Well, Team USA and our #42 started camp up in Maine yesterday, as did Team Canada and our #12, #13 and #30 in Quebec City.

I see that World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) is back with their online broadcasts- I'm hoping we'll get something on NHL Network(?)

Here's the sched:

http://web.wcsn.com/schedule/index.jsp?s=34029&e=hockey_worlds_2008

and an article on Eric from the first day of Canada's camp:

http://www.faceoff.com/hockey/nhlnews/story.html?id=4740db33-9f23-480b-959d-9bdceee74520&k=18472&add_feed_url=http%3a%2f%2fwww.faceoff.com%2ftopsto ries.atom

This will be exciting because the games are here in North America: Tourney kicks off on Friday 5/2-biggest games of interest surely are USA v Latvia, and Canada v Slovenia.

I'm reading up on all the early talk- mostly that this is the auditon/precursor for Team Canada at least, for Vancouver 2010- in fact I heard and Eric Staal soundbite about wanting to be "counted on for Canada in Vancouver". Should be fun to watch........ I just don't want to get used to seeing our guys playing for the Worlds, if you know what I mean......

Go Everyone! :usa::canada:

The contact page on the NHL Network's site is still not up and the only person I could find to email works on the Canadian side who is obviously not carrying the World's because TSN has them. His thought was that the NHL Network in the US would carry the TSN coverage of any USA games that TSN was broadcasting but he wasn't sure. So it sounds like it'll be similar to the coverage of the World Juniors where we got the US games and the championships but that has not been confirmed yet.

So bottom line, I really have no real information although it does sound like it is very possible they will show some of the games.

There's some footage that includes an interview with Cam - talking about winning last year's WC gold was a "close 2nd" to the Stanley Cup, and quotes from Hitchcock about having no #1 goalie going into the tournament.

http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/story/?id=235675&lid=sublink01&lpos=headlines_main

Video on right side.

And there's also photos of Team Canada's new "Retro Futuristic" (WTF?) jerseys.

News article about the pre-tourney game Saturday night between Canada and Finland:

Spirit of St. Louis

By TERRY JONES (tjones@edmsun.com), SUN MEDIA

QUEBEC CITY -- Considering what kind of career he's had so far, you'd have figured Martin St. Louis would have heard it often.

"St. Louis! St. Louis! St. Louis!" the crowd chanted for the Laval, Que., product who scored two goals last night to lead Canada to a 3-2 win over Finland in a pre-tournament game before the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

"That was inspiring," he said. "It doesn't happen too many times. It hasn't happened to me many times at all," said the Tampa Bay Lightning star who won a Stanley Cup without hearing his name chanted like it was here.
"I couldn't believe how loud that crowd was," said coach Ken Hitchcock of the 7,238 fans who showed up at Colisee Pepsi to see the two teams that squared off in the gold medal game at last year's Worlds in Moscow.
That was a pretty impressive number, considering the Canadiens were playing Game 2 of their Stanley Cup playoff series in Montreal.
But there are seven members of the Canadian team, including St. Louis who played before more people here when they were 12 and playing in the famed Quebec peewee tournament.

Nobody, however, chanted "St. Louis! St. Louis! St. Louis" when he played peewee.

A near-capacity crowd is expected here tomorrow night when Canada plays Russia.

PENALTY SHOT
Hitchcock liked what he saw at the front end of every period, but not at the end - especially at the end of the third when Olli Jokinen of the Florida Panthers was awarded a penalty shot with 75 seconds to play and Ville Peltonen, his Panthers teammate, scored at 19:13 when Ed Jovanovski went down as a resultof a puck in the face.

Edmonton native Jason Chimera of the Columbus Blue Jackets scored the other Canadian goal.

Tuomo Ruutu of the Carolina Hurricanes also scored for Finland.

Sherwood Park product Cam Ward of the Carolina Hurricanes started in goal for Canada, giving up one goal in his 30 minutes in net, giving way to St. Labriel-de-Brandon, Que. native Pascal Leclaire of the Columbus Blue Jackets who also gave up the one at the end after stopping Jokinen on the penalty shot.

"A lot of things early we liked a lot," said Hitchcock. "But our energy level dropped down quite a bit in the last five minutes of every period."

FORCED TO WITHDRAW
Ray Whitney, the Fort Saskatchewan product of the Carolina Hurricanes, was forced to withdraw from the Canadian roster due to a recurring ankle injury. With Team Canada electing not to replace him, it moves Sam Gagner of the Edmonton Oilers one step closer to seeing tournament action.

