Whew! So, we got past that Atlanta away game with a nice, decisive win. And... we're now 11-5-1 since the All-Star break, kids! :D

Minnesota is a really good team. This game will be a test. I'd love to see Ray back in the line-up, but..... if he's not ready until Sat. night, I'm thinking we'll be O.K. What do y'all think?

Giveaway alert: The first 15,000 fans in attendance will receive a Ray Whitney magnet card

It's also Scouts, Y-Guides, and Indian princess night, which means some special discounts are available.

Puck-drop at 7:00PM

LET'S GO 'CANES!!

Whoo Hoo Game Day and its gonna be a Wild night.

Play tough, play physical, and get the 2 points.

Anyone know if Sean Hill is playing?

Steroid Sean should be, he's #6

as well as the always pleasant Chris Simon, #11.

And honestly? I really want us to win tonight because it would shut up this one super-obnoxious and uber-stupid Wild fan that I know (and his equally obnoxious and stupid wife). That would be great. Seriously.

Since it was already written in the N&O, you can't blame me for the jinx, but looks like Cam has a challenge tonight:

The Wild has never scored in two games at the RBC Center, losing 2-0 in January 2002 (Arturs Irbe) and 1-0 in March 2003 (Kevin Weekes).

But since we like to give players their first goal of the season, guess the Wild will break that streak when Hill gets his first:

A two-time 13-goal scorer with the Canes, he has yet to score this season in 25 games

Hope the guys got some rest last night and head home for a nap after pre-game skate. I hate back to backs..it wears me out. :D

All they have to do for motivation is to look at the standings, and feel the hot breath of Ovechkin on each of their necks as well as the rest of the Crapitals..:mad:

Well Washington keeps winning which means the Canes need to keep winning. This is a very important and very rare hockey game from a team out west and I know what you're thinking why is the game called hockey and not pucky. I mean all the other games are named for the objects used in them, basketball for the basketball, baseball for the baseball, tennis for the um tennis but not hockey. The name hockey comes from when the native aborigines were playing and one day a hawk swooped down and ate the puck, the natives then ran back to their tribe yelling hawk eat, hawk eat, and that is how we ended up with what today in the modern vernacular is known as hockey. Okay Let's go out and play some hockey.

This is the second half of a back-to-back. The Wild are a very good team in the West and the Canes will have to play their best. That being said, we have all the weapons needed to beat the Wild. Let's win this cleanly with no injuries boys.

Luke's blog update:

and Mark Parrish is in the doghouse.

Dude. How in the sam heck is Mark Parrish in Lemaire's doghouse? The native son to the State of Hockey, in the State of Hockey? I'm sure the fans aren't into that at all. All I have to say is Lemaire is a tough dude. Seriously. I clicked on the link to Mike Russo's column from the Minn-Star Tribune to get the dirt, and it sounds 'intersting' to me.

I enjoy the Wild alot, love, love, love watching their games (as dry as they can be at times, cause it is Lemaire's Wild we're talkin' about here) only because their building is just such a fun atmosphere- the fans are into it and I love watching Gaborik. His comments where he wonders what it would be like numbers wise for him if he played in the East? I wonder that all the daggone time. He's a talent and he's pretty exciting in his own right, and basically too scary for words when he's coming in one on one, so Gleason/Hedican- you know your assignment. ;)

Should be a fun night in the building a western conf. team and all that; and we get a Ray Whitney magnet..... be loud ya'll, like Coach and Tripp said at the STHer party- the boys feed off the energy of our crowd!

Kam/Cam mojo will be going on, so let's cross our fingers...Kam hasn't been to a game in, well, forever - so she's super thrilled to get to see "her" goalie.

Defense needs to hold their positions and stay on their man...help Cam with those rebounds, guys!!

There are two keys to winning tonight's game:

1. Score the first goal of the game
2. Score the second goal of the game

It's good to see the Wild again. I seem to remember the last game against them being in 2003 with a real tight checking game being won by Ryan Bayda in the third period. I'm hoping the Canes play a bit more physical than last night though. I thought that was the only thing missing from last night's game.

We need 100% giving 110%, 100 of the time. If we have only 75% giving 110%, 25% of the time, well we will lose 50% of the games...So everyone give 110%, 100% of the time...Now...let's go play hockey!

