wasn't it mentioned earlier that our slogan and everything would be tied in with the draft? obviously i'm glad we're ditching 'this is hockey', but is anybody else apprehensive about that? i mean, if we were a very young team, i can see a slogan like 'blah blah the future' working, but we're not -- we just had a bad year last year. care to speculate, anyone?

:D sunday at the RecZone. i'm there. http://www.electrichyena.com/other/redthumb.gif is it open to the public, do ya think?

Anyone remember how Minnesota used a logo? I mean it seems a tad unrelated to the 82 game season. I'm all for promoting the draft, but not as the season slogan.

How about "we're back and we're pissed"?

I had assumed the first day of camp was Monday (w/o looking at a calendar to see the 3rd was a Sunday), but I think we might wander over on Sunday with the kids to check out the new faces. The rest of the practices (according to the RecZone site) seem to be at 4pm during the week. Not the greatest time for me.

If we can get in Amanda, I will be there too. I called the Zone and it IS open to the public!!! :spin: :spin: Get that camera ready!! :D

Yes! I've been for that happening for sometime...despite having purchased a "THIS..." keychain at The Eye recently. I seriously couldn't help it being the collector nut I am. Anyway, thanks to another LGC.com thread, I came up with new ideas regarding advertising and the slogan, giving kudos to those whose ideas I mentioned... :)

Of course, your "We're back..." idea Eileen isn't too shabby...my only problem with it? I'm not sure I could envision something as cute, cuddly, and kid-friendly as Stormy saying it, especially in a comic/animated ad if there was one. ;)

As far as a slogan, I've always thought that "Czech, please!" would be hilarious, and relate to the team, but I guess that wouldn't do too much with the draft, unless an abnormally large amount of Czechs were being drafted. (just kidding, though.)

Just for the sake of comparison, here is the logo that the Preds used.

since the draft logo represents the whole NHL to some extent, any ideas how much input the league office has in the "flash" allowed in the draft logo? it is very much in the mold of the Preds from last year. maybe that's the NHL league office input/influence.

I sure hope the Canes have their own logo/motto for this season, but maybe promoting the draft will be it.

You know, I don't mind this logo. It really doesn't have to be all "bells and whistles", as this isn't really something that traditionally makes money for the host team. The host community does make some decent coin in the hotels and restaurants, but this isn't traditionally something that is a great marketing tool, like say the All Star game. I think this is a respectable logo, and I wouldn't mind getting a shirt with it............ maybe I'll have to come down and take in the event, just to do that! Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. ;)

The AP article:

Hurricanes Gear Up For 2004 NHL Draft
Draft To Be Held In Raleigh

POSTED: 3:28 p.m. EDT August 6, 2003

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Atlantic Coast Conference schools have sent hundreds of players to the NFL and NBA over the years. Now it's time for the Triangle-area to start gearing up for - and understanding - the NHL Draft.

Officials of the Carolina Hurricanes, the NHL and local business leaders held a news conference Wednesday to unveil the logo for the 2004 NHL Draft, which will be held at the RBC Center next June.

Hosting the two-day draft is generally a precursor to landing an NHL all-star game. League spokesman Frank Supovitz said Raleigh is still on a short list of cities that could host an all-star game in 2005 or beyond.

Nashville hosted the draft this season, drawing 13,000 fans on the first day of the event.

"Because of the way this event travels around the NHL it's starting to get to a point of, 'Can you top this?"' said Ken Lehner, vice president for marketing communications for the Hurricanes. "It's a pressure point for us to make sure that it's very memorable, very successful and a model for other drafts."

Unlike NFL and NBA drafts, most of the players coming to Raleigh will be unknowns, many traveling here from Canada and other European countries. But the draft has an economic impact of $8 million and the NHL alone fills up 4,500 hotel rooms.

Entry to the draft is free and there are no "war rooms" like an NFL Draft, where general managers and scouts talk over what player to take.

"All the operations of the draft happen right in front of the fans, on the arena floor," Supovitz said. "It makes for an extremely exciting afternoon."

Lehner and Supovitz will spend the next few months planning events for fans, including a large fan festival.

"We feel this is an event that has the magnitude to get everybody united," Lehner said. "In all likelihood it might not come back to us for 20 years. We realize it's the summer and a challenging time for people to think about hockey, so it's very important that we start working on this now."

This draft will also be a challenge to organizers since Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are so spread out.

"Every city is different and every city has its opportunity," Supovitz said. "One of the opportunities that we have here is the ability to work hard to bring everybody together."

