My favourite thread to create. Happy St. Valentine's Day!
The Hurricanes have certainly improved since Muller came on board, and the season isn't over. They currently have the fewest losses in their L10 record of any team in the East (1); unfortunately, they also have the most OTLs in their L10 of any team in the East (4). Even so, it means they have only gone pointless in one of their last 10 games, and racked up 14 points. They're going to have to keep that up, however, if not improve upon it - at that pace, they would rack up 35 points in their last 25 games, giving them 88 points - and we all know how iffy a playoff berth is for a team with 88 points. I can't be bothered to actually look it up, but i'm going to wager to say this is the first time i've ever done this report where FLA were leading the division. Hm. Don't look now, but the Hurricanes actually have 3 games in hand against #7 Ottawa, and 1 game in hand against #8 Toronto, with 1 game head to head with each. And 4 games head to head with Florida.

Hurricanes finally played another game, so i do an update. Don't expect this every game, of course.
CAR are now tied with BUF in points with the same number of games played, however BUF have more wins. CAR sit only a point behind TBY and NYI, however both have a game in hand. MTL are 3 pts up, with CAR having the game in hand. All told, the worst-case scenario happened in the MTL-BUF game last night - MTL won in a skills competition (stupid slugs). As caveman pointed out, though, CAR still have enough head-to-heads with the teams that matter, however, so it's still possible. If the Hurricanes still want to make the playoffs, and i see no sign that they don't, then tonight would be a really good time to figure out how to beat the Islanders. ============================================== P.O.O.P. report - 18 February, 2012 ============================================== CONFERENCE (entire conference) 1. Playoffs are still a long shot, but consider this - at this moment, there is only a 3max difference between making the playoffs and overtaking FLA, who the Hurricanes still face 4 more times this year. Again, a long shot - but someone has to win the SE, and the Hurricanes still have the best L10 record. Contemplate that one, Bucky...
Now to pass beyond speculation, some facts - 1) If DAL defeat MTL (14th) tonight in regulation, CAR will pass MTL in the p.o.o.p. standings 2) NYI (12th) and BUF (13th) cannot both win tonight. CAR do not have enough wins to overtake either at this time, however 3) TBY (11th) play tonight 4) WPG (10th) play tonight 5) WSH (9th) are playing their worst hockey in a long while, and i'm not just talking last night ============================================== P.O.O.P. report - 21 February, 2012 ============================================== CONFERENCE (entire conference) 1. Yeah, the key right now looks to be that we're 8 points back of Florida, with 4 games to play against them. Sweep them (yeah! though we're 0-1-1 in the first 2...) and we'd be tied, though Florida has 2 games in hand. (And we'd have to pass Winnipeg, Washington, and Tampa, too...)
We have: 4 more games vs. Florida -- we trail them by 8 points, they have 2 games in hand -- best case: tied, they have 2 games in hand 1 more game vs. Washington -- we trail them by 6 points, they have 1 game in hand -- best case: we trail by 4 points, they have 1 game in hand 2 more games vs. Tampa -- we trail them by 1 point, they have 2 games in hand -- best case: we lead by 3 points, they have 2 games in hand 2 more games vs. Winnipeg -- we trail them by 7 points, and we have 1 game in hand -- best case: we trail by 3 points, we have 1 game in hand That's the divisional picture, and it's not terribly rosy. But it's not impossible, darn it. Still, the temptation has to be strong to deal Spacek and Allen for picks/etc. (And Ruutu for that matter, if talks aren't getting anywhere...) For the "p.o.o.l.", Columbus has #30 on lock down, and Edmonton is making a strong case for #29. Not much room between 17-27. |