Was just reading Michael Russo's Star-Tribune Blog- and he updated it from the Wild's morning skate; interesting tid-bit coming from the Wild:

Jacques Lemaire was awfully chipper this morning. Of course, he always smiles and laughs in the morning. It’s after games where he doesn’t.

Wild players were going on and on about how great the ice is here in Raleigh. Maybe that’s why the Canes are such a great skating team.

KaniacFever
03-06-2008, 02:07 PM
Hedberg's take on that crazy play:

"The referee forced me to play it," Hedberg said. "He said he would give me a penalty for the defenseman kicking it back to me. We were so tired, we just wanted to change. I didn't know what to do. Maybe, I should have held onto it and taken the penalty." -Hedberg on the questionable call by the ref that cost them a goal

A player can shove the puck under the goalie, but if they have possession, can't exactly pass it back to the goalie for a stoppage or in this case, kick it to the goalie?

Caniac4life

I was hoping we would get at least two points between Atlanta and Minnesota. Anything more I consider gravy as the Wild scare me (as do most good western conference teams do that we rarely see). Anything we get tonight will probably be hard earned as the Wild play defense first and defense second. Gaborik skates like a mad man if given an ounce of room. Got to keep an eye on him. We definitely need to score first.

Go Canes!!!

Scary moment with Staal getting boarded but good to see the team immediately respond by swarming the guy with a flurry of very angry teammates. Staal seems ok too which is reassuring. I think my heart stopped though when I saw it. All I could think is that it was Cole all over again.

And yes, Hedi is at a friend's funeral. Our prayers to those families involved.

Great win. I can't remember the last time we won both games of a back-to-back. With Walker and Cole out at the end of the game, the team continues to show its depth. I finally got to see the new guys play (yay for breaks!). I know we say it all the time, but Rutherford is amazing for seeing potential in these guys. Now bring on Buffalo! What an awesome game. The crowd pretty lively throughout and I was definitely getting nervous there in the arena towards the end. But Cam made a couple great saves and he had to late. We really just about ran Minnesota out of the building early on. Great start to the game. I'm scared about Brookbank, I wonder how he is doing. And how chicken was it for them to go after Staal after Brookbank was out... Forslund commented on that during his post-game radio interview. It was amazing to see Cole and everybody else stick up for Staal like that.

What a great, great, win and one that we absolutely ahd to have.

Saturday is HUGE. I will only worry about what we can control, which is us winning, but wouldn't it be amazing if we were to win and Washington lose... 7 points up then.

I was sitting next to a family of Ruutu supporters. They were on the jumbotron from a previous game holding a sign that said something like "Ruutu, takes a licking and keeps on ticking!". I don't know if that is anyone on here...but cool sign.

Folgers, John and Tripp commented on the same thing during the game, funny how that hit happened shortly after Brookbank left.

And Lavi said in the post-game that he did a quick check in on Brookbank and he said Brookbank said he was "okay". Who knows though.

As far as the crowd was concerned, I was in my car with Chuck for part of the game, and at home for the rest, and y'all were loud the whole game. Every chant came through loud and clear (heard some Ruuuuuuutus, heard the goalie chants, even heard a little na-na-hey-hey-goodbye at the end, and you could barely hear John and Tripp over the ref you suck chants after the melee).

That was a wild game.

My heat sunk when that ass Voras hit Staal. That was just dirty. Like Forslund said on the post game, Voras had all the time to let up as he hit Staal once, then went in for the 2nd hit. He had every intention on injuring him and how the hell he got to stay in the game and come back and play when Cole and Walker got thrown out is unbelieveable. I was livid. Thank God Staal is ok. And way to go to Cole and the guys who all dropped their gloves. I think every guy wearing red that was on the ice didn't have their gloves on. Nice how they take our tough guy out by hitting his knee, then go after our Star player.

OK, done my rant now. One hell of a game. I'm so proud of the boys tonight. They get the day off tomorrow and its a well deserved day off. Best game of the season by them IMHO.

I'd have to re-run the DVR to be certain, but I think they were booing the fact that Voros didn't get booted.

I disagree. This is the 2nd time in a week that some mouth breathing knuckle dragger has run our guy into the boards, gotten a 5 minute major and no game misconduct.

