FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – August 6, 2003
HURRICANES SIGN FREE AGENT CHAD LAROSE
Right Wing Scored 61 Goals in 2002-03
RALEIGH, NC – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has signed free agent right wing Chad LaRose to a three-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
In 67 games during the 2002-03 campaign, LaRose (5’ 10”, 173 lbs.) led the Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers to the West Division title, notching 61 goals and 56 assists. He finished third in OHL scoring with 117 points, and his 61 goals ranked tied for second in the league, 20 more markers than the league’s fourth-best goal scorers. The Fraser, Mich., native added nine goals and eight assists (17 points) in 15 playoff games.
“Chad had a strong offensive year for Plymouth,” said Karmanos. “We look forward to him beginning his professional career in our organization this season.”
In his three seasons with Plymouth, LaRose scored 111 goals, earned 90 assists (201 points) and accumulated 116 penalty minutes in 152 regular-season games. Larose, 21, is scheduled to attend the Hurricanes’ rookie camp in Ottawa, Ont., in early September.
this table won't be quite right, but it's as close as I could manage, seeing's how it's 5:00. ;)

So, pardon my ignorance, but does this mean this kid was never drafted? Nice way to make your presence known with 61 goals.

Detroit let him go.. some snippets I found (after scrolling past a zillion "Chad LaRose was the player of the week/month/year" articles. He's a Right Wing, Shoots Right. I think he looks incredibly promising! Surprised Detroit let him go when they need some young'uns in a bad way! They'll realize that soon though I am sure ;)
Chad LaRose – The 5-foot-10 LaRose was the best forward throughout the tournament for the Red Wings. Paired with Pavel Datsyuk, LaRose led the team in goals (4) and continually impressed Detroit management with his tenacity and quickness. Detroit prospect coach, Barry Smith, used the speedy forward in all situations including several five-on-three penalty kills. LaRose must show Detroit management that he can maintain his high level of play during the main camp to earn a contract.
Chad LaRose is the OHL Western Conference team's leader in goals with 26, which ranks him as the OHL's leading goal scorer.
LaRose received the most votes in the Most Dangerous in Goal Area, Best Shot and Best Penalty Killer categories.
The OHL Coaches Poll provides team coaches with the opportunity to recognize players in several skill categories within their own conference. Coaches vote for each category within their conference and are not permitted to vote for players on their team.
Toronto - Jan 13, 2003 - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Plymouth Whalers' right winger Chad LaRose is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday January 12 after scoring five goals and three assists for eight points in three games.
LaRose, a 20-year-old native of Fraser, Michigan, opened the week with a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-2 win over the Kitchener Rangers on January 7. He followed up with two goals and an assist in a 4-2 win over the Windsor Spitfires on January 10 and concluded the week with a goal and an assist in a 4-3 win over the Sarnia Sting. LaRose helped the Whalers to three wins last week to bring them to within one point of the Kitchener Rangers for first place in the overall league standings.

Time to shine for Whalers' LaRose
Forward must impress NHL now or move on
October 10, 2002

Chad LaRose has one last chance to catch on with an NHL team, and he's determined to show he can help any team in any situation.
LaRose, a right wing for the Plymouth Whalers, is 20 years old and in his final season of eligibility in the Ontario Hockey League. If he doesn't make an NHL team by next year, he will be forced to play overseas or with another league.
"I could have gone over to Europe," LaRose said, "but I chose to come back and hopefully have a good year and then sign with someone else."
He's off to a good start. LaRose was named OHL player of the week Monday after scoring six goals and two assists in three games. He has 11 goals and four assists in six games.
LaRose grew up in Fraser and played for the Compuware midget team before joining Sioux Falls of the United States Hockey League for the 1999-2000 season. He scored 29 goals among 55 points in 58 games, and had 11 goals among 33 points the following season before joining the Whalers in January 2001. He finished the season with 18 goals among 25 points for Plymouth.
Last fall, he attended the Red Wings' rookie camp as a free agent, and led the first-year players in scoring before suffering a broken hand in Detroit's training camp. He was released by the Wings, returned to Plymouth and led the team in goals with 32. He finished second in scoring with 59 points.
LaRose returned to Wings camp in September and was again released.
Wings assistant general manager Jim Nill said LaRose had "a solid camp, but just not at the level he was last year. . . ."
Nill added: "He's got good hockey sense and good touch, a good skater and all that. He just has to learn to play with his size. You always want to get quicker and stronger. A lot of it is learning to jump in holes . . . get in, get the puck. Little things like that."
LaRose's size -- 5-feet-10, 170 pounds -- has always been the biggest knock on him. He has accepted the criticism, but prefers to focus on cardio activities to increase his stamina rather than choosing to bulk up.
"I'm more about my legs," he said. "I just want to get faster. I'm afraid if I was bigger I wouldn't be as fast or as skilled."
Plymouth is a comfortable setting for LaRose. His size hasn't hurt him on the Whalers, with whom he receives plenty of scoring opportunities thanks to their aggressive offensive style.
Coach Michael Vellucci said smaller players need to be phenomenal in some area to catch the attention of NHL scouts. LaRose has the scoring touch, but he wants to show he can do other things this year.
"If you don't have size, you better have something," Vellucci said. "He has heart, for sure. Nothing is going to stop that kid."
LaRose is ready for the extra work. "I want it all on my shoulders," he said. "You have to prove you're ready -- prove that when you're up 2-1, you can be the defensive player they want out there."
Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said LaRose's size doesn't preclude him from making an NHL team, so long as he focuses on improving.
"He's got to put everything else behind him," Waddell said. "One team might have cut him, but there's 29 other teams looking to sign players. The way the rules are changing, small guys play" in the NHL.
LaRose hopes he'll be one of them. If he doesn't make it, it won't be for lack of effort.
"I'm just the type of player that's never ever going to quit," he said.