Gagner, 18, was the youngest player in the NHL this year. He was named to Team Canada as the alternate forward.

"Gagner, I thought was really good," said Hitchcock. "For such a young kid walking into something like this was really good."

Rick Nash, Ryan Getzlaf, Dany Heatley, Chris Kunitz, Dan Hamhuis and Brent Burns have yet to join Team Canada.

The Finns roster features Nicklas Backstrom of the Minnesota Wild and Karri Ramo of the Tampa Bay Lightning in goal with Joni Pitkanen of the Oilers and Ville Koistinen of the Nashville Predators on defence.

Wild forward Mikku Koivu, Tuomo Ruuto of the Carolina Hurricanes, Ville Peltonen of the Panthers, Jussi Jokinen of the Lightning and Niko Kapanen of the Phoenix Coyotes play up front for Finland.

They'll play in a Quebec City pool with Germany, Norway and Slovakia while Canada is in a group with Slovenia, Latvia and the U.S. in Halifax.

Wow - thanks for the Ray update. I'm glad he's still resting his ankle if there is any lingering effects.

I was curious about him because I saw him in N Ral the evening before they were opening Camp.

edit: on second thought, we're almost a month past the final game of the season. While Ray came back a little early from the "minor" surgery to his ankle, he only played 2 games on it. I realize he probably tested it while working out for Worlds, but I guess I'm concerned that he's STILL not completely healed. :(

In reading about the USA's 5-1 exhibition win over Sweden, they are sure a bunch of babies (in AGE, not demeanor, lol).

Adam Burish has a blog, talks about how young the team is, etc.

http://www.usahockey.com/Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=TU_01_03&id=228414

Halpern was named Captain.

Recap of USA/Sweden game:
http://www.usahockey.com/Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=TU_01_03&id=228336

And Canada lost their final exhibition, 4-1 to Russia. Cam split the game again with LeClair and each allowed 2 goals.

Thanks for posting the Blog! I heart Adam Burrish. He's one of my favorite young gritty players and of course plays for one of my fave western conf. teams the 'Hawks. Great win vs Sweden. and LOL, Craig Anderson was in goal. of course he was, the Canes killa.

Go Team USA! Even if Torts is the coach. I heard him on XM yesterday with Tatti & Espo and shockingly he comes across as human and (gasp) humble. I don't know how in the sam hell that happened, but don't think I'm jumpin' on his bandwagon, lol.

:usa:

Ok, now Canada? I saw Hitch's quotes about the "wake up call" and all that and this loss to Russia- I hope is the Wake up call, cause who wants to lose on Canadian soil eh???

Ok, the Worlds have started today- I've got Czech's v DEN on right now- they're playing in Le Colisee Pepsi, and I have a question- is it a pre-requisite to have the Skoda car on a platform on both ends of the ice even in North America???? I thought that was strictly a Euro thing!

Czech's winning 4-2; Ex Cane Vrbata has 2 goals and Ales Kotalik one goal and a guy I've not heard of - presuming he plays in Europe; scored the other- and the other Kaberle is playing- wasn't Frank supposed to play too?

There is a guy for CZE , his name sounds like "Erkel"

Canada at 3:20 (Cam starts) and Team USA @ 7pm EST.

$4.95 a month is a good deal for all of the hockey so I gave in and subscribed again but when I clicked on the Czech/Denmark game it said I was blacked out. So I closed it out and reopened it and now it just says that there is an error.

Is it still working for you SoCal?

Edit: after about 15 minutes on tech support (mostly on hold) I got it working. Then it dawned on me that my cable internet at home is a lot slower then the internet I had at college last year.

LT- had no problems- sorry you did- hope it's going ok.

CHC- I completely forgot- yes, Frankie needs surgery again.

Edit: there's a guy singing the CDN national anthem, and he's doing it unplugged style guitar and all. Verrrry interesting...

I forgot how much pagentry there is in this tourney.

SoCalcaniac

LOL CL that would be great.