Did Walker come off the bench to jump ugly with Carney? At the end, there were 5 Canes on the ice and Staal wasn't one of them. Whoever came off the bench is gone for 10 games, no questions asked.

Andy, according to the p-b-p Walker was on the ice before the hit. Cole was not.

Ok, I made it known that MIN is a known favorite team of mine; and I know they play in the big bad west- but there was some serious crap that went down tonight. Voros better have his ass in a sling and suspended. My heart sank when he hit Staal. I agree w/Forslund that they did seem to have a bunch of courage after Carney took out Brookbank.

Bravo Erik Cole- He went right at Voros with zero hesitation and stuck up for his boy Eric, and Scott Walker continues to be the badass that he is.

This was easily the best game they've played all year. Against a team from the vaunted western conf. and a division leader at that.

I thought Seidenberg showed stones for jumping in- and poor Bret, I was so fixated on this 'personal' thing and then heard JF on the post-game on the way home saying his very good friend had passed away. I thought my Timmay was a little lost out there a couple times tonight, but gutted through it.

For a team that played the night before and the Wild just resting and waiting here in Raleigh, it was a tale of two different teams- We could have ended that first period with 5 goals- Harding kept them in it.

I am in love with the Corvo/Cullen tandem on the point of the PP. That movement is amazing- Corvo's presence is unbelieveable.

and what was up with the bazillion scoring changes? Corvo- then Cullen, Cullen then Cole. Eeek.

Congrats to Czechit for winning the Chevy Shootout - that dude that she competeted against looked very Tampa like- no jump- sorry if you post here dude, but you got beat by a girl.

I liked the energy in the bldg too; the chants and singing and jump seemed to really rev the Canes up too.

I'm about over the 'refereeing' - it is so embarassing; and puck_it don't you dare say anything- nobody wants to hear if they got one thing out of 50 right. ;)

Nice tribute to Ruuty on the j-tron in the Forslund focus. We know how to get rowdy in our building. Even when all hell breaks loose and they're trying to sort out penalties.

Controlling our own destiny. Love it. Like I've been saying ya'll, don't worry about those other teams. We need to worry about ourselves.

Luke is funny and bang on:

Even mild-mannered Sergei Samsonov was provoked to violence in the final minute when, tired of being slashed by Nick Schultz, he cold-cocked Schultz in the face, perhaps his first NHL punch. (yeah, when you're constantly being popped- you get sick of it)

The question now is whether Voros will be suspended. If this happened in Toronto or Ottawa, the answer would probably be yes. (Conspiracy theorists unite!) ROTFLMAO

On the other hand, Staal is a pillar of the league’s marketing campaign and if they’re serious about protecting stars from dangerous hits by marginal players, this would be an example of the nth degree. (they better)

It cracks me up that the Wild had it in their heads that Brooks is the only Cane who'd stand up for a teammate, especially when our All-Star cover boy has been done wrong. They knew about Brooks, but not Walker? How is that possible? I thought Cole was going to lose his mind -- and is this the first time we've seen him really go at it like that in forever? Since he was hurt, it's usually been other players standing up for him, so I really liked the "oh no you di'n't!" justice of him not even hesitating to throw down for Staal.

I'm with John & Tripp about how this was a true TEAM win. Big effort, all lines contributing, Cole sticking up for Staal, no one cheap shot-ing a Wild player, finishing the checks, etc.

From a player's standpoint, I was chomping at the bit to do what Cole did and was even prouder that no one stooped to the level of some other teams and go after Gaborik or Demitra. The purpose of the game was to come away with 2 points, and they did.

Sure, this was character building, and can be used as a catalyst for the remaining games, but I feel this is a testament to the "Whatever It Takes" method/attitude/system that lead us to a big silver thing in 2006. Just my 2˘.

Kemel, from our seats straight across from Erik in 121, I saw that look on his face and it scare the he-ll outta me.

The Wild were completely, and I mean COMPLETELY unprepared for what we can and did do. We came with speed, we came hard, and we were gutsy. They didn't expect it, Lemaire with all the Stanley Cup rings and experience didn't prep his team and it's that simple.