I think signing Larose has created an interesting situation. There's the speculation about whether or not Staal will stay with the team this year- is he ready? Then we have this guy who is a scorer (whatever will we do with that? ), is fast, older, and has the motivation to make the team. We also have our current Lowell prospects who now have even greater competition against a relative unknown. Sure he's small but so is Martin St. Louis and I wouldn't mind having a bug of our own to help up that "Goals for". Since he's being invited to rookie camp, I don't think its an automatic assumption he's headed straight for Lowell. And to those who say he's a Detroit cast-off. Detroit has so much depth and a history of drafting well that I don't see that as a problem. I"m sure the size issue had something to do with Detroit not finding a fit in their system. We're the Canes!!! We like the underdog.

The problem is, we have no idea who will be here in Lowell. It would not surprise me to see him in Lowell this year.
I keep trying to think who could make Lowell this year and some names that could be either here or in Carolina are Defauw, Hereema, Kurka, Boulerice.
I am at a lost on this upcoming season. I am looking forward to FanFest up here on the 5th of October, just so I can put names and faces together.

I don't think just about anything would surprise me at this point. Wouldn't you just love to lift the little lid on JR's brain and see if the hamster has fallen off the wheel? :p
If you think you have no idea.. can you imagine what those poor guys are thinking? And how the waiver draft is going the impact this whole decision as well.

I hope camp is a dog fight. One that makes every player earn their way onto the team and know that there are players in Lowell just waiting for their chance. Sounds like good motivation ;)
And Guin, that new avatar is a good one!

This is a source of debate on another forum and I was just wondering what you guys think. Why, with the scoring preformance he has put up the past 3 years in the OHL, is this guy not invited to camp? I know Staal was mister high-ranking draft pick but if he's gonna be at camp why isn't LaRose? Any thooughts?

Maybe LaRose got added too late-- after the invitations went out. You know how hard it is to find a good caligrapher during wedding season? And the caterer just couldn't add another place setting....

(actually... I've felt like LaRose was brought in to shore up Lowell, with no intention of being looked at by the 'Canes right now.)

Yes, Larose is considerd a future AHL premiere player and leader-- again the only knock on him is size...or lack of it.
It is my understanding that LaRose has been invited to camp and will be there with the others-- Staal, Richmond, Ward, etc...

SHC - this made me think of a guy we had play here in Lowell a few years back before Carolina was here. His name was Craig Charron. Before he came to Lowell, wherever he played he had great numbers. When he came to Lowell he was the best player by far.
But when it came time for players to be called up, he never got the chance. His only knock on him? His height. 5'9"
I wish more teams would give smaller players a chance. With the way StLouis played this past year, teams might.

That's rookie camp, I believe. I was talking about real, life Hurricanes camp.
He's not that much smaller than Bayda. I'd like to see him get a shot too. But, I understand it is rare fo players to go straight from OHL to NHL. Still, he's got experience, maturity and numbers on Staal so I don't quite get that. I guess having a scout write about you makes all the difference in the world.

Ah boys will be boys......
Three Florida Everblades players were arrested in
North Naples early Thursday morning after deputies saw
one player hanging off the luggage rack and another
hanging out the rear door of a Chevy Blazer as it
headed down Immokalee Road.
Chad LaRose, who is under contract to the Carolina
Hurricanes, was arrested for Driving Under the
Influence after he failed a breathalyzer test.
Jared Newman, another Hurricanes prospect, was
arrested for disorderly conduct, as was Brandon
Coalter, a free agent signee for the Everblades.
Two other people were in the car at the time, but were
either not involved in the incident or not named in
the news broadcasts.
The ECHL Florida EverBlades take on the Mississippi
Sea Wolves tomorrow and Saturday at TECO Arena. There
is no word on the status of any these players for
those games.

Aaryn, I understand the "boys will be boys" cliche', but making light of people driving under the influence is never a good idea. Perhaps "boys will be boys" would be better suited for some stupid prank or bar fight, but this sounds these guys put their lives and the lives of others at risk.

A little more on the incident....
(Fort Myers-AP) -- Three members of the Florida EverBlades hockey team face charges after some partying in the Fort Myers area.
Lee County deputies say the players were arrested early yesterday morning when deputies spotted one of the men riding on the roof and another hanging out of the door of a Chevy Blazer. Forward Chad Larose is charged with driving under the influence. Forward Brandon Coalter and defenseman Jared Newman are charged with disorderly intoxication.
After the players and two other men left a bar early Thursday morning, deputies say four of the men got into the Blazer and Coalter jumped on the roof. They say LaRose drove down the middle of two lanes with Newman hanging out a rear door, causing two cars to swerve out the way.
Investigators say LaRose's blood alcohol level was measured just above the legal driving limit. EverBlades General Manager Craig Brush says NO immediate action is being planned against the players.
http://www.nbc-2.com/News/stories/040212-everbladesarrest.shtml
This link actually has an article and the news story from the local TV station with interviews from some of them. Coalter who has a seperated shoulder said he thought the police were a little rough, lol.
Sounds a little confusing - Larose says he passed the test and they "let them go", but there's a link to the arrest record. I didn't bother to read, listen, or look at the arrest record, but seems like someone is confused. Surprised that 2 of the players spoke to the media.
