Figure this game is thread worthy on its own...
If the Caps get 1 point tonight, we're toast.

I would like to say I won't watch, but I KNOW I will.
We have no plans other than our SNLR, so how can I NOT? Of course, I won't watch if it's all over early.
If it's tied late in the game, it will be interesting to see how the Caps play it. Safe? Remember: "Safe is Death"....oh sorry, that's Tortspeak.

Good luck guys...For your sake, I hope the Panthers play like this game means something. They should...nothing better for a non-playoff team to "cap" off a season by eliminating another team (esp a divisional rival even if it's at the benefit of another).
The Oilers had a meaning-less game against the Canucks on Thursday but they started Roloson over their farm-hand...Jarret Stoll took a puck in the ear, went for stitches, came back and scored the winner to put the Calgary Flames into the playoffs (Flames still could have beat Vancouver on Saturday though).
If you don't make it...that will be a rough couple years for our respective franchises after that magical cup final :(

I will spend the day visualising 42-32-8. I don't think I'll watch tonight. I want to vomit.

I noticed this last night. Does anyone understand why players get fined instead of suspended? I guess my general thought was that you are fined for stupid stuff that happens after the whistle (like CAdams throat slash).
forward Matt Cooke made his first comments since being fined $2,500 for his hit on Lightning star Vincent Lecavalier. Lecavalier suffered a right shoulder injury.
"Anytime a superstar gets hurt," Cooke said, "there's going to be some ramifications. Fortunately it came down to a fine and not a suspension."
"Ouellet had the puck and I had my lane to pinch him off," he added. "Vinny came in behind me and it was incidental contact. Unfortunately he got hurt. It's no different than when [defenseman Shaone Morrisonn] got hurt. He didn't touch the puck; he just turned to go get it and Jeff Hamilton was right there. It was a hockey play."
Cooke's just glad be able to play tonight.

The outcome of tonight's game really doesn't matter. Well yeah it does. But you all know what I mean.
I can't decide whether or not I can watch, but I suspect sometime I'll be drawn in, just like to a wreck on the highway.

Well, nobody can say the hockey gods haven't helped us out a bit in this division race... and perhaps they will do it one more time.
Evidence of the help:
Back to back games for the Capitals when they recieved no points in the standings when they should have recieved at least 1 point in each game and at least 2. Remember Backstrom's own goal with seconds left when they were playing Pittsburgh? And Washington's complete meltdown started by Brashear against Boston?
You never know.

Does anybody actually think there's a chance the Caps are going to lose this game? They are the hottest team in the League, they have God himself playing for them, and the refs in their back pocket. It will take a miracle for Florida to win, and it can't even be close because every break is going to go the Caps' way.
But of course I'll be watching (with the sound turned down I'm sure)

A six-game winning streak has moved the Washington Capitals in position for their first postseason berth in five years. Extending the streak will wrap up that playoff spot.
The Capitals seek to clinch the Southeast Division title when they conclude their regular season against the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
Washington (42-31-8) has been unstoppable for nearly a month, winning six straight and 10 of its last 11 games as it seeks its first playoff appearance since 2002-03.
To reach the postseason, the Capitals must win the Southeast. They are tied for the division lead at 92 points with Carolina, which failed to clinch with its 3-2 loss to Florida (38-34-9) on Friday, completing its regular season.
Washington needs just one point to clinch the division, although a regulation loss against the Panthers on Saturday would make Carolina the Southeast champion and the No. 3 seed in the East.
"We haven't gotten anywhere yet," coach Bruce Boudreau, who has led the team to a 36-17-7 record since taking over for the fired Glen Hanlon, told the Capitals' official Web site. "We're in the same position we were in two weeks, two months ago and it comes down to one day. Hopefully, if we win, it's in our hands. The guys have played so hard and I just want them to get rewarded."
Alexander Ovechkin has keyed the Capitals' run, totaling 17 goals and 30 points in his last 17 games. His 112 points lead the NHL - six ahead of Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin.
Ovechkin registered his league-leading 64th and 65th goals to break Luc Robitaille's single-season NHL mark for left wings in a 4-1 home victory over Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Mike Green and Viktor Kozlov each had two assists for the Capitals, who will now seek their first seven-game winning streak since Feb. 9-23, 1993.
Washington has won three of its last four matchups with the Panthers, including last Saturday's 3-0 victory at Florida, where Cristobal Huet made 32 saves for his fourth shutout of the season.
Huet, who has won a career-best eight straight games, stopped 18 shots on Thursday to improve to 10-2-0 with two shutouts and a 1.69 goals-against average since he was acquired from Montreal at the trade deadline.
He is also 2-0-1 with a 0.65 GAA in three starts against Florida this season.
The Panthers, though, have won their last two games and are looking to finish with their most victories since winning a club-record 43 in 1999-2000 - the last time they reached the playoffs.
Radek Dvorak and Nathan Horton each had a goal and an assist in Friday's win, helping Florida record its franchise-record 20th road victory of the season.
"These games are crucial for other teams, and not necessarily for our playoff picture, but certainly these last two games, were excited about playing because we're going to have a say in what's to come," said Panthers defenseman Steve Montador, who scored the go-ahead goal at 13:06 of the first period.

