From CBS Sportsline.. I can't wait to meet Jaroslav Vasicek!
Offseason Update
If there's one thing that has made living easy for the 'Canes this summer, it's the knowledge that things can't get any worse. Carolina had a disastrous season after a Cinderella-like run to the Stanley Cup Finals, decimated by injuries and bad performances that saw them finish with the worst record in the league.
GM Jim Rutherford doesn't have the ability to blow it up and start over again, but he has made a number of personnel changes including bringing back veteran defenseman Glen Wesley, who was rented to the Maple Leafs at the trade deadline, and acquiring veteran defenseman Bob Boughner from Calgary.
The Hurricanes also added some spunk up front with forwards Marty Murray and Joey Tetarenko and saved some salary when they traded restricted free agent David Tanabe and Igor Knyazev, two young defensemen who were recent first-round draft picks. They went to Phoenix for Danny Markov, who will play in Russia this year.
But the biggest news for the Hurricanes this summer came at the draft when they grabbed center Eric Staal with the second overall pick. Staal was the top-rated player available, but the Penguins decided to go after hotshot goalie Marc-Andre Fleury with the first pick, leaving Carolina with the player they coveted.
The team still has a few key players to get under contract including Erik Cole and Jaroslav Vasicek, but will not have to go through arbitration with anyone.
