go away. Very far(ve) away. Between this announcement and the Olympics beginning, I hope this is now off the sports pages for awhile.

Have I ever shared my Favre joke I heard on the radio? And this was a couple years ago. Not really a joke in the classic sense, just 2 talking heads crackin' on each other.
I was listening to sports radio.... could have been local.... could have been XM (but it might pre-date that). Can't remember the station, or the name of the guys. I'll call them Guy #1 and Guy #2. It went something like this:
Guy #1: Speaking of girlfriends vs. wives..... When are you ever going to get around to getting married?
Guy #2: No plans, man! No plans! I told my girlfriend she's the Dan Marino of girl friends.
Guy #1: How so?
Guy #2: 'Cause she's NEVER gettin' a ring!! (they laugh)
Guy #1: Well that's nothing! My wife's the Brett Favre of wives.
Guy #2: Oh, really? Why's that?
Guy #1: Cause ever since she got the ring, she hasn't done squat, and I can't get her to leave!

Jets Release QB Chad Pennington

The New York Jets have released quarterback Chad Pennington. The announcement was made by Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
I appreciate everything Chad Pennington has given to the Jets organization, Jets chairman and CEO Woody Johnson said. He was a part of my first draft as an owner in 2000 and has exemplified nothing but class both on and off the field. I wish him, Robin, Luke and Cole my very best.
I have all the respect in the world for Chad as a person and a player, said Tannenbaum. We have accomplished a lot of great things with Chad, including winning playoff games, which is very hard to do. He gave his heart and soul to this organization for a long, long time. I really appreciate everything he has done.
Pennington (6'3", 225), the 18th overall selection in the 2000 NFL Draft, finished his eight-year Jets career with a regular-season record as a starting QB of 32-29. He ranks first all-time in NFL history in completion percentage (65.6 percent, 1,259-of-1,919).
In franchise history, Pennington is first in all-time completion percentage and passer rating (88.9) and fourth in career passing yards (13,738), touchdowns (82), attempts and completions. He led the Jets to the postseason three times, in 2002, 2004 and 2006, winning two playoff games.

I heard on 99.9 that Miami had contacted Pennington regarding a job.

I've loved Chad since about October '95, when I was a sophomore and he was a freshman at MU. (We were both journalism majors, so I'd see him frequently in the hallway.) Where he goes, I go.
The Jets are dead to me.