You know I've been really hoping that they start Kolzig tonight? Potentially his last game in the uni and God knows he deserves it. 'Course I'm getting beat down by the Caps fans for wanting him in, but hey, the man was our franchise for a decade along with Bondra. I think he'd be up for this game.

And that's why we love you Sparky. It's easy to love the new shiny car, but when you've seen a player give so much to the team you love, CHOOSE to stay when he had every chance and right to leave, well , you can't just look at the last 10 minutes and forget about the last decade+.
I love Kolzig. The idea of him being in the net if the Caps won tonight, would certainly give me a slight smile because he's one of the good guys.
I saw how happy he was for Huet when they won the last game here in the Shootout. Seeing him play in a playoff game would make me far more happy for him than seeing AO play his first -- I know AO will have his chances.

From Luke's bud George at the Miami Herald
Just spoke to JM, says there is no change to the lineup so Panther fans, hope you got your fill of Branislav Mezei. He has probably played his final game in a Florida sweater. And Cory Murphy has been scratched four straight to end the season.
-- Craig Anderson gets the call and starts for Tomas Vokoun. Apparently Tomas' back is still hurting him and Tyler Plante has been called up from Rochester to serve as the backup.
Please let Anderson start and make it thru the game.

Interesting note: the announcer just said the Panthers take the most restraining penalties in the NHL (I assume this means Hooks, Trips, Holding). So maybe it's not that the Canes dive, it's that the Panthers are just slow.
And they are giving them 5 on 3s like candy (not like we didn't get the same chances)
Okay I'm sorry I have to say this about the Washington announcer. Florida hit's a post early in the game and he comments on how the goalie played his angles perfectly. Then Washington hits a post and "Anderson got lucky on that one" I'm not calling him a homer or anything, I'm just saying.
BTW: I'm desperate for some good mojo so I just wanted to say how I wish I had hair as nice as Ovechkin

For those not able to watch:
1st period, Fleishmann scores after wiffing a shot from the right boards, defender overskates it Fleishmann has a "look what I found" moment and skates in to score on Andersen.
Best chance for Fla, 2 on 1 and Dvorak fires the centering pass; only difference from last night, Huet makes the save. Caps with 2 dif 5 on 3's in the 1st. :57 & 1:03 respectively, and don't score.

I guess they must have said the penalty was committed before the goal. Although it was killed off by DC. And it clearly was a goal once they showed the replay.
And I just saw a replay and the penalty was committed before the goal. It happened right before the shot in the corner.

Caps scored 4 in the last 8 minutes or so against Atlanta a few weeks ago to erase a 2-goal third period deficit. Pardon me for not assuming that only Washington is capable of pulling that off.
Likely, no. Possible, yes. Not taking anything for granted on this end.
Ok, re read what you posted... CAPS against ATLANTA. not FLORIDA against CAPS. big ****in difference.

