If the Hurricanes were worth a damn in OT/SO, they could very easily be in the middle of that WPG/BUF/TBY/TOR knot, perhaps even on top of it. That's still a little shy of playoffs, but with 13 games left, 4 points would certainly be an easier hill to climb than 9.

They really need to win out the rest of the season now, but OT no longer matters - the wins need to be in regulation, especially in the 4-point games. I don't know if even that is enough at this point, but there might be enough head-to-heads to let them squeak in. Crunch time, though... tied with 2 minutes left in one of those 4-pointers and i'd be looking for the right time to pull Ward - can't afford to give any of those teams even a single point.

The whole ROW thing kind of annoys me, to be honest (as does the whole SO thing to start with), but thanks to it, CAR remain ahead of NYI due to 5 of NYI's wins coming in the SO (just imagine if CAR could do such things - the possibilities boggle the mind...)

The Hurricanes aren't much closer to making the playoffs than they were 2 days ago, but somehow it's more fun doing this report after a win. They still need about, oh, say 11 more.

Two games in the East tonight. Another MTL win over OTT would be nice (Cole could even high-five the official again), preferably again in regulation. A WPG win over WSH would probably be a good choice as well, but all told the most important thing is that whoever wins does that in regulation. Both of these teams getting points could be slightly detrimental...

New addition - p.o.o.p. points. 9th-place team (WPG) has a max-pts of 98 and max-ROW of 41; all teams that can top 98 pts can also match 41 ROW, making the clinch-line 99 (this line will reduce as the 9th-place team's max-pts drop). Some of my p.o.o.p. numbers were wrong yesterday. They're fixed today. Cutline is down to 97. CAR still certainly on the outside, but WSH & WPG both losing last night certainly helps matters. And sportsclubstats now has them back to over 1%!

BUF & TBY can't both win tonight, which is good. They can't both lose, either, which kinda sucks. Hopefully whoever wins does it in regulation. TOR @ BOS - this would be a good night for the Bruins to get back whatever mojo they can for a night. And WSH @ DET could potentially be a good thing.

Ah, makes perfect sense. I guess I was clinging to the fact (dream) that we were actually rising in the standings, but I have always actually preferred this method.

The fun thing about doing it this way is that instead of one team rising after win, the other team drops. Even a 10-game win streak won't cause a team to rise - it's the other teams dropping that'll cause that to happen.

Which is also why CAR can climb in the standings over the next 2 days - they're idle, so all they can do is watch the teams around them plummet. Kinda increases the joy of seeing other teams lose, eh?

Now CAR are in 11th. All told, a good night last night, though WSH defeating DET set up a bit of a hurdle. FLA, meanwhile, have a fairly firm grip on the Southeast that will take more than our two head-to-heads to shake.

CAR have jumped in the standings and we'd all love to see them jump further - but now they face a gap. For some perspective, they're closer to falling back into last place than they are to jumping one more spot. Still not impossible, of course. PIT, PHI, and NJE wins tonight will help a bit, but i'm still going to find it mighty tough to pull for the Penguins.

As expected, Pittsburgh smacked down Winnipeg dropping their max points to 94 and putting us a point behind them if we can beat FL tomorrow.

Florida beat Philly - so hopefully they will be good and tired from that effort when they come here.

And last but not least, we need the Montreal Coles' to beat the slugs to also drop them to 94.

This would be an awesome time for our 1st 4-game win streak of the season...

It's not going to be daily updates, but i'm burdened with too many consecutive days (or at least mornings) off this week. Just don't expect updates over the weekend...

3 games last night, 2 of which went right for CAR. WPG down, bringing the jump to 3 pts. OTT down, bringing that mountain down to 9 (do i really expect this one? of course not, but it's closer now than it was this time yesterday...). And FLA up, taking that one pretty much into the realm of impossibility. But then, we all knew winning the division was going to be uphill all the way. 2 games that matter tonight, as IceSun mentioned. A BUF loss lowers the clinchline, which helps every team not from Buffalo.

It annoys me when i find mistakes in previous postings of this report, but i'm just this guy, you know. Anyway, caught another one and fixed it. I'll start listing the remaining games within the next few days. If anyone needs ideas for chants tonight, however, i hear that 'Jordan's better' causes good things to happen...

Blast it, another slip - PIT now have 96 pts, not 94, bringing their p.o.o.p. down to 1 pt (the only reason they haven't clinched is because BUF have a 2-1 series advantage over them). 1 pt either way, though, and they'll be in.

We need a little help from our friends, but who knows? I'm not getting my hopes up, but it never hurts to "dream big".

Yeah, it's pretty close to hard to imagine Florida not being able to get 6 points in its final 10 games (even if we swept them in our two remaining head to heads) so the division is way out of even far-fetched scenarios (like we win all of our remaining 9 games for example).

Ottawa needs just 7 points in its remaining 8 games (1 head to head with Carolina) to stay ahead of us, and while that is a tall serving of help we're ordering it seems more likely than Florida slipping that far, it's pretty far out there, so 7th is out of reach.

So... 8th. 7 points is a lot of ground to make up in 9 games.