Here's another howler on my other Tim- Conboy that is- and it's so dang true- I can't stop laughing- that is until I just looked at the TV and they just showed the Voros hit on Staal

Conboy/Brookbank stuff:

When the Canes called up Wade Brookbank after the Rangers debacle on Dec. 26, they added a deterrent to their bench — an NHL-caliber heavyweight.
That was intended to make any would-be miscreants think twice, and it worked.
Tim Conboy has brought a different dimension to the lineup, one the Canes really haven’t had.
Brookbank prevents mayhem. Conboy causes it.
Watching him shake off the officials to go after Todd Fedoruk after Sean Hill’s elbow on Brookbank, the only thing you could say is that he is, and I mean this in the most complimentary sense, nuts. Sean Avery, Steve Ott, Jarkko Ruutu nuts — guys like that.

That about sums up my feelings for the kid.

Whoever came off the bench is gone for 10 games, no questions asked.

i suppose i get and support the non-game misconduct...

and yeah, i was wondering about who came off the bench as well...

ok there is one more funny from Luke that a friend just IM'd me howling like crazy. I hadn't heard this story so I'm glad he relayed it again- cause I can see Peter's face in my mind when it transpired (and I too wonder about Lemaire's methods):

I know Jacques Lemaire will always put defense ahead of everything else, including perhaps his pets and family, but not pulling the goalie with the Wild on a power play with 3:12 to go, and then not pulling Harding because the Canes were on a power play for the last 54 seconds?

(Not to mention putting a checking line out on that power play and leaving Marian Gaborik on the bench.) (MG must be in the ol doghouse)

Seriously, is he trying to win?

I remember one time in Toronto in the spring of 2006 after a one-goal loss to the Leafs, someone “asked” Laviolette, “pretty aggressive there, pulling the goalie in the last minute.”

The look on Laviolette’s baffled face was so clear it might as well have been written in crayon: “I thought you people up here were supposed to know something about hockey.”:laugh:

He managed to stammer out something like, “Well, we’re trying to win a hockey game.”

Wonder what Lemaire would have said Thursday.

I can't remember the last time we won both games of a back-to-back.

Whenever it was...... it wasn't this season, 'cause this was the 1st time all year! Finally! :D

The Wild were completely, and I mean COMPLETELY unprepared for what we can and did do. We came with speed, we came hard, and we were gutsy. They didn't expect it, Lemaire with all the Stanley Cup rings and experience didn't prep his team and it's that simple.

And I felt unprepared for seeing how unprepared they were. The 1st period sure looked like they hadn't done a lick of research or watched any tape on us.

And Harding just looked really wimpy to me. Really limp stick-work, and not much aggression. I was just... well... surprised.

At any rate.... I was sure happy to see our guys stick up for each other and grit-out a win and grab 2 more points.

We had a few Y-guides and Indian princesses to our left and behind us, and they sure had a good time getting our section chanting and hi-5ing after goals. I'm glad they got to see a hard-fought win.

Woooooo! Nanner gets to dance!!! :nanner:

Ok, so, i watched the clip on abc11.com and gathered that Walker was hopping off the ice, and Cole was hoping on (Cully and Staal were already on the ice). Cole started the fight, Walker was stepping through the gate, one foot on the bench, then turned around to get involved... dont know if his second skate was in the bench or not (caught this in the upper corner during the replay).

So, really...Cole could get caught under rule 70.2, and Walker under 70.3. If one gets it, i doubt the other will... Cole would be unlikely to get penalized further, Walker it's definately possible. If Walker stayed completely on the ice, I'd say it's the other way around.

though, after watching it again, I'm not expecting supplemental discipline.

Okay, bizarre question here, but one of my friends said that John & Tripp were wondering what 328 was chanting about Ruutu. Did they actually mention it (this game or any other since his first one)?

The chant is "Frank-en-Ruu-tu," btw.

The guys on NHL Network last night mentioned something about Cole getting additional penalty time because he still had his visor on. WTF??? Is there actually a rule stating that if you fight, you have to take off your helmet if it has a visor?

I guess he could have just taken off his visor and left the helmet... "Hey Wally, get me a screwdriver so I can get this visor off... I need to go kick that guy's a$$."