A few things went right for CAR last night, while others went wrong. It all changes with each day, however. Simply put, if CAR take care of their own business, they don't have to rely on other things going right. But each 'right' gives them a little extra cushion.
Thanks to DAL, CAR have passed MTL in the p.o.o.p. standings. This is probably the first time since about the first month of the season that CAR wasn't in dead last. WPG lost, albeit in OT. BUF beat NYI, but at least that one didn't go to OT, which puts CAR a mere p.o.o.p. behind NYI with the same number of games played. Now just imagine if NYI's sweep over CAR didn't happen... Only two games in the East tonight, WSH @ OTT and BOS @ STL (the latter not being one that will have much impact on CAR making the playoffs, i'm afraid). As for the former, of course both teams last played on the same night, WSH being shutout by CAR and OTT shutting out NYI. Straight up, CAR will most likely have to overtake one of these teams to make the playoffs. An OTT win would be nice, but i'm mainly just hoping whoever wins does it in regulation. ============================================== P.O.O.P. report - 22 February, 2012 ============================================== CONFERENCE (entire conference) 1. No changes in the rankings, so no rankings update here. Games tonight, though -
PHI @ EDM MIN @ FLA SJO @TOR TBY @ WIN ANA @ CAR PHI - doesn't much concern us here. Mathematically it can happen, but realistically, uh, no. FLA - even with 4 remaining head-to-heads, CAR will need some other things to fall into place in order to overtake the Panthers. Tonight could be the start of that as each team take on Western Conference teams fighting to make the playoffs. TOR - another of those teams CAR will likely have to overtake, and one taking on a stronger Western Conference team than either FLA or CAR. TBY/WIN - they can't both win, right? Just hope someone does it in regulation. CAR - According to sportsclubstats, CAR need a 15-5-2 record from here on out just to have a 53.3% chance of making the playoffs - but i think we'd all like to see better odds than that. Which means they really need a win, so hopefully no Tim Peel tonight. |

Winnipeg slaughtering TBY at the moment - we pick up 1 pt - so although I don't think we move up in the p.o.o.p overall, we are only 2 points behind TBY (but they have 2 games in hand). Now we just need to go 15-5-1 to have >50% odds of making the playoffs.

Unfortunately you're right - we don't move up in the p.o.o.p. standings. Even worse, we drop.
It was just a simple SOL, but it may have left the Hurricanes SOL. Down to a 2.7% chance on sportsclubstats.com and, as mentioned, back to last place in the p.o.o.p. standings. Each loss, whether it comes in regulation, overtime, shootout, or puckhandling around pylons, is really a nail in the coffin at this point. I'm truly hoping that everything JR does or doesn't do between now and Monday is for the team moving forward and not for their typical late-season charge, as it isn't worth investing the future on such an unlikely occurance. If Allen and Spacek are in the plans for next season, sign them... but don't keep them around just to fill Pitkanen's spot for another week so we can keep the charge going - get something for them while you still can (i'm tempted to throw Jokinen into that statement as well right about now...). 3 important games tonight as the 3 teams ahead of CAR in the p.o.o.p. standings all take on toughter opponents (well, perhaps not in the case of MTL and WSH). CAR can potentially be sitting in 14th tomorrow, 1 pt behind BUF, tied with NYI in pts but with 2 fewer wins, and 2 pts up from MTL. Or they can still be in 15th and even further behind in wins (they already have the fewest in the entire conference). You think i'm all gloom and doom now, just imagine if they hadn't gotten the point last night... ============================================== P.O.O.P. report - 24 February, 2012 ============================================== CONFERENCE (entire conference) 1. sportsclubstats now has CAR with a 51% chance of making the playoffs if they can go 14-4-2. Whatcha think?
Despite the nails that have been hammered into the coffin over the past 2 games, the point still exists that the Hurricanes did pick up 2 pts and are sitting in 14th, ahead of the Montreal Coleberles in the p.o.o.p. standings. Had they won those games, they'd be sitting in 14th, ahead of the Montreal Coleberles in the p.o.o.p. standings. The difference is that they'd be sitting 1 pt behind BUF, TBY, and NYI instead of 3, and 6 behind the 8th-place Capitals instead of 8. Not trying to resurrect any dying hopes, but the fact of the matter is that they haven't really lost that much ground. Problem is that they didn't have much ground left to lose, and they now have even less. They still need to win somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 of their remaining games, and they only have 20 opportunities to do that. ============================================== P.O.O.P. report - 26 February, 2012 ============================================== CONFERENCE (entire conference) 1. CAR currently sit in 14th, tied with NYI but losing the tiebreaker due to fewer wins (they still have the fewest wins in the East). If they fare better than NYI tonight, they will jump into 13th, and depending on what happens in other games, could feasibly be sitting a mere point behind TOR and 2 points behind TBY & BUF. The best they can manage against the teams that matter (FLA, OTT, WSH) is, respectively, 11 points down, 11 points down, and 8 points down. Of course, they lose the tiebreaker to all of those teams as well (due to having the fewest wins, they also lose the tiebreaker to every other team in the East), so let's go ahead and call it 12, 12, and 9.
On the flipside, CAR cannot be surpassed by MTL tonight, but can finish the night a mere point up, and sitting 15, 13, 10, 7, 7, 7, 6, and 2 points behind the teams above them - and, again, we'll go ahead and call those numbers 16, 14, 11, 8, 8, 8, 7, and 3 because of the tiebreaker thing. According the sportsclubstats, CAR can still finish with a more-than-50% chance of making the playoffs if they only lose 2 more games in regulation with an additional 3 in OT/SO - but that largely depends on what happens at the top of the Southeast. Tonight's game features the two teams least-likely to win the division - but it's one that CAR really need to win if they want a legitimate shot at winning said division. Yes, i know this is all highly unlikely at this point, but i will continue this report until even the slim mathematical hopes are silenced. ============================================== P.O.O.P. report - 03 March, 2012 ============================================== CONFERENCE (entire conference) 1. 17 games left, needing 27 or so points out of the possible 34. 17-0 does it, 0-0-17 doesn't. 10-0-7? 11-1-5? 12-2-3? 13-3-1? Yeah...

