Default Samsonov is Inked

The Canes first signing:
Quote:
RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has agreed to terms with right wing Sergei Samsonov (SAM-sawn-nahf) on a three-year contract. The deal will pay Samsonov $2.3 million in 2008-09, $2.5 million in 2009-10 and $2.8 million in 2010-11.

“We were very excited about Sergei’s play after he arrived in Carolina,” said Rutherford. “It was important to the success of our team going forward that we keep him here.”

I would have liked to see us get him for closer to $2 mill a year but this is a pretty good deal if he can keep up the production he had last season. I think we'll see good things out of the Brindy/Williams/Samsonov line next year.

Wow - That was quick! Guess JR wasn't kidding when he said that Sergei was going to be a priority.

Haven't studied in any great detail, but at first glance the numbers and length certainly seem fair on both sides.

WIN/WIN

Well, that seals it. I'm officially getting my K.Adams re-lettered as "THAMTHONOV."

great news. i was hoping for ~.5m less over the same contract length... but it's a good deal so long as he produces the way he has been.

Can totally live with this.

JR sure seemed ultra confident in that press conference- they must have had a handshake type agreement, cause this was fast. That, and we all know he was probably extremely grateful for the opportunity.

Very glad to hear it. So now, let me flip to the other side- this is done fast, however, we know we're top heavy on forwards- something's gotta shake out here right?

Good news indeed. Hope he can keep up the point production that he had the last couple months of this season.

this is just a hunch... but I'm wondering if Eaves will get shopped at the draft. Pick up a defenseman.

I thought the Eaves trade possibility was already brought up....can't remember if it was Forslund or DeCock.

It was DeCock when he was on with Gold and Ovies last week. He sees Eaves as the 10th forward and wholly unsuited for the 4th line.

Ooh- I'd hate for Eaves to go- especially since we werent afforded a healthy Eaves- and I just have this feelinig he's a Laviolette type player.

So basically I can't allow myself to fiddle and figure out who would be on the block so to speak. Oy.

Am I the only one who isn't thrilled about this deal? This is a LOT for a person who has shown the ability to tank at moment's notice.

I hope he does well here and we aren't looking back 3 years from now saying what were we thinking?

Edit: I really want to see what Eaves can do before we move him. I don't think he is a top 6 forward though.

I read over on the Sens board after the trade went down that in Murrary's press release he said that Eaves was the guy who got the deal done. He said something how he didn't want to trade Eaves but in order to make the deal he had to.

Hearing this I doubt Eaves gets shopped.

As for DeCock, he doesn't want to let the cup team go, so its easy for him to say Eaves. However, I think JR is ready to move on into another direction. I think his tradebait are Cole and Whitney. One or both I doubt will be a Cane next year.

Couldn't agree more ... he really reminds me of Justin. And his salary will be reasonable. Hate to say it (again), but Cole seems most likely. And with Vancouver getting a new GM, a ton of d-men in hand and looking to make a splash .... just sayin'

I'm happy. Like others have said, I think we'll dump some salary (Cole) to justify this contract.

I admit (over and over) that I don't keep up with the West, but I thought I heard discussion (in the post Nonis-canning) about how one of Vancouver played 0 games with their top 6 dmen the entire season. I realize that it may have been defensive depth that even kept them in the playoff hunt, but you wonder how much D they feel comfortable with keeping/letting go.

Oops, I've furthered the OT discussion.

Whitney has a NTC, no? Plus, he'll be tough to deal with two years remaining on his contract.

Who knows if this is the year we finally trade Cole, lol, but if we do it will be to help land a good Dman....don't think we'll be dumping much salary anywhere.

But I guess this makes it oh-so-unlikely that Stillman and JR have talks. Might be a bad day for Stillman all around, .

no doubt ... but that'd be like the Canes going into next season content having 10 top-nine guys, plus LaRose, plus Sutter ...

Bieksa, Miller, Krajiceck, Mitchell, Salo, Ohlund, Edler, Bourdon ... that's EIGHT legit NHLers. Something's gotta give.
