Okay...I'm in the gifted program and for me, I have a tough decision when it comes to chosing high schools. So I REALLY need your help. One school has incredible academics, the other has everything else...so help me out...(remember? i'm a kid.)
1st school...North High
Music...this school has a INCREDIBLE music/band program there with an awesome director. Music is such a big part of my life.
Friends...a BUNCH of my friends are going there.
Location...it's really close. About 8 minutes away by car.
I overall like this school better.
Other school...IB school...
IB program graduates receive: A FULL college tuition in addition to 500 extra dollars.
2 really close friends are going including some old friends
The program will be perfect for me according to my teachers.
They're starting "Music IB"....ooooooh.
Downside: I don't exactly like the director (and neither does my CURRENT director) although I don't really know him.
Their band isn't as great as North's.
Location: 45 mins away
PRESSURE: Everyone (other than friends going to North and my director) is pressuring me into going there.
So, what do you think I should do?

IB, definitely. If they'll pay for college, don't pass up this opportunity.

FREE TUITION?? :eek2:
Speaking as the oldest of three whose father lost his job my last year at UNCW (GO SEAHAWKS- tonight 9:55 WRAL) and something like that would have been such a blessing to my youngest brother who now is going to have to pay his own way (after my other brother and I had ours paid for by our parents).

Is the free tuition good at U. of Michigan only or at any other state school? Where would you love to go to college (in your dream world)? IB programs are very hard and competitive--for those in Raleigh, Enloe is our IB high school--and if you are not totally into it you can get overwhelmed and depressed. Choose the place that your heart calls you to, the rest will fall into place.

I'd like to go to University of Michigan. (I think it applies to almost any school) Otherwise, I'll end up at Univ. of Florida.

I agree. Go wherever you think you will be the happiest at. My senior year at Broughton High school in Raleigh, the school switched over to an IB program for all incoming freshmen. I knew several freshmen and though they did like the course load was definitely far more difficult than the one I had gone through during high school. However, doing that would definitely get you more prepared for college and the free tuition it would give you when you graduate from the program would be an invaluable extra. It certainly is a bit further from where you live than your other choice and you know less people but I'm sure you'll meet more there.
In addition, I'm guessing the people you have kept in touch with over the years that are going to the other high school live somewhere near you. Though you wouldn't see them as much, you could still certainly keep in touch with them and hang out after school and on weekends. After my freshmen year I transferred to a different high school because I really didn't like anything about the current one I was going to. I knew many people at my old high school but at the one I transferred to I only knew one person. I kept in touch with several of my friends from my old high school and made more friends at my new one.
Either one would be a great choice, though I personally would pick the IB.
Hope that helped!

Personally, I'd choose North High. You already seem to know that is what will make you happiest. If I was given a straight choice between happiness and success, I would take happiness any day. That's how I have lived my life. It's full circle though, being happy has helped me become successful in a lot of ways. Obviously I don't know you or your situation though so take what I say with a grain of salt. Go with your instincts.

Regardless of my decision, I'll be happy and unhappy no matter which school I decide on. If I attend North, I'll be unhappy that I gave up such a large opportunity and such a good friend there. If I go to IB, I'll be upset over the fact that so many close friends are away from me and that I'm missing out on such a great band. If only the program were at North High. Wow, what luck that would be.
I'll be happy at both, but for different reasons. Then again, I'll also be unhappy too.

I thought about it all yesterday. I figure it to be this way:
I'm going to go to IB. (The 2 buddies at North are close but not as close as the two at IB) It'll be a lot easier next year to hang out because some of us are getting licenses. I'll manage. We'll still be friends although we'll probably gradually slip away.

I think you need to keep your friends out of it entirely. If a person is truly your friend, that person will remain your friend no matter where you go in life.
And since I'm old enough to be your mother -- one other thought:
You think these friends are so important now, but let me tell you -- Generally speaking, the friends you make for life usually happen in college or later, not in high school. . . . . .

There is one friend that I see every couple of months, we're still like brothers... that I've had since 6th grade. we've been best friends for almost 20 years. it's rare.
he's the only one from high school I ever get to see. sure, others I might get an email from once in awhile, but nobody that I have close ties with other than that one guy.
GREAT point by canesluver- she knows of what she speaks. (usually. ;) lol )

The friend going to IB, he also wants to attend the same college as me, also we have the same idea of a future occupation. (He's also a hockey fan) So it'd be really hard to part from him.