So Canada looks all off kilter- but lead the Slovenians 1-0. Cam has maybe faced 3 or 4 shots. Anze Kopitar of course is the only NHL player, and I read a quote by him that they were gonna try and keep Canada to "less than 5 goals"

Do I have it right, Hitchcock has our #12 on a line with Spezza and St. Louis? The S-Line? Staal/Spezza/St. Louis? It appears Eric is playing the wing and or alternating center with Spezza. #12 hit a post on the PP

Ok it's Heatley in the box for elbowing- and this dude said "Staios" and this guy is brutal- he's rolling his r's like crazy- a la Chuck; he's obsessed with all the exotic sounding Slovenian names. he seems clueless as to what is going on, and all of a sudden he sounds like he's being choked or losing his voice.

2-0! :usa: Another PPG -- this time by Patrick Kane

Tim Thomas in goal. He's not been tested much, but he did make a point-blank highlight reel save a few minutes ago.

I haven't a clue how to spell his name, but one of Lativian's star players just left the game after blocking a shot. It looks like he took the shot on the instep of his right foot. He was writhing in pain on the ice. :(

Tortellini actually looks relaxed.

Thanks CL. I spent the evening getting home from work, and then chasing my dog (well not really chasing because she basically vanished) around my neighborhood. On foot, on bike, and in car. Then I decided to drive up to the nearest busy intersection to see if she'd REALLY gone far and stopped to get gas (me, not the dog). Then I finally gave up (I was the only one home) after 8pm and sat on my front stoop, a foam cup of wine, a bottle of water, a magazine, and a McDs cheeseburger I found in the fridge, and no sooner did I unwrap the cheeseburger, I hear the jingle of her collar/tags and she comes bounding up and sits down in front of me waiting for her bite. Little *****!

So I came in, poured another glass of wine and watch the most ridiculous shows on TV.

So THANKS for the recap!

Oh, my pleasure (and I'm glad your pup's safe-and-sound after her walkabout :) )

I'm a tad annoyed with WCSN, though. Last year, they kept the cameras on for the handshakes and awarding the game's MVP. This year, they're cutting off the broadcast after showing a bit of the winning team congratulating their goalie.

I'm disappointed..... I wanted to see if this year's host country was giving to the MVP, the pretty gift bag with the candle, scented soap & foaming bath gel, like Russia did last year.

Tim Gleason is wearing #6, btw. David Backes snatched #42. It took me awhile to find Timmy. All the teams were wearing vintage sweaters yesterday (in celebration of 100 years of IIHF tournaments), and Team USA wore copies of the 1960 Squaw Valley sweaters-- and they don't have player names on the backs. (Compounded with watching on a computer screen, the lack of names makes it a wee bit difficult to pick people out.)

Maybe they'l go back to their current sweaters tomorrow.

I caught some of the USA game last night but not all of it- nice win by both Canada vs Latvia and the US vs Slovenia. That Heatley line is killing everyone- shocked that our #12 didn't get a point in a 7-0 romp. Patrick Kane & Phil Kessel for us- WOW.

The showdown is tommorow vs Canada. Wonder if Cam's starting?

This just made me smile- I love the Latvians:

There were some empty seats at the Metro Centre for the second straight Canadian game but it didn't ruin the atmosphere. A rowdy contingent of Latvians made itself heard among the crowd of 7,831 by pounding drums and singing - even as their team continued to be scored on again and again.

"When some countries are down 7-0, I think their fans would have left," said Nash. "They've probably got the best following out of the countries that are here."

Now they are passionate. I'll be snarky and say, where are all the Canada fans? I know it's Latvia and all but aren't they the bearers of the hockey torch?? The passion that unites us all, lol. (I know, that's the Laffs slogan) but you know what I mean. ;)

Go everyone!

I found this in one of the Canadian papers today- and it comes in the nick of time, as I wondered out loud on Sunday how Canada scores 7 goals and Eric Staal's name shows up nowhere in the stats except for some roughing penalty or whatever. He's playing on the all S line of Spezza/Staal/St. Louis.; I personally think a Staal/Spezza combo is ill advised- Staal & Spezza are NOTORIOUS for all that fancy dancing- Spezza in particular, too damn cute for their own good; St. Louis is gonna score cause goes to the dirty areas, and he's a buzz-saw. I think Hitch is missing the mark on this one. He needs to work it out.....

