that's said, parise could push our plan forward a couple notches....

I think suter is far more likely
That scenario still leaves the Canes woefully short on top offensive talent and in the hunt for the number 9 spot.

Same here. There are still the variables in Sutter/Brent/Sutter and the kids (does Brandon have what it takes to be a legitimate 2nd-line center, does Brent have what it takes to take the 3rd-line with Brett Sutter taking 4th line) / (what might Dalpe et al show us with a full training camp under Muller)... but i'd only look to those possibilities as last resorts. Still, even if Parise doesn't happen, if PK is willing to open his purse, there are lesser options out there. Who does JR pursue in the forward ranks if Parise goes elsewhere?

The problem is that the UFA forwards under 30 are a sad crop, except for Parise.

Semin
Penner
Boyes
Stoll
Kostitsyn, A
Hudler
Jones
Stempniak
Moen
McClement
Mitchell
Parenteau
Tootoo
Burish
Campbell
Paille
McCloud
Winnick
Christensen
etc.

Finding a forward isn't the issue, it's finding a top line forward. Parise is it. PA Parenteau might be an option. He's going to end up with more than 50 assists. He may end up with more assists than he had points in any previous year. But he's only been a fulltime NHL player the last 2 years and he just turned 29. Boyes had back to back seasons with 43 and 33 goals, but that ended 3 years ago, his high since is 17. Hudler? How many guys voluntarily leave Detroit? You willing to take a chance with a headcase like Semin or a floater like Penner?

You need to stop the crazy talk right there.

I think JR sticks his toe in the water for Parise. If it gets too expensive (and I think it will, but I hope I'm wrong), my guess is that he will try to make a trade for a top line winger. He has this year's high first rounder and some prospects to bargain with. I hate to part with the high pick, but this team has missed the playoffs now for 3 years straight. The future is now.

Only problem is that the draft happens before free agency. So he has to make a decision prior to draft day. Use his high first rounder in a package in a trade for a top 6 winger, or take the chance on July 1st and go hard for Parise.

I think he goes hard for Parise and when that fails, he signs Penner.

JR can still trade that asset after he makes his pick. It won't eliminate the possibility of that factoring in.

If we sign Penner, regardless of who else we sign, I will be seriously bummed.

I'll be more than bummed. With friends who are LAK's STHers and cannot STFU about the woeful beyond belief Penner, I'll be inconsolable if this happens.

No thank you on Semin.

My belief is that Parise is the target, and Suter is right behind him, will stick with that for now.

I also think the Parise is the main target, but if we wind up signing Suter, that opens up a lot of possibilities for trading for a top six forward.

Good god, if people here were frustrated by Erik Cole I can't imagine the angst we'd see with Penner. Ugh.

Parise, and Suter if he makes it to July 1, will be a lot of teams' main targets. JR better be working on that backup plan..... (ugh, no Penner) I'll take a chance on Hudler, his was the draft pick we gave to Detroit go get AWard in 2001, so we get dibs, right?

When I first read that, I thought certainly that was typed tongue in cheek-- but I guess not. He's another reclamation project and I think JR does not have enough loyalty to spend among his STHers on that guy. Signing Penner would make picking up Kaberle the best off season move.

You can, but how often has a kid been drafted then traded a mere weeks later? I'd assume that a team would rather have the actual pick so they can pick who they want.

And in regards to Penner. It's not that I want to sign him, but it has JR written all over it. When you fail at the top free agent, go back to what you know and grab the guy who is the reclamation project

ETA: Just another reason why Parise needs to sign here. His comment on Tim Tebow's attention:

"I don't like it. Why does a back up quarterback need a press conference?"

is he even playing these days? TSN shows no stats for this season at the AHL level and an "undisclosed injured reserve" status. is that another way of saying "issues"? would explain why JR was quick to trade him.

Point made - JR sure as hell wasn't able to trade Paradis for Parise.
