Default Game Thread ..... vs. New Jersey, 3/31/12

Well, guys.... it's really is only for pride, at this point. Frankly, I'm kind of amazed that with the start to the season they had, that the Canes weren't mathematically eliminated a few weeks ago!

Fan Appreciation week continues, with the annual team poster giveaway tonight.

It's a rainy Saturday-- great time to get those indoor chores done!

Puck-drop at 7:00PM

See ya at the PNC! (I wonder if they're pissed they can't have orange seats?!)

Yea...this is it. Truly only for pride.

They need to bounce in a big after last night. Especially at home in front of their fans and ESPECIALLY on jersey off the back night.

Hopefully the sun is out later. The scene yesterday outside PNC was so nice it reminded me of the playoffs....which for us was so long ago.

See y'all there.

If you had told me in November that the Canes would be hin the playoff hunt until the 78th game, I'd have called for the nice young men in the clean white suits.

At least we get to see future Cane Zach Parise tonight...

I like where your head's at, Andy! Would be fun to see some posterboards welcoming Parise to his future home. What would make me laugh would be to hear him cheered wildly every time he touches the puck.

I just hope there isn't a letdown after being officially eliminated last night.

Mr Skinner needs to start to grow up a little. Whining at the referee gets you nowhere but a nice seat back in the penalty box.

Can't get the game where I am - what was he whining about?

Funny, I started the season thinking I would put Skins on my red jersey, but right now I'm leaning toward Faulk.

ETA - never mind - read Chip's tweets - 3-0 jeez-not sad to be missing this

The team certainly isn't giving Parise any reason to think "Wow, they are only a player like me away from being a serious contender!"

Skinner should be a healthy scratch Tuesday. Teach him a lesson Muller.

I hope everybody gave Parise a warm round of applause when he scored the queso goal.

Oh, wait...

From the anthem on all I could think was "Parise is never going to sign here now."

The Hurricanes certainly didn't do themselves any favours in the Parise sweepstakes, that's for sure. Oh well, maybe JR can find another reclamation project who nobody else is willing to gamble on...

Something came up at the last minute and prevented me from going to the game tonight. It kind of makes up for not winning the Megaball lottery last night.

Talk about rolling over. I was able to give my tickets to somebody else to use. They will probably never go to another game.

Skinner, grow up. That was a punk move. Don't be a punk.

If that wasn't the crappiest game I've ever seen at the RB... oops.... PNC area, it's pretty darned close. In the top 5.

We left with 5 or 6 minutes left, after we both realized that we more interested in our phones. I was playing Words with Friends, and Mr CL was following the NCAA tourney.

When was the last time they didn't phone it in on "shirts-off-their backs" night?

I bet the Alumni game'll be a heckofalot more entertaining!

I'm not betting on the Alumni game, but I have no expectations on that game, and had many on these.

A few things...

Please somebody, do something to get Skinner a mentor. Those sequences/penalties...not cool. Unacceptable.

I get that it's hard to get going when the reality sinks in that "it's over" but your damn sure better pretend. That was beyond horrible.

Anyone lays thison Boucher is truly on crack. Muller wa talking in pre game quotes about him being a guy "guys want to play hard for" well I'd hate to see what they'd do if they didn't want to play for him.

Marty Brodeur got his easiest shut out in this life. He was sleeping in the net.

That was the fastest Jersey Off The Back dealio ever. Hoyle blew threw the names & got the hell out. They shoulda ran with shame.

A happy aside...Ray Whitney scored his 1000th & 1001 points tonight. Folks thought it would be next year, but he did it. Now that's a Huuricane I miss a ton.

Was torques listening to Forslund on aftermath "guaranteeing" a far better effort in OTT on Tues ...well Johnny, that's all well & good for everyone in OTT. Thx.

Since this game was a stinker, can I do a little crowd kvetching? It's the same kvetching I did when I posted this on FB, so apologies to those of you seeing this twice.

Attached is a picture with 2 images from tonight's game. The top one shows how much space there is between my fat knee and the seat in front of me.
So then WTF does every guy sitting in front of me have to use my knee as an elbow-rest? It's annoying because I paid for this seat and I feel I own the airspace in front of it and he is invading my airspace.

It's creepy in the first place because I don't know these guys. It's creepy in t
he second place because they don't seem to notice or be bothered by the warmth of my knee against their elbow. (But it. weirds. me. out.) But it's especially creepy because the guy is usually doing it to put his arm around his girlfriend/wife and I just don't think it's right to be all couple-y and involve my knee in the transaction!

Guys, if you can't put your arm around your significant other without involving the body parts of the person behind you, don't do it. I don't understand why you need to it at a game, anyway, but please leave me out of it.

