CAR took care of their own business last night, but got no help elsewhere. Unfortunately they're really needing both at this point. They need to pass 3 more teams to make the playoffs, and they sit 3, 5, & 7 behind the 3 most-likely at this point. Unless, of course, FLA & OTT's most-recent games are the beginnings of full-frontal collapses.
8 games on the slate for tonight, but only one that can really help CAR. Really need for PHI to do their business a little better tonight, eh? Lots of big games Friday, though, with BUF visiting conference-leading NYR, WPG visiting WSH, OTT visiting MTL, and FLA hosting EDM. Hurricanes need to make sure they don't take the league's last-place team lightly and hope something else helpful happens somewhere. At the very least, WSH and WPG can't both win. Saturday's going to be a big night as well, and then a couple big games Sunday. Now all we have to do is improve our destiny by beating Columbus Friday and then Detroit Saturday while getting all the help that MBR mentions.

Ovi scored 26 seconds in and that was all it took for Washington to get a point. At least Lavi's boys got the shootout win to hold the damage to one.

With PHI unable to defeat FLA and having to go to a SO to defeat WSH, i'm starting to wish CAR had about a half-dozen remaining games against them. Anyway, WSH get a point, which puts CAR a point closer to catching them but also puts WSH a point closer to clinching. WSH now have 8 games remaining, meaning they'll have to lose 3 in regulation (or 6 more in OT/SO) and CAR will have to run the table (in which case CAR will probably still lose the tiebreaker, so add another WSH loss there somewhere).
Nothing else from last night matters aside from TBY (who CAR only have to worry about if they can't take of their own business), so we turn to tonight, where every single game being played affects CAR's playoff chances. CAR, along with every team they can catch aside from BOS, play, two of those teams facing off when WPG visit WSH. --- NJE are so far up that we all know it's not really happening (even if the math says it can), and a win over the imploded Leafs at home will pretty much assure that. Keep in mind as well that TOR are only 3max behind CAR. --- FLA are almost over the mountain as well, though their being 4 points behind NJE and the fact CAR still have a game against them give CAR at least an outside (if unlikely) fighting chance there, particularly with the way the last CAR-FLA game went. If they defeat EDM at home tonight, however, that will certainly complicate matters. --- OTT visit MTL. Straight up, we need MTL to fare better against them than they did against BUF, or OTT will be pretty much out of reach as well. And even if the Habs defeat them, it's still uphill all the way. --- WPG @ WSH. Once again, the good news is they can't both win, while the bad news is they can't both lose. WSH are going to be comsiderably tougher to catch than WPG, so a WPG regulation win is CAR's best bet (as they're likely going to have to catch them both). If WPG win in regulation, CAR will be 4max behind WSH and 3max behind WPG; if WPG win in OT/SO, 5 & 3; if WSH in OT/SO, 6 & 2; if WSH in regulation, 6 & 1. And I've realized after absorbing the recent posts, it's really kinda IMPOSSIBLE for me to pull for the Canes to accomplish a miracle AND pull for FLA to get knocked out by us on game 82. Seems like WASH is the only real chance to knock off FLA, but we need to catch WASH to sniff 8th. BTW, yes I know this is all crazy talk. I'm just entertaining myself.

I'm heading out for Charleston early in the AM, so i may or may not have time to update before i go. Not that there's much positive to say, beyond the fact MTL beat OTT and TOR beat NJE. Hey, whoopie-$hit.
We all knew it was pretty much impossible, but the team was playing so hard and so well for so long that it was tough not to get a wee bit excited about it. I'd say that about does it, however.

I dunno. Had to figure the canes wouldn't run the table; that they'd drop one game along the way. But didn't figure it would be Columbus... Still, if the Canes 3 and the Caps lose 3, still plenty interesting.
On the positive side, tickets for the remaining games got a lot cheaper on Stubhub so I can take the kid to 1-2 more games yet this year.

Updating just because.
Last week CAR were in a situation where they needed to pretty much win out and hope for help to slip past 3 teams, the most likely being WPG, WSH, and BUF (indeed, the other possibilities are long gone by now). WPG have proven quite catchable, and CAR will do just that with a ROW tonight. WSH and BUF, on the other hand, have distanced themselves nicely; again, likely to the point CAR wouldn't have been able to catch them even had they gone 2-0 last weekend. If BUF win tonight, CAR cannot catch them and will be eliminated from playoff contention. If CAR lose, they cannot catch WSH. If both happen, CAR could find themselves in 13th and able to finish no higher than 10th. Best-case after tonight, CAR sit in 11th place (still behind TBY due to HTH-tiebreaker), still grasping at that last straw. I mean, it's possible that only 1 SE team (FLA) is going to make the playoffs, and the Canes may still end up as the division basement. Still LOTS to prove next year.

And that's it.
Things definitely turned around under Muller, but even under him this team had 23 wins and 30 losses - some of those losses just took a little longer than 60 minutes to get to. 3-15 in OT/SO situations, if i'm not mistaken. Gonna take a little more work. Hopefully we have a season next year so we can see it happen...
