Enjoy your DVR, J.!! Here's CL's DVR tip-of-the-day:

This is one of my favorite features of a DVR: When you set the recorder to catch a favorite weekly show-- rather than chose "weekly" (which will always record on the same day, the same amount of time), choose "new" (and I don't know what kind of box you have, so the verbiage might be different)-- that way, if your show suddenly switches days or has a special 2-hour episode, you don't have to worry about remembering to re-set it. The DVR will look for and capture all new episodes, so you'll never miss an episode!! :D

Who else has a tip?

Hmm, does she have a TWC DVR or Tivo?

My TWC DVR doesn't really work as you describe, if you say "record series" it will grab it no matter when it comes on as well, but it'll catch repeats and such. You can select "new only" though.

My biggest suggestion is to "pad" the recording of live sporting events. They typically give 2.5 hours in the guides for sports events, but often a hockey game will go over. My TWC DVR used to ask me if I wanted to pad it by 30 minutes automatically, but I'm not sure the new s/w version does that (though you can still add that to the recording).

She has Dish, which we all know by now, is clearly superior. ;) hehe.

CONGRATS LTD!!! Bout time!! :)
Your life will never be the same. You'll want to sit down and watch that 8pm show, but you'll have to wait until 8:12 just so you don't have to watch commercials. You just Found Time!! ;)

LOL I'm surprised no one welcomed me to the 20th century.

You just Found Time!! ;)

Woooo hooooo - I've always wanted a TIME MACHINE !!!!!

Thanks for all the tips. And y'all will appreciate this. Yes, I'm still on TWC, at least for now. When the technician came out yesterday to deliver my DVR and set it up, I asked him about the NHL Network because we had ordered it but it was only working on one of our TVs even though we have multiple converter boxes. The technician said he'd call someone because he really didn't know how the different packages worked. I told him I just assumed that maybe he had some of the sports packages himself. He told me "Naw, man, I don't have this Time Warner bull***, I have DirectTV!"

I was pressured into it by a six-year-old.

"Why can't we flip through the commercials on our TV? All my friends can!"

My tip is to pad EVERYTHING you record -- I usually add a couple of minutes to the beginning and a couple of minutes to the end. (And when I record "Cold Case," I set it to record from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., because it NEVER starts on time while there's football on Sunday afternoons.)

The one thing I wish the DVR had that my last (and still working) VCR had -- the ability to fwd or rwd by time. Like, when I'm searching for said "Cold Case" episode, I wish there were a way I could forward by a certain amount of time (10 minutes, 20 minutes, whatever), rather than having to sit in a silent living room while I watch "The Amazing Race" on fast-forward until I find my show. Or does it have this and I just haven't figured it out?

Kermie - if my VCR ever did that (FF by time) I never knew how!

With TWC, you can jump fwd in 15 minute increments (well, you can jump TO the next quarter hour would be more accurate, you can jump to X:15, X:30. etc) by holding down the FF button. Eventually the little on-screen arrows will have a "|" next to it. (the old s/w was better imo, you could hit FF and then use one of the right or left arrows in the round circle thing and jump immediately).

Padding everything is great advice. ours as a standard is 3mins on regular shows. 60min default on sports.
You'll learn, the hard way most likely, which shows are apt to really run late.
Several Sunday night shows are always way late. When Big Brother was on, I had to let it go an extra hour, and still once, that wasn't enough.

I finally had a chance to use this just now. What a time-saver! Thanks, ncc!

Now that I'm in the DVR clique, I find the need to start off-loading some of my programs so that my son has enough space to record Spongebob. I need a DVD recorder. My DVR is HD but [thank you FSN] most of what I'm recording is standard def. What do y'all recommend? Doesn't need to be fancy, just functional.

TIA

Bumping this thread. Anyone have recommendations on a good DVD recorder? Should I go ahead and bite the bullet and go for one that records HD?