I completely understand. I had to tell the girl behind me (for the second time this season) to remove her feet from the top of the back of my seat where her toes were digging into my back. What kind of person puts their feet on the back of a seat with somebody sitting in it??

KB I've had that happen to me a few times this season. I can't stand it so I tell them that since we are already nice and close, I'd perfer to not have his arm laying across my knees. Agreed, if you want to get all cuddly with your SO, go to a movie or stay home and cuddle on the couch.

On to the game. Marty got the easiest shutout of his life. Dude could have taken a nap and still gotten a shutout.

Saw Jokinen got demoted to the 4th line, but if you ask me, if anyone should have gotten a demotion it should have been Skinner. Muller and team need to start showing that kid some tough love or he's going to get out of control. That unsportsman penalty from him turned the tides in big way. I thought the team looked like they wanted to play, then he took the retaliation penalty, devils score. Then his butt gets right back in the box for running his mouth. Devils score. Deflating especially still trying to cope with realizing that your playoffs hope were gone less than 24 hours ago.

Oh well. They got one more game at home to save face. And I expect them to come out fighting. If you lose fine, but don't make it easy on the other team.

They didn't score while Skinner was in the box so I have a hard time blaming his penalties for the downward spiral. I think that was a full-on team-effort.

And I honestly think several guys on this team could use a good knot in their ass when it comes to allowing other players to get under your skin and losing your sh*t. (see: Gleason Friday night).

But, the point on Skinner is certainly valid. I need to go listen again since this is only based on what I heard on the radio on the ride home but, I was not happy with Skinner's post-game comments. He didn't seem to willing to take much responsibility for his little meltdown and just kept saying he couldn't comment because he didn't want to get "in trouble." How about your comment is "I need to learn to keep my mouth shut". I doubt that would incur a fine. Sort of annoying that you can hold your temper to save yourself a fine but you're willing to risk blowing the game for a tantrum.

Maybe Gary Roberts is not who this kid needs to be spending summers with.

BRILLIANT & you're on to something. This is the funniest thing so I had to post and laugh since there is not much to laugh at about this one.

I'm trying to move on from this game, but Lord, it's always worse the day after-- letting it stew in your brain.

To Kermie's post about the too close for comfort touching thing, Ewww & whatever happened to personal space? We sit in the last row and with the new seat config, hubby and his 6'4 inch self seems to bump right up to the back of the seats in front of us, and it personally bothers him because when someone sits there, his knee could bump someone in the head. He prefers to stand anyway, and since nobody is behind us, it's not an issue but definitely could be a problem for others, so we're considering searching for leg room at select a seat. The guy that sits next to me (26 gamer) seems to not have an awareness with personal space and regularly sits legs spread to touch my knees, and then rests both arms wide (past the armrests) and I'll regularly say, please stay in your space & he thinks it's funny, (still) but complies.

Skinner took an interference penalty (stupid retaliation) at 19:17 of the 1st and the Devils scored at 19:38. Skinner comes out of the box, drops an F-bomb on the ref and it's back to quiet time for the ute. Devils score again at 1:44 of the 2nd which was 6 seconds after Skinner was released from detention. Two goals caused by Skinner's stupidity.

It was a full-on team lack of effort. My wife was at the game and texted me that zombies had stolen the Canes sweaters and were playing, but Skinner was the head zombie last night. Muller should have stapled him to the bench and made him watch the rest of the game with Cam.

Maybe Muller let Skinner go on full tilt because he seemed to be the only Cane with any emotion-- even if it was frustartion.

We decided to give our tickets away after going to Fri's game and then to an afternoon movie - I wish Caniac369 and caneshockeychic could have seen a better game from them.

Yeah, Skinner's behavior was pretty disappointing. The penalty itself was stupid, Volchenkov didn't deserve one for his hit on Skinner, so the late retaliation hit was lame to begin with. You could clearly see him leave the box after the goal saying "....f*cking joke" and directly toward a ref. Not sure if he had a "you're a....". John/Tripp were agreement that the no-call on Volchenkov and the call on Skinner were both right. I'd feel a little differently if Skinner had gotten screwed by the refs or something...he didn't. Then they showed him laughing on the bench when they were assigning the 2nd penalty. At some point you should shut the eff up and don't dig the hole deeper.

I think Tripp FULLY expected Muller to award some ice time penalty to Skinner, but he didn't miss a shift. As was mentioned on twitter, Muller had a lot to say to ref Sutherland so I guess I wasn't surprised.

I agree, SHC, he could have said something post-game about letting the team down ... or something.

Ugh, forgot that Clarkson goal was a PPG.

Still, my point remains...the entire team stunk it up.