Spezza's line looking for chemistry

HALIFAX - Team Canada's big line is obviously well worth watching, but the coaches have their eyes on the second unit of Jason Spezza, Eric Staal and Martin St. Louis for entirely different reasons.
"I think that's a line we've got to take a look at," head coach Ken Hitchcock said yesterday. "That's a line we might throw some wrinkles into. We're going to put (Derek) Roy into that group, and mix and match as a four-man unit."
That's probably as close as Hitchcock is likely to come to criticism here. Team Canada appreciates the fact its players have committed themselves to a month of work after their NHL seasons ended in disappointment. So the coaches are all about motivation.
But the fact remains that something just hasn't been right with Staal, Spezza and St. Louis. They lack chemistry and production. Canada has scored 12 times in two games, and St. Louis has a pair of goals while the other two members of that line have managed just an assist each.
"I'm not sure," Staal said when asked why they have failed to click, albeit for only two games. "It's always an adjustment playing with new guys. They are two very skilled players. For me, it's about adjusting to left wing."

Those two look like Pudge Monkey vs. Lean Machine. Cam's rockin' some 'chops, too!

And... did anybody notice that it's time for "Tuu-tuu's for Ruutu?" Our Rootie got the game-winner for Finland last night! :D

The US vs. Canada one will be tough for me. I know based on my citizenship I should root for Team U.S.A..... but if we win, that means Cam & Staalsy will have lost. :( I feel so torn... and.... a little dirty... ;)

SoCalcaniac
05-06-2008, 08:35 AM
CL- I know exactly what you're feeling- is it not funny that we have a rooting interest in both teams? I think of any of event, anything that has to do with USA and it's USA all the way- but with hockey, all of a sudden that patriotic behavior gets kind iffy.

and I did hear Ruu-tie scored for Finland- where are the tu-tu's for Ruuuutu?? :)

I found another goodie- this is about the Latvians taking over Halifax. HILARIOUS stuff. My first real recognition of how passionate the Latvians are, was probably the Worlds in 2002 (?) the drums, the singing and all that, was the first time I started to pay attention and they have become my favorite 'little team' to root for.

http://www.nationalpost.com/sports/story.html?id=492267

Though the International Ice Hockey Federation has yet to pass an official bylaw, it is generally assumed a world championship cannot be held without at least 500 Latvians in the house.

So, at the end of the 1st, it's 2-0, Canada.

We're out-shooting them 13-4, but Cam's doing a great job keeping our goals out -- I'm sorry, but I just can't feel too bad about that! LOL

1st goal by Brent Burns, with nice assists from Staal (and IMO, Staal would be playing even better if Hitchcock would let him play center - mini-rant over) and Spezza.

2nd goal in the waning seconds by Dany Heatley, assisted by Nash & Getzlaf.

We'd be on the scoreboard, if Cam wasn't standing on his head. US looks good and hasn't let Canada run-around in our end at all.

Pretty good game so far, and actually closer than the scoreboard indicates.

Goals for Canada from Toews, and Parise & O'Sullivan for the U.S.

(I've gotten a busy spurt at work, so am currently listening a little more than watching....)

I was able to find an Ottawa radio feed that I can access at work. Sounds like Thomas is screwing the pooch for US. Or are they goals he really didn't have a chance on for those you can watch?

But from listening I'd say Cam is outplaying Thomas big time. I'm also reading on HF and everyone is posting "Nice save Cam", "what a save by Cam", "nice glove save by Cam". Makes me happy that he is ours.

EDIT: And as I hit submit, US scores 2 goals

I've searched a little bit, and so far I haven't found anything about an injury or surgery.

I just found this in the The Buffalo News, dated April 10th:

The team has named just one goaltender (Florida’s Craig Anderson), and the Sabres’ Ryan Miller said this week he would think about playing. If he's still sulking about not making the playoffs, someone needs to kick him in the ass and buy him a plane ticket to Halifax.

O.K.... one more find.... I went to the Sabres' message boards (I know... I need to wash the filth away!), and someone asked that question there, and the general consensus is he declined because of exhaustion. Guess a keg or two of Amp won't do the trick. :smoke:

Yeah, didn't mention it, because we don't get to see the player of the game ceremony this year on WCSN. :roll. They cut the whole handshake thing off and all the awards and crystal giving out of the broadcast. I knew he'd get it- he did stand on his head eh?

CL- thanks for the Miller info- Miller is "exhausted"? , he should fill up on some protein, like a steak or something. as for the rumbling that he might still be smarting over not making the playoffs- Well, um, get in line dude. half those guys playing for Team USA didn't get a shot or got ousted. Thus, the reason why they're playing in the worlds.

Oh, good! I was hoping he'd get it. Well-deserved.

They've been cutting off the web broadcast before handing-out the awards (they didn't do that last year), so none of us knew.