That occurred during the 2002 Stanley Cup finals as the area rallied around the Hurricanes with rallies and tailgating parties.

"I was here for the Stanley Cup championship and if there were records for the loudness in an arena you would be No. 1," Supovitz said. "Fans of the Research Triangle have an opportunity at the end of the draft to hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in enthusiasm and loudness in an arena."

Eric Staal, Carolina's No. 1 pick and second overall in 2003, said he'll never forget draft day.

"It's definitely the No. 1 memory in my hockey career," Staal said Wednesday as he sported a draft logo shirt. "Leading up to that day is pretty exciting. I'm just glad I didn't have to sit there very long."

Another from the Herald-Sun

NHL All-Star Game not guaranteed for Carolina
By R.L. BYNUM : The Herald-Sun
rbynum@heraldsun.com
Aug 7, 2003 : 1:00 am ET

RALEIGH -- Two years after experiencing the Stanley Cup Finals, one of the NHL's three marquee events, Triangle hockey fans will get another June 25-26 when the NHL Entry Draft comes to the RBC Center.

The draft and the third marquee event, the NHL All-Star Game, were promoted as rewards if the Carolina Hurricanes met their season-ticket goal during the "NHL All-Star Crusade" of 2001. Although the goal was met, if that game comes to Raleigh it could be years away.

NHL and Carolina Hurricanes officials, at a press conference to unveil the 2004 draft logo, said there is no guarantee the All-Star Game will come here because hotel and convention space requirements must be met. Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said he's confident that the game eventually will be awarded to Raleigh.

"The only guarantee is that the NHL draft is coming, but we've put ourselves in strong position to get the All-Star Game," Rutherford said. "I would think that the NHL All-Star Game will come to the Triangle somewhere between '07 and '09 if we're in position with the hotels and everything that meets the criteria. We're on the short list."

Frank Supovitz, the NHL's group vice president of events and entertainment, said that while the number of hotels in the Triangle is a good fit for the draft (4,500 hotel rooms will be used), the All-Star Game requires double that amount.

"We have made no decision as to when or if," he said. "I can't characterize it one way or the other. Carolina certainly figures prominently on the list of candidates."

Supovitz said that All-Star Game sites haven't been determined beyond next season's stop in St. Paul, Minn., but that some sites will be announced in the next year.

"The NHL draft is a steppingstone to the All-Star Game," Rutherford said. "If they like what they see in the market on the hotels and everything, then that next step would be the game."

That steppingstone is unique to pro sports. The NHL is the only pro league that rotates its draft sites each year. And unlike the NBA or the NFL, there are no "war rooms" in the teams' home cities.

"All the operations of the draft are right in front of the fans at the floor of the arena, which makes for an exciting afternoon," said Supovitz, who added that admission to the draft would be free.

Carolina's top draft pick this year, No. 2 overall pick Eric Staal, said the draft should be exciting for the fans.

"There are a lot of fans, and it makes it more interesting," Staal said, referring to the loud gathering in Nashville, Tenn., this year. "There's a lot of anticipation, and then you hear when trades happen. Not having to sit there very long was good for me."

The two-day draft will cap four days of activity that will include a special version of the team's annual Caniac Carnival that will feature activities for fans and a chance to view the Stanley Cup. The details of the fan activities will be worked out in the next few months.

"Because of the way this event travels around the NHL, it's starting to get to a point of, 'Can you top this?' " said Ken Lehner, the Hurricanes' vice president of marketing communications. "It's a pressure point for us to make sure that it's very memorable, very successful and a model for other drafts."

With 400 media representatives and 2,500 prospects and their families in town for the events, Supovitz said it's realistic to put the economic impact on the area at $8 million. He said marketing the draft will be an interesting challenge because the Triangle is so spread out.

NOTES -- The Hurricanes signed free agent Chad LaRose to a three-year contract. The 5-10, 173-pound right wing led the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers to the West Division title with 61 goals and 56 assists and 67 games last season. A Fraser, Mich., native, he has 111 goals, 90 assists and 116 penalty minutes in 152 regular-season games for Plymouth the last three seasons. ... This year's Caniac Carnival will be Sept. 28, which also is the day individual game tickets for October and November games will go on sale. ... The Nov. 23 home game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, originally scheduled for 5 p.m., has been moved to 7:30 p.m. because of the Women's Jimmy V. Basketball Classic at the RBC Center earlier that day.
