RALEIGH, North Carolina (Ticker) - The Carolina Hurricanes re-signed left wing Jaroslav Svoboda to a one-year contract Monday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

In 48 games last season, Svoboda scored three goals and added 11 assists. He missed the team's final 25 games after suffering a dislocated shoulder at Dallas on February 11.

"Jaroslav plays an important role on our team and we are happy to have him signed," Carolina assistant general manager Jason Karmanos said. "Now healthy and relatively experienced in the league, we expect him to contribute even more to our team this season."

Svoboda, 23, was an eighth-round selection in 1998. He has five goals and 13 assists in 58 NHL games.

Oh my god-- you gave me a heart attack!

You realize that "resigns" is not re-sign, but resign as in quit, right?

So, your title startled me. . . . . not that losing Svoboda would be a big deal. . . . . hope he has a breakout year, though

Canes to keep Svoboda
Team hopes winger can 'produce more'
By LUKE DECOCK, Staff Writer

Two years ago, Jaroslav Svoboda was an invaluable part of the Carolina Hurricanes' journey to the Stanley Cup finals after a late-season call-up from the minors.
Last season, he began the season on the top power-play unit and had six points in the first 10 games before a 34-game goalless streak landed him back in the minors.

As for the coming season, the contract Svoboda, 23, will sign this week makes it unlikely the winger will be in the minors.

Svoboda agreed to terms Monday on a one-year, "one-way" contract that will pay him the same salary whether he plays in the NHL or in the minors.

While the base salary was not disclosed, Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford and Svoboda's Tampa-based agent Petr Svoboda (no relation to the Canes player) confirmed the deal will pay Jaroslav Svoboda less than his qualifying offer of $660,000 but could be worth more than that with incentives.

"He'll be on the team, but his training camp will be very important as to where he gets slotted in with the team," Rutherford said. "We're hoping that at some point, with the experience he's gained over these last couple years, he can produce a little bit more."

An eighth-round draft pick in 1998, Jaroslav Svoboda played in 10 NHL games at the end of the 2001-02 season and 23 playoff games as a member of the Canes' grinding third line along with Josef Vasicek and Martin Gelinas.

Last season, Svoboda had three goals and 11 assists in 48 NHL games before a dislocated shoulder in February forced him to miss the final 25 games.

"It wasn't a complicated contract," Petr Svoboda said. "They like Jaro, and he wants to have a better year. He's been here in Florida for almost two months working out hard every day."

The Canes still have three more restricted free agents to sign: Vasicek, Erik Cole and defenseman Danny Markov, who has threatened to play in Russia next season.

Wasn't he making $900,000 last year? I guess he took the pay cut to get the one-way deal. Good. $900,000 was way too much to be paying him....although, with incentives he'll probably end up with that much or more but at least they are performance based.

I heard (repeats heard), that is what the hold up for Colesy is the one-way deal, but lord knows why they would ever have to send him back down.....is my prejudice showing too much?

Where did you hear this? I know it was mentioned that it was part of the qualifying offer, but I haven't seen it in print since.

No offense to your sources, but I can't imagine that that is the hold up. :)

The N&O said on 8/4/03:

In Cole's case, he never had any intention of accepting the team's qualifying offer. The team's offer was a two-way deal, under which Cole would be paid a different salary in the NHL and the minors even though he has spent all of the past two seasons in the NHL.

which I read differently than guyute BTW.. I got the same impression as lovescolencanes, where guyute just said that was the qualifying offer they had to get out and that everyone knew he wouldn't sign it *shrug*

I wouldnt either, but I hate the word source, but she is a friend, is kinda a family member through marriage. But who knows, things might have changed since she talked them last. :D

I bet the hold up had something to do with the Markov deal. Now that that's resolved, I look for Cole's signing to be the next big news.

We Rock, oh yeah!

I'm soooooooooooo stoked!