On the IIHF website, they keep a list of the players-of-the-game (under the "statistics" tab), but it hadn't been updated when I checked about 30 minutes ago.

livinthedream
05-06-2008, 09:48 PM
I didn't see it anywhere "official" either, just some general b*tching in one of the game threads over on one of the other boards because it wasn't given to Heatley.

And what I read about Miller is that Buffalo just wore him out down the stretch at the end of the season (something like 30 out of the last 32 games) and he needed time off, although now after a month off he may be reconsidering (if he's allowed at this stage).

ETA: Looks like Miller was 3rd for the regular season (behind Brodeur and Nabokov) in TOI and games played (Cam was 8th and 7th respectively).

SoCalcaniac
05-07-2008, 08:14 AM
Yeah, and Nabokov has just joined Team Russia at the Worlds; that dude has played alot of hockey..

I was listening to XM on my way home from the gym this morning- Jeff Halpern is out for the rest of the tourney- Torn ACL! He's having surgery today I believe. I knew he didn't look good going off the ice in the 3rd, but dang. He's become an instant favorite of Torts' and Halpern is pretty good two way guy.

Lots of commentary in the national media on the Canada v US game- most headlines were of the "wake up call" variety and many slams on how Canada couldn't match the speed of the young US team. Anyway, I know we all love our respective countries-but it's during these tourneys when I just have to hold my tongue at some of the comments:

''We played really hard right to the end,'' said Canadian forward Ryan Getzlaf. ''We take pride in those kind of wins. We were raised that way.''

Shane Doan:

''It's our sport we feel and we have to win,''

I know it's their sport and it matters so much more to them apparently, but it's just a peeve of mine to constantly hear it. It's like all the other teams are just occupying time and Canada's space. Ok, shutting up.

''We played really hard right to the end,'' said Canadian forward Ryan Getzlaf. ''We take pride in those kind of wins. We were raised that way.''

As opposed to the American hockey players who apparently weren't raised to take "pride in those kinds of wins"?

I don't care who wins (A US win would be nice), but I hope Canada does not. I guess I can be nice and hope that's it's Leclaire the gets shelled over Cam, but that's as far as my Cane-allegiance goes.

Swiss upset the Swedes behind Jonas Hiller in net ... but here's the news for our purposes:

Hornqvist scored a short-handed goal at 19:01 to cut the Swiss lead to one, but penalties hamstrung the Swedes late in the game.

Niclas Wallin was given a five-minute major for checking Roman Wick from behind and received an automatic game misconduct.

A dazed Wick had to be helped off the ice and Krueger said after the game the prognosis didn't look good for the Swiss forward.

Minutes later, Vancouver Canucks defenceman Alexander Elder was given a 10-minute misconduct plus a minor penalty for checking from behind.

So this is 'insteresting' news on the Team Canada front :eek2: :

Spezza takes fourth-line job in stride

Ottawa star has seen playing time reduced by nearly six minutes in last three games

<!-- PUBLISH DATE -->May 08, 2008
<!-- AUTHOR 1 -->Kevin McGran
<!-- CREDIT 1-->SPORTS REPORTER
<!-- ARTICLE CONTENT-->HALIFAX–For a guy who has seen his ice time dwindle over three games in a high-profile event, Jason Spezza is taking his demotion to Team Canada's fourth line rather well.

"Grinding it out, that's the strength of my game," joked Spezza. "I'm playing with a guy in (Patrick) Sharp who scored close to 40 goals. I don't think it's too much of a demotion."

There was no sulking, no sense of a deflated ego, no me-first comments, just the attitude that permeates throughout the dressing room that the Canadian players are putting team needs ahead of personal glory.
"You just want to have a regular shift at these things," said Spezza. "Everybody's a great player. You're so-called fourth line here could be a first line on most NHL teams."

Yet there has to be some concern about the Ottawa Senators star who sputtered through the playoffs on a bad knee in a four-game sweep by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Spezza says he's healthy, but his line with Eric Staal on left wing and Martin St. Louis on right just didn't gel. Derek Roy got a tryout on the line against the Americans, scored, and now has the gig on the second line. Staal will move back to centre.

Spezza, with one assist in three games, has seen his ice time come down from 15:39 in Game 1 to 14:33 in Game 2 to 9:50 against Team USA, third lowest total on the team.

"I know it does (look like a demotion), but don't read anything into it," said Team Canada coach Ken Hitchcock. "I like the way he's playing, he's managing the puck the right way.