(Note -- MBR starts these threads. And I figured that by "Yeah..." it was pretty clear what I thought of the chances.)
And nccanes -- after years of LGCing there's no question that often my first thoughts on a Canes game or trade or signing is "what is everybody going to say at LGC!?" (Though... one win down, so... 11-2-3... Hahaha...) |

Oh sure, blame me for starting these things. Why i oughta...
Last night helped the cause, albeit minutely. Tonight could do the same, or of course it could hurt it severely. sportsclubstats.com now has CAR needing to go 12-3-1 to have a 50% chance. "So here you go, guys - pick up 25 out of a possible 32 points over the rest of the season, and we'll flip a coin to decide if you're in or not. Anything less and you're toast." So, uh, yeah. CAR can gain 2 points on BUF & TOR tonight, but not enough to catch either. But am i a moron to hope TOR take down PIT anyway? Sure it'll microscopically hurt CAR's playoff chances, but i wouldn't mind a few pissed off Pens fans in the world... ============================================== P.O.O.P. report - 07 March, 2012 ============================================== CONFERENCE (entire conference) 1. Yeah, missing the playoffs would be more tolerable if we can contribute to Buffalo missing them as well. (And that last game at Florida, boy, would love to pay them back for April 2008.)
Canes were 40-31-11 for 91 points last year and missed the playoffs by losing the last game as well, vs. Tampa. So I wouldn't mind doing Tampa's cause some injury on Thursday. That's right. Take 'em all down with us. If I can't be optimistic, I'll be bitter. |

Caveman, I know we've both been around here awhile, so I'm hoping you "got" the spirit and the context behind my post yesterday. I share your enthusiasm, not quite as unbridled, but close.

Yeah, no worries! But just for the record, I don't actually think any of this will happen. (I mean, I'm not actually crazy!) Doesn't stop me wanting it to happen, though. (Especially that part about beating Florida in Florida for the last game of the year to crush their hopes...)