When he scored his first goal a few games ago, the crowd did the typical "Ruuuuuu" cheer. The only discussion was Tripp commenting that the crowd had already embraced him with his own cheer and then said something like "I'm not sure if they are saying Tuuuuomo or Ruuuutu" and John said it was his job to figure it out.

It was not in reference to the "Frank-en-Ruu-tu" (which hopefully is only being chanted by about 10 people) or 328. Egos can return to normal size. ;)

I am so proud of our guys.. to claw and scrap and do whatever has to be done for us to win. Back in December, I never would have thought we would be in the driver's seat for the Division title. :D I think this year's motto should be "Whatever It Takes AGAIN" because with all the injuries, losses and other factors, they sure are doing WIT for sure. :spin: I told Amanda and Sheetal towards the end of the game "these mofos are going to cost me a lot of money". I love their heart.

On to the Wild.. what a bunch of thugs... I can't stand a cheap shot but when the shot involves Staal, my "mama tiger" instincts kick in. Eric is a good player but also has values and never does anything close to dirty... I knew it was on when they tried to hurt him.. I sure was thankful that he was ok. I didn't even watch all the melee on the ice for looking at Eric on the bench and praying that he was alright.

I just hope the anger and will to win spills over into tomorrow's game..and for Colesy, I think that is a given. :D

Oh and my congrats to Sheetal as well for winning the shootout to qualify for a chance to win a car. :)

Forslund touched on that in the post game. Said the Wild were just shocked and were not prepared for the type of game the Canes were ready to play. He said Lavi did a great job getting a game plan together and the guys did a great job executing it. I'd say Lavi definetly outcoached Lemaire on this one. Lavi had his guys prepared from the start to the final buzzer.

And I gotta give props to the PKers, they did fantastic tonight.

Forslund said this morning that the guys were pointing to this game for a while, against a legit playoff team in a conference we've played poorly against. It also helped that they really didn't have to work that hard in ATL on Wednesday.

On the Wild message board that I referenced earlier, there is a thread looking for Lemaire's head. They are a restless bunch in Minnesota...

True.. I started to say something about the ref probably being afraid to be that close to Colesy.

I do have to make one comment about one player for the Wild. Don't know who it was but he immediately bent over their bench trying to help Eric. I thought that was a classy move.

that guy obviously had never shot a puck before. i'm not sure what kind of wrist action thing he was trying to do... but it sure was fugly. he didn't stand a chance.

I had some trade-in tickets from not being able to make a game earlier in the year and forced the issue of getting out of the office in time to be in attendance... very good game... moreso than a lot of games I've seen this year, this had some intensity and the crowd seemed to be on the edge of their seat and into it.

I'm trying to understand why a chant is named "Franken-Ruutu" personally cause I think it's kinda horrible too- and really what sense does it make? Oh, and I'll howl loudly if I see you throwing a shoe at someone chanting it.

I'm sure John and Tripp didn't hear Franken-Ruutu, cause it was pretty clear to me the majority was chanting Ruutu.

E- LOL on the big ego comment!

I loved how people did the normal Ruuutuuu chant after the Forslund Focus and kinda during it- was neat to hear.

On the day after, I'm even more proud of what they did. Hyena great pictures you dug up there- I noticed EC losing his mind as they were trying to kick him off the ice, and I just kept closing my eyes cause I thought he'd cuss the refs out. Then I saw a clip on On the Fly this morning and when he slammed his stick on the ice, I said to myself, ooh- I missed that fit!

So it's 2pm EST and we've not heard anything about a Voros suspension. Oh the shocker..... :roll

No Suspensions:
No suspensions

No word yet from the NHL whether any supplementary discipline will be handed down after Thursday's fracas.

Minnesota's Aaron Voros could face a suspension for his hit from behind on Eric Staal and the Hurricanes had an extra skater on the ice during the brawl because it started during a line change.

Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford had a conversation with the hockey-operations office this morning, but said it was more about the interpretation and application of the instigator rule in this case.

He said he doesn't expect any Carolina players to be suspended and he wasn't sure about Voros.

The Wild play tonight in Atlanta, so any decision has to be handed down this afternoon.

UPDATE, 3:32 p.m.: An NHL spokesperson has confirmed that there will be no supplementary discipline assessed.