"To me, he's getting better and better. His pace is up there. He was 15 and 14 minutes before because we didn't have a lot of power plays, and he doesn't kill penalties for us."

Hitchcock took stock of his team yesterday after practice, reflecting on a 5-4 victory over the U.S. that exposed more than a few problems. He said his defencemen were too eager to lead the rush. He doesn't want to get into a game like that again where both teams essentially trade chances.
"It looked at times like a ping pong game, with a 3-on-2 this way, and 3-on-2 that way," said Hitchcock. "That's the area that we've got to get better at. We don't want to get into games where we're doing nothing but trading chances. Some teams play like that and don't mind doing that. It's not the way we play to be successful."

Hitchcock is happy with the play of third-line checkers Jamal Mayers, Chris Kunitz and Jason Chimera.
But with the first line – Dany Heatley, Rick Nash and Ryan Getzlaf – providing most of the team's offence so far, Hitchcock is trying to kick start some offence from other quarters.

Hitchcock insisted the tinkering would continue in today's game (3:30 p.m., TSN), and wouldn't even use the term "fourth" line.
"We want to get two third lines in there," said Hitchcock. "We're trying to prop up the third line and trying to establish the second line. We're not there yet. We're a work in progress. We're seeing some things we like and seeing some things we need improvement on."

With fewer timeouts and TV commercial breaks than the NHL, the pace of the game is faster and the games are over quicker. All 13 forwards and seven defencemen dress in this tournament.

That means Spezza, Sharp, Shane Doan and Jonathan Toews will take turns on the fourth line throughout the game.

Way to break out............. I think Cam had 15 saves- had a shut out til he gave up one on a 3 on one that looked a little kicked in- by Canada; but the announcer said he made a few "big saves when Canada needed him"

CL- they showed the presentations on WCSN, Jean Beliveau gave Staalsy his gift, and they showed some of the handshake line- Eric and Seids shaking hands and Seids giving him a big pat on the back.

Canada Beats Germany in a Rout at the IIHF Worlds
Canadian Press
HALIFAX - Eric Staal picked a good time to make his presence felt at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.
The Canadian forward picked up his first four goals of the tournament in the team's 10-1 rout of Germany on Saturday. He also added an assist during a game that really could have used a mercy rule.
At the end of the second period, the Canadians had almost as many goals (nine) as the Germans had shots (10).
Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley, Patrick Sharp, Derek Roy and Mike Green also scored for Canada while Martin St. Louis picked up five assists.
Frank Hordler spoiled Cam Ward's shutout bid with a goal for Germany midway through the third period.
The German team has been surrounded by scandal during this event and simply didn't have any life against the Canadians, who skated as well as they have all tournament.
Canada has a 5-0 record here but it's hard to gauge exactly where the team is at because it's yet to face one of the other big powers. Monday's game against Finland could be an important one as the winner gets the top seed heading into the quarter-finals and will likely face Norway in the first must-win game.
Staal is one of the Canadian forwards who will be needed to provide secondary scoring in the big games. He and St. Louis became the sixth and seventh Canadian players in the modern era to record five points in a game at this event. Eric Lindros holds the record with six _ a feat he accomplished twice during the 1993 world championship in Germany.
This game got ugly in a hurry.
Spezza opened the scoring at 5:14 of the first period when he skated in off the wing and outwaited Dimitrij Kotschnew before sliding the puck between the German goalie's legs. He was dropped to the fourth line early in the event after struggling to find his rhythm and celebrated his first goal here by pumping his fist enthusiastically.
A familiar figure extended the lead to 2-0. Heatley scored his tournament-leading seventh goal after beating a defender and knocking his own rebound by Kotschnew at 13:35.
Staal's first of the night came 30 seconds later and Sharp made it 4-0 with 22.9 seconds left in the first period when his centring pass went in off a skate.
German coach Uwe Krupp sent in goalie Robert Mueller to start the second period but there was nothing he could do to stop the onslaught. Staal scored two goals in the first 8:20 of the second period to complete the hat trick before getting a fourth at 15:30.
Roy and Mayers also had goals in the frame to make it 9-0 after 40 minutes, prompting some of the 9,182 fans at the Metro Centre to head for their cars early.
Green scored a power-play goal at 1:47 of the third period to go along with two assists.
Hordler was the last German to touch the puck before Canadian defenceman Dan Hamhuis inadvertently knocked it into his own goal at 8:40.
It was the only piece of good fortune for the German team, which was officially eliminated from quarter-final contention with the ugly loss.

