Default Dreger says Canes plan to go after Parise and Suter

Via Twitter
Quote:
Carolina Hurricanes are ready to leap into contending status. Expect Canes to be strong bidders for Parise\Suter...if both are UFA's.
Quote:
Canes have core character players. Need star winger to play with Staal + would consider top d-man. Ownership is on board for right add.

Dreger is an extremely credible source. Lets hope they get to UFA and this is real. Canes can woo with all the young talent, Muller, and the value of their money here v. the big cities.

I'd be jazzed to here we were seriously going after either one of them, but both. wow.

*puts fingers in ears* LalalalalalalalaIcan'thearyou! I haven't seen much of the Devils lately, but I admit that I fantasized about Parise in a Canes sweater during the Olympics.

Dreams ciould come true for us if we got ZP. It's well known that JR was "hoping" to land Parise after he picked our Capt in 2003..they coveted him next to #12.

It's also well known he was/is very close to John MacLean & was pretty distraught when the Devils fired him. Took it very hard. Could be our bargaining chip.

I think I will fall to pieces if either happens.

I will be thrilled if we signed Parise.

Good to hear of his relationship with Maclean. Could be a plus for us.

Must not get hopes up...must not get hopes up....ehh, too late. Come on Parise!

Also, never thought about the Maclean connection. Hope we use every resource and connection we have.

He needs to wine and dine Parise, show um around town and drill in his brain what an awesome place Raleigh is.

He should know how passionate we fans are with beating his team in the playoffs a few times

That sounds great, but don't think he can do that until Jul 1 can he?

I'm relatively free in the meantime and would be happy to wine and dine ZP on JR's behalf.

If NJ doesn't re-sign him, beyond the obvious big market candidates I think it comes down to us and Minnesota (his home-state).

Does he want to play with Staal or Dany Heatley?

I rest my case (and choose to ignore the good guys in Minnesota (Cullen, Koivu).

And Suter is nothing to sneeze about..

Wonder if anyone has done any kind of calcs on how much revnue that ads? Our attendance is at 15,856 avg. If each seat went up $2 (I really have no idea if that's the avg), that's about 1.3 million more in revenue?

Then you back out the cost of the free F&B, which I realize is not the face value, but whatever the lost markup is.

Makes the price hike seem kinda....nothing significant (unless my math is really bad or my per/seat hike is off).

FWIW, my guess is this is a wash with killing the STH gift program. Maybe even better when you take away all the fulfillment costs that went with that.

It seems like JR would have to invest a ton of money in few players to reach the floor next season. Assuming there is a next season...

According to Michael Smith's twitter Q&A, he clarified that the Canes may go after Parise OR Suter, not AND.

Of course, he's not the GM, but thought it was worth noting.

Here's his tweet:

Quote:
Michael Smith ‏ @MSmithCanes
Not both. Maybe one. RT @hurricanes1210: any chance we try to sign both suter and Parise this summer?

Also have to wonder if either of those guys or any big name would want to come here, with where the Canes have been for the last 6 years!

Well, let's see.
  • An organization that is widely considered one of the best and classiest and who knows how to treat their players.
  • A town that is a fantastic place to raise a family, has unbelievable weather, a small town feel with most of the amenities of a big town, and a loyal, devoted and loud fanbase.
  • A team with what most consider one of the top goalies in the league, top centers in the league, top young defensive centers in the league, top young defensemen in the league who may be in the running for this year's Calder, and last year's Calder winner.
  • One of the most promising, talked-about young coaches in the league and a coaching staff and front office made up of respected former players and Hall of Famers.
  • A team that two of the talked about names in free-agency this summer have already decided to re-sign for rather than test the waters.
  • An expansion team that has had more success in their first decade plus of time in this city (3 Conference Finals, 2 trips to the Finals, and a Stanley Cup) than almost any other.
Yeah, my god, it's amazing we can get anyone to sign here.

Plus, the added bonus that Parise and Staal are good friends and Parise supposedly liked playing under MacLean.

Not everyone can be Detroit but we're not too damn shabby. The last thing in the world that I'm worried about is attracting players. Paying for them is a different matter.

SHC, This may be the best post ever.

I would add that nobody should have gone to Pittsburgh or Chicago a few years ago by this same logic (years out of playoffs)
