Seconded! My nephew got a toddler-size Avs jersey, just for this series too. :D
GO AVS! WIN IT FOR THE FLEA!

I wonder if we'll hear the standard Western rhetoric this year, even though the Avs are a low seed...
You know the one...
"This is the real Stanley Cup Final"....

 I said that to hub last night Guy. Real indeed.

Aw, c'mon. NONE of you would hate the Red Wings so bad if they all played for the Canes.

They're just misunderstood, thanks to the media.

What have we missed?
Oh yeah - the NHL wants the the Wings to return to their glory days and get the Detroit media market watching thru the finals. Cue up the refs w/o any semblance of a conscience to help them along.

Very true.
Except for Chelios--he's an old dirty *******.
And Hasek. He's a diving drama queen.
But other than that? Yeah, I'd take 'em--or at least Ken Holland, so he can build us a team like that.

This is one of those match-ups that I really don't care that much about.
However '02 will always be a reason to hate the Wings.
Go Avs.

I hate the Avs.. I hate the Wings. Maybe they will just kill each other and do me a favor.

OMG DETROIT IS FREAKING CHARMED!!!!

I like the potential of this series due to their history.
Anyone remember this historic Avs-Wings battle (http://www.hockey.com/hockey-blogs/nhl-news/948-red-wings-avalanche-set-to-renew-playoff-hostilities.aspx)? Great video of an all-out brawl, goalies going at it - I hope there's that much emotion in this one.

The first 20 minutes so, I thought the Avs are toast this series. But then they got their act together and made a game of it. This could be a very good long series.

the avs being mountain time it's not as huge an issue, but (to many chagrins, i'm sure) i'm pulling for the wings if for no other reason than: more eastern time zone games.

This is just pathetic.
And I'm not necessarily saying all the calls were unfair but, 6 penalties in 6 minutes is a bit much.
I think the fix is in.....

Tonight's game is set for 10 PM. TEN! That's too late for hockey.

Last time I checked, the entire NHL isn't located in the Eastern Time Zone. :p

There's a thought that Franzen should be Conn Smythe MVP (http://www.hockey.com/hockey-blogs/fantasy-hockey-news/971-johan-franzen-nhl-playoff-mvp-its-not-a-conn-job.aspx)this year, from how he's done so far at least.
I'm kinda thinking Osgood is looking better, myself, or Malkin.

Conn Smythe? What, have they already given the Cup to Detroit?

I know a lot of folks here have Center Ice, and are watching the games that way, but for those of us watching on VS., here's an important update:
In the event tonight’s New York Rangers (http://www.newyorkrangers.com/) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (http://penguins.nhl.com/) game extends beyond the scheduled 10 p.m. ET starting time of the Detroit Red Wings (http://redwings.nhl.com/) vs. Colorado Avalanche (http://avalanche.nhl.com/) game, VERSUS will adjust its exclusive coverage of the Stanley Cup Conference Semifinals.
Scenario – Rangers vs. Penguins Game Extends Beyond 10 p.m. ET
Cable viewers in the Detroit and Colorado markets will be switched automatically to the beginning of Detroit Red Wings (http://redwings.nhl.com/) vs. Colorado Avalanche (http://avalanche.nhl.com/) semifinal Game 4.
Cable viewers in the rest of the country will join the Detroit vs. Colorado game in progress at the conclusion of the New York vs. Pittsburgh game.
Satellite viewers on DirecTV and Dish Network will be able to watch the Detroit vs. Colorado game in its entirety on an auxiliary channel.
DirecTV - Channel 659
Dish Network - Channel 452

That's a bit dubious. To suggest that someone is a leading candidate at this point for the Conn Smythe is not the same as suggesting that the Cup is already won. Come on. Do we really want to go back to the round two threads for 2006 or 2002 and see if any of us were talking about who was leading the team?
That said, this series is freaking OVER. 5-1 Red Wings midway through the 2nd.
Guyute

6-1 midway through. Then 7-1 before the end of the 2nd. Unreal. Couldn't imagine being an Avs fan right now, being in your building, down 3-0, and watching THAT game. UGH. Over is right.
Then again, not sure it was ever a series that you could say wasn't Over...

I had no doubts that the Wings would take this round but it would have been nice for the Avs to win one at home.

It was 5-1 when I went to bed.
When I checked the score on-line this morning, I just had to LMAO at 8-2!
I'm trying hard to not like Detroit, but they're such a different composition than the '02 team, that I'm finding it difficult to do so. I'm finding myself admiring their play of late. They just plain steam-rolled the sharks. And... if they should win the next round, it'd mean all the Cup final games would be played in the Eastern time zone which'd make me happy!
SouthernHockeyChick
05-02-2008, 09:11 AM
Detroit steam-rolled the sharks?!? Did I sleep through an entire series?!??!
Yeah, we went to bed when it was 5-1 as well. How painful to sit through that game.
I hate the Wings now for the same reason I hated them in 2002....dominance. And they're boring. My god, can we get some new blood already?!?
Considering no one here was willing to type out the actual word "Cup" in 2006, I'd find it hard to believe anyone would have been saying "x player SHOULD be the Conn Smythe MVP" in round 2. I realize that's not how the article words the discussion, but for the post that started the discussion to be "Frazen should be the Conn Smythe MVP" as if we either should give it to him even if the Wings are eliminated this round or, as if it's an absolute given they're going to the Finals....that's a bit much.
I know people don't want to stay up late but, if the West games are the SAME TIME as the East games.....well that just sucks! I can't watch two things at once and I don't have time to watch it later.

05-02-2008, 09:24 AM
ooops-- sorry.... Avalanche -- I forgot which series I was talking about!
(and I'll admit... I didn't really watch all that much of it...)

So pitiful. I feel for the Avs fans to see 2 losses like that- brutal.
I'm with you SHC- I hate DET just because of the sheer dominance. I really hate them- but I really do love watching Hank Zetterberg score those pretty goals. He's just awesome.
Maybe the 3rd round is when they'll get smacked. All that hard work and they'll just tank. (I know, I'm really stretchin' it here)

I despise the Wings but if they don't get booted out of the first round.. look out! They are a team that only gets stronger when they smell the blood. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win it all. :hurl:
If there is any justice in the hockey world, Holmstrom will get hemorhoids in his big arse.:D