So I'm home hibernating from this wild weather swing- we are watching WCSN- it' Ruutu v Gleason (Fin vs USA) and the US is lookin good- up until about 2 minutes ago, when everyone's most hated FINNISH player Olli the cheapshot artist Jokinen, just pulled the bushleage move of the tourney- laid out our Timmay, and our #42 has left the game, does not look good, and that jackass Jokinen got a 5 min major checking from behind and he's been tossed.

But, the damage has been done- I'm just crossing my fingers that Gleason is ok. He didn't look good at all. :fire:

OMG, y'all!! They just reviewed Finland's PPG, and the puck clearly worked it's way in from the side of the net--- didn't go-in between the pipes--- but they called it a goal...

Torts was pretty steamed. The announcer is pretty incredulous!

It's still 2-1, U.S.

SoCalcaniac
05-11-2008, 04:24 PM
CL- yeah, unreal that they 'reviewed' the goal and still came to that conclusion. Torts did look very familiar with the steam comin' out of his ears, lol.

Timmy has not returned- I emailed that guy that is blogging for USA Hockey, to find out if he knew what the injury was- he said he's waiting to hear back from the medical staff "downstairs".

This parade to the penalty box is insane. Every daggone touch is a penalty, and then they can't get the review right. Jeez. and Matt Greene is playing minutes that Timmay would be, and he's taking crazy penalties cause he's not used to the workload or something.

I think Robert Esche might find himself back in the NHL and out of the Russian Leagues, after this WC's. He looks really confident.

Match Penalty on the Albino Finn- he won't be playing in the next game, the jackass.

So, the loss was disappointing..... one can only wonder "what if," if they had reviewed that goal correctly.

At least the mistake has been acknowledged. From the IIFH website:
NOTE: The IIHF formally acknowledged after the game that Koistinen's shot had, indeed, entered the side of the net and should not have counted, and the video-goal judge will not be working for the rest of the tournament.

For those looking for youtubes.....

the Gleason hit from the first
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bS0hxMzkaY

Doesn't look that bad to me. Looks like Tim was just in a more awkward position than the first hit (which looked nearly identical in regard to what the Finn player did).

Don't get me wrong, I hate all the hits from behind, but I've gotten to the point that I just don't expect them to call it (and in the NHL, I bet they wouldn't have).

Hope Tim's okay.

I'm sure Team Canada will enjoy the Jokinen-less Finns. /roll

I'm still steaming from the whole damn thing. I had to chuckle listening to the replays on XM this morning and I just knew this was on TSN and kept saying "I wonder what the little man Pierre is saying" (lol) and he didn't fail me, he was rightfully going ballistic.

Thing about this video judge getting canned is - it's too friggin late, the damage is done. Why is there video review if you're not freakin' reviewing it??? I'm incensed. At least Selanne and the Coach Shedden for FIN acknowledged in the postgame the exact same thing. But it changes nothing because we got screwed.

So they play Norway at 1pm today. Backes is out after nearly killing that Finnish player, who didn't seem to want to put his stick down and fought with it in his hand .

The USA Hockey blog just mentions Timmay being seen in street clothes, no update on his health. Hmmm.

nccanes
05-12-2008, 07:47 AM
So, did they replace the net in that game? I mean, the thing either was, or became defective to allow a puck to go thru outside the posts.

I know the refs look at the nets before the game. Surely they replaced it right? Or can you just re-secure the net to the posts?

SoCalcaniac
05-12-2008, 07:53 AM
It was never mentioned if the net was replaced- things continued to move on- so I'll say no, it was not replaced.

But then they called about 50 million penalites yesterday so maybe during all that time the parade to the penalty box was going on, they actually changed the net. :roll Doubtful, but I'll go with that.

My hate for Jokinen grows even stronger. I hope my Timmay is ok :(

Nice that the goal judge is done, but like others have said, a little too late. Atleast they admitted that they screwed up, I'll give them that.

Look at Staalsy handling the media:

http://www.iihf.com/typo3temp/pics/03c56d7b11.jpg
The caption reads, "Eric Staal has thrived in lineup since move back to center." (well.... of course he would! :) )

Staal’s accomplishments are already impressive. Staal has already won a Stanley Cup and World Championship gold in his still young career. With these two accomplishments, Staal is two-thirds of the way towards the Triple Gold club.

