What's cool about the photo - and you could compare it to any team photo in any decade - is that it's also a time capsule of the era, even though they're in uniform.

Judging from the hairstyles, the cut of the coaches/owners' suits & shirt collars, the baggy sweaters (pre-dating synthetics), I'd say this photo dates somewhere between 1918 to 1922.

I love photos like these and collect them-- purely to use for fashion history research.

CL: You're close on the date of the photo. The LOC has been posting shots taken by the Bain Photo Agency for awhile now. Most of them date from between 1912-1918.

They're not the Red Wings (or the Falcons as they were originally called). They didn't start playing until 1926 & this photo is about 10 years older than that. Most of the photos in this series were taken in New York City. Probably a local team?