Well Sparky I don't mean to be rude, but you got to understand that as we deal with the hurt and disappointment, it is hard to read posts from a fan of the team that will oust us...whether you are civil or not.

No worries, and I do know the feeling. I'll cut out now. Thank you for the hospitality and the different take on the last few weeks. You guys are class and I'll see you around.

Oh - and I left Gerber out. I'd love for Gerbs to backstop the Sens to a Cup with Mike and Cory along for the ride.
I'm sure if we'd ever faced the Sens in our playoff runs I would have ended up with some sorta hate for them (especially because in 2002 they probably would have sent us home and 2006 who knows), but I just haven't had any negative Sens vibe all these years. They are the most logical team for me to pull for at this point.
And just because I'm vindictive, I'm hoping the Caps and their redclad bandwagon get swept in the 1st round. If they make it to the 2nd round, perhaps my feelings will subside a bit. But for now that's my plan.

You do realize a Canes win last night, plus a Philly win vs. Pittsburgh tomorrow would have eliminated that overrated bunch from Canada's capital, right?

I am still trying to let this sink in and I realized that I need to take my playoff tickets out of my pocketbook. :(
How much money did that cost the Canes? Not to mention the agony of us having to look at them until we can throw them away. :(

So, not to set of the "fair weather fans" alarms, but did anyone request a refund last season for playoff tickets? If so, how long did the refund take?
We only bought 2 seats last year (not really expecting to get in) so the credit was on our account. This season, we bought seats from friend's accounts and I'd like to get that money back, since it's going to sit on THEIR account, not mine.
In some warped way, I almost wish it was all going back to my account because I'd be more likely to leave it there and then not adjust our spending for next year's seats, but I know it's not wise. We barely make it to all our games with half the season of 4 seats. I'm sure this season we ate a half dozen or so tickets completely, gave away another 5-10, and then sold another handful for really cheap.
I wish I'd had more time with my seat.  I don't think my ass will be in that one next year!

Ok, I'm watching the second of the back to backs on Hockey Night in Canada. They're giving Trevor Linden a standing O (might be his last game after 20 seasons and he just waved) anyway, they did the wrap up of all the games w/highlights; I think I mentioned that I didn't watch this game, so now I see Ovie getting a little over the top with the arms and the pumping the crowd thing- and Ron McLean blasted him with "that's over the top." PJ Stock loved it. You don't act that way til you win it all. I've been an Ovie fan since the get go, but he's chipping it away.
I just looked over at Luke's blog and he posted the Canes Eliminated story, and he has a fight in his blog between some Caps trolls and Canes fans talking junk. Lovely.
I'm wide awake - can't go to sleep. I'm so annoyed.

A have a few friends that are Canes fans. In any sport, it sucks to have to rely on a team to win/lose just so you can "earn" a playoff spot.
Just look at the positive outcomes from this season. You guys managed to play tremendous hockey towards the latter half of the season without some of your leading scorers. Eric Staal was the key component that kept you guys alive for the latter half of this season, not only by his scoring touch, but by his ability to prove that he is a leader out there on the ice. Once Brind'Amour hangs 'em up, rest assured he will be your next captain.
Also the Cans can look forward to Brandon Sutter and the bright future he'll have in the league. And Samsonov? By all means, do what you can to keep him in the offseason. You guys have completely revived and rejuvinated his career. I had to endure the punishment of watching him score two goals against my Devs, one being the game winner in OT... :(
It sucks to have to deal with an offensive powerhouse that hogs up so much media attention just with one glamour boy player. We have to put up with the Pittsburgh Crosbys. For the next 13 years, you guys are going to have to deal with Washington Ovies (Haha, I know, I'm lame).
Also, you guys don't have to worry about the possibility of losing to your most loathed and hated rivals. All I can tell you guys is that I'm going to be mentally unstable for the next week or two.

Well today it is totally sinking in. I will not be able to read the sports section anytime soon. But hey, it would have cost me way more than I could afford and playoffs get in the way of planning trips in the spring and summer right? .......so I keep telling myself. :(