Staal needs only an Olympic gold medal to be among the nineteen players holding that distinction. The next chance for Staal to reach that honor is likely the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Well, folks, at the end of the 1st period, it's 3-0, US over Norway. :)

:usa:

I forgot to watch until about 5 minutes ago, so I can't really comment on what things look like. Esche is in goal again. I did see Patrick Kane's easy PPG in the waning couple of minutes of the period. It looks like the US is out-shooting them 3:1.

Watching the 1st period highlights -- 2nd goal by Dustin Brown -- Boy! That guy's got a hard shot and quick release. Great slapper from in-the-slot. :eek2:

aaack- I've been on a video conference call for the last hour- and I just saw CL's post- I have been trying to wrap it up with these chatty people oh, for about 20 minutes!

At least we're rebounding nicely- I imagine the team is a little ticked- so that's good. And good that Torts put Esche back in, he deserved it.

Oh and great media pic of Staalsy......

You know Torts does have some way about him- I found that story about him leaving Halifax to fly down for his daughter's graduation the other day (college) very nice to hear. It just proves he's obviously a 'good dude' to his family- it's just everyone outside of that you feel for, lol.

One other thought...... It's so nice that Team USA doesn't put advertising on its uniforms. "Finnair" plastered across the helmets of the Finns, as well as that logo that looks like a 2nd set of eyes on the refs/linesmens' helmets, is really annoying to look at.

Woooo! it's 2-2 with 3 minutes left...Drew Stafford scores a shortie to tie about a minute after Phil Kessel scored on a beauty of a tip in (from Timmay! doing his best Nic Lidstrom immitation, lol)

Now we're in penalty trouble. Oh lord. I'd hate for them to come all the way back and those Finns score to win. This has been all bottled up junk for the whole game and they stuck with it. 5 on 3 for a few seconds now a 5 on 4.

Lots of Canes quotes in the recap

"Once again, they held on tough," said Canadian goalie Cam Ward (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8470320), who made 22 saves. "Up until the middle of the second period, they gave us a little bit of a scare."

The victory was especially important to the Canadian players because it will allow Eric Staal (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8470595) to rejoin the team. He missed Wednesday's game while attending a funeral for his grandfather in Thunder Bay, Ont., and will meet back up with his teammates in Quebec.
"He's a big part of this team and he's played extremely well for us," said Ward, who is also a teammate of Staal's in Carolina. "It's very unfortunate what happened to his grandfather at this time. We know that he's going to be fired up to come back.
"He did the right thing - family comes first. At the end of the day, we're just playing a game that we love."
Added Roy: "We needed a win for him. We wanted him to get another game."
Staal's absence opened up a spot for 18-year-old Sam Gagner (http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8474040) but he only ended up seeing a couple of shifts in the third period once the outcome was secure.
Still, he would have had a goal if not for missing a wide open net.

The Canada vs. Sweden game has started.

LeClaire in net, so it looks like Hitch is keeping the rotation going, and they're saving Cam for the possible gold medal game on Sunday. Aren't we proud of our Cam, who over this year and last's is 10-0 at the Worlds?

Well -- It'll be Canada vs. Russia in the gold medal game on Sunday!
:canada:

Final score in tonight's game: 5-4, Canada

It was probably the most competitive game that Canada has had to battle to win since the tourny started.

Our own Nick Wallin got a goal and an assist for Sweden. :)

Staal didn't rack up any points, but he had a sweet breakaway in the 1st period, but Lundquist made a great save.

I watched all of it, except for overtime (prior commitment), but the problems for Canada started in the 3rd period. They kind of went into a defensive shell, thinking the 1-goal lead was good-enough. The broadcasters were noting how much more agressive the Russians were in the 3rd, and then, bam!, they tied-it up. Cam played well. I feel badly for him.... sad.

I guess I need to get to WCSN and watch the thing. I heard alot of the chatter about it on XM and E informed me via text that they lost (we were enroute to Mellon Arena and they appeared to have it in hand 3-1 after 1)

I'm so upset for Cam. Heard Bob McKenzie on XM saying "well Cam Ward is no Roberto Luongo" and for the first time ever, I wanted to pop him in the face- cause I usually respect everything McKenzie says. Can someone please tell me what the hell Luongo has ever won??? It just boggles the mind that he gets automatic cred and he's done nothing.

Anyway, I guess I better read the papers and take a look at the game video. Totally disappointing.
