Davidson Gives 275 Students Free Trip to Detroit for NCAA Game

Posted: Today at 1:52 p.m.

DAVIDSON, N.C. — It's a free for all at Davidson College.

Nearly 300 Davidson students will board five buses early Friday morning for an 11-hour drive to Detroit to support the surprising run of the men's basketball team at the NCAA tournament.

Behind sophomore sensation Stephen Curry, Davidson upset Gonzaga and Georgetown last week for the school's first NCAA tournament wins in 39 years.

The school's board of trustees set up a fund this week to pay for any student wishing to see Davidson play Wisconsin in the Midwest Regional semifinals. Students are getting bus transportation, two nights lodging and a ticket to Friday night's game for free.

College spokeswoman Stacey Schmeidel said Thursday that more students want to go - but school officials can't find more buses. About 1,700 student attend the liberal-arts college near Charlotte.

I happened to have the TV on CBS This Morning, when I was gettin' ready this morning. They had one of their on-air guys down there at Davidson doing a story.

He was outside and all the kids were in school colors and chanting, and the pep band was playing. They were all pumped-up and it was only 7-ish in the morning!

And he mentioned the school trustees were paying for the entire study body to go to the game. Pretty damn cool!

Ok ya'll know I am so not a basketball person, HOWEVER, I'm a Bruins alum ('87) and will get ZERO love around these parts- so I have to just say holla, for my Bruins another trip to the Elite 8, woo. I think the Alumni Assoc. sent out 3 emails to commemorate, lol.

Davidson is my fave and I have to cheer for Xavier too. I like underdogs as well.. even though Davidson had an awesome year, they still are considered an underdog in the land of the giants in the tournament.

And if Louisville does me a favor, they will be on my good list as well. :)

wrong, you are not alone! Being from SoCal, I have been a UCLA fan since the Wooden days!! (yes, I am old) I STILL cheer them on. Living out here for 10 years, I have become a UNC fan as well, so I am cheering on both these teams. Now if they play each other in the finals? I say, may the best team win! Yea, I dont think it's coming out of tuition or the endowment. My understanding is the board of trustees came up with the plan and some alumni stepped up to pay for it.

When I look at the Holes and I look at a team like Davidson, it shows me what heart is all about. So what if they win another NCAA championship.. what will it mean to them? Just bragging rights..I will admit that they have talent but they have a horseshoe up their arse that has been there as long as I have been watching ACC games since the 70s..... watch some of the old games and you will see what I mean. I like Cinderella and Underdog. Not to argue...just my opinion.

unfortunately you can't win a national championship on heart alone. but the heels have plenty, too. nobody on here was talking about davidson during the regular season, anyway. interesting.

btw, pretty much everyone on the current team hasn't won a championship, so it's not just for bragging rights. pretty sure they'll enjoy it thoroughly if that does turn out to be what happens.

To be honest, the N&O doesn't even cover other ACC teams (other than the Pack and those two blue teams :D) or ECU (and I am NOT a fan) so I had no idea that Davidson was having such an awesome year. Had I known I would have gladly given them props. Sad to see them go. :( I always enjoy watching upsets in the Big Dance.

C'mon, you know that is a ridiculous thing to say.

No one in Edmonton was talking about the Canes in January of 06 either but, they were by May. WTF? That's what playoffs are all about....the Cinderella, unexpected stories. And for those of us who couldn't care less about the NCAA, that's the only thing that could get us interested.

And don't forget you're talking about a school of several thousand vs schools of tens of thousands. Think for a moment about the recruitment programs at Davidson vs UNC or Duke or hell, even State. If UNC fans, or any fans, can't get how important that is I don't know what's wrong with them.

If Davidson hadn't had such a run I'd not even be able to tell you who the final four teams were. Now that they're out, I don't even care, except I'll be glad if UNC gets killed and especially glad if it's Kansas that does it.

This is the same Davidson team that came within a whisker of knocking off UNC in the first game of the season. If they could have made a layup or two in the second half, they would have.

And while we are on the subject of the tarheels(I refuse to capitalize it) how come no one has ever questioned Roy about the fact that when he first was offered the UNC job he turned it down because he could see that the cupboard was empty(witness the 8-20 season) yet when his "good" friend Matt Doherty had recruited some great players suddenly he had a change of heart. Good Ol' Roy is just out for Good Ol' Roy, don;t let his hillbilly bs attitude fool anyone. If anyone needs anymore proof, look at the quotes he made after Skip Prosser passed away. "Skip was the first to call when I won this or when I was elected to the HOF or when I came to NC or when I blah blah blah." Here is personally hoping they do not won the National Championship so we can all still say that he has never won the tourney with his players.

So I just noticed that if Kansas wants to make up national championship banners like say, Carolina, they're now tied with 5 "national championships".

Men's Basketball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_Championship)
1922 Helms Basketball Champion - coached by Phog Allen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phog_Allen)
1923 Helms Basketball Champion - coached by Phog Allen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phog_Allen)
1952 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1952_NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_Tournament ) - coached by Phog Allen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phog_Allen), won 80-63 over St. John's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s_University%2C_New_York)
1988 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_Tournament ) - coached by Larry Brown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Brown_%28basketball%29), won 83-79 over Oklahoma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Oklahoma)
2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_Tournament ) - coached by Bill Self (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Self), won 75-68 In Overtime over Memphis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Memphis) in San Antonio.

And I say made up banners because:
The first national championship tournament, in 1939, was conducted by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and sanctioned by the NCAA, which took over the tournament in 1940.

Prior to that the Helms Foundation (Los Angeles) retroactively selected Basketball National Champions from 1901 to 1941. In addition the Helms Foundation selected national college basketball champions from 1942-82. In most cases the selections were the NCAA tournament winners, however in 1939, 1940, 1944 and 1954 they were different. The titles werent earned but elected/selected with no tournament structure and thus no real validity other than the Helms Foundation's opinions of who would win. And you can see that they didnt even agree in cases where there was a real national champion who won the tournament. Also the NCAA doesnt recognize these "championships".

Conclusion - Prior to 1939, titles are BS and should be ignored. :D
